What is the point of intelligent design?
narcimund replied to AlexCrowley's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, isn't that the nature of science? One does the best one can, then later one does better with new discoveries and tools. Your example of a theory that's later supplanted by new fossil discoveries is hardly sufficient to discredit an entire approach. If that were the standard then every field of science would have been "disproven" thousands of times over. First Class Citizen Twice Over -
[replyIn the ancient world, if you wanted to invade another country, you didn't have to justify it with a lot of bullshit reasons. You just conquered another country because you could. Oh, the good old days. First Class Citizen Twice Over

The only person I've seen make that argument lately is markharju and he seems to be a very pro-gun person. edited to streamline the quoted bit. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Well, you're probably right about that, but it's hardly a unique complaint in the sciences. First Class Citizen Twice Over -

I believe the ID studies typically use the longer, scientifically accepted time scales. First Class Citizen Twice Over -
Thanks for that example. But to make sure you're not getting distracted, can you tell me where your original example was changed? Just to remind you, you said: Where in the Bible does THAT change come from? First Class Citizen Twice Over

To be more fair to ID, there IS more to it than that. The basic concept is that one can scientifically measure how quickly complexity accumulates through natural random chance, then go out into the world and measure the complexity of things as they really are. The one would show that they could not have occurred randomly in anything like the time frame available. So while the motivation seems to be to show that "GOD DID IT", the methods one uses are much more akin to science as it's commonly understood. And to be very generous, one could theoretically imagine a scientist who did this work without a theological motive but came to the theology through the work itself. First Class Citizen Twice Over -

NelKel, with all DUE respect, it's hard enough to figure out what you're saying when you keep it short. This mess is very hard though. I just can't parse it all. I really tried and I'm a smart person. There's a strong connection between clarity of writing and clarity of thought. I thought you'd like to know, just for future reference. A little more care in your writing might also help with your future job prospects. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Here's some completely rough numbers. These aren't researched. They're "common knowledge" things I read in newspapers. In 4 weeks in Multnomah County, Oregon, 3000 homo couples got married. One can assume that was an unusual surge. In a couple of years there have been around 5000 homo marriages in Massachussettes. And about the same throughout Canada which has been doing gay marriages for a couple of years, depending on which province you're looking at. Canada has about 30 million people. So in Canada that amounts to approximately three one-hundredths of a percent of the population is in a gay marriage. I would guess maybe 50% of people are in straight marriages? If my rough estimates are close, that means for every $100 spent on straight couple benefits in Canada, there was approximately $0.07 spent on gay couples. Of course that doesn't account for benefits for children which presumably are more common in straight families. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Let's see how far out of your way we're talking about. Lessee... What would be nice? 1) Push the Yes, gay marriage wouldn't hurt me and would help other people so I have no objection button instead of the No, fuck the gay people's happiness just out of spite button when you vote. 2) Refrain from being inserting nasty comments in conversations about gay people and gay marriage. 3) Oh wait -- there is no (3) Yeah, that's about it. Is that too much effort for your level of concern about other people who've done you no harm? First Class Citizen Twice Over

Every heard of fairness? compassion? kindness? Freedom? I wonder what percentage of people just instinctively vote "NO" whenever something comes up that doesn't affect them. If someone else enjoys the benefit, STOMP ON IT! First Class Citizen Twice Over

That's the definition of a closed mind. I'd be happy to change my mind even on this very personal matter if someone could show me actual significant harm that would come if I were allowed to marry. Anyone who isn't open to changing their mind is just preaching. First Class Citizen Twice Over

If you were open to understanding, everyone's analogies would have already shown you the fallacies in your arguments. But you're not arguing. You're stonewalling. You're deflecting. You're intentionally missing the point. No surprise there. It's what everyone's done on the anti-gay side of this debate, both within dropzone.com and in the larger world. It's always easy to find a nitpick in an analogy and say, "See? That analogy is flawed." It's easy and it's the only way out for someone who's desperate to maintain their untenable position. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I was quickly scrolling past your post looking for posts by people who actually respond to "reason, philosophy, and logic" when they ask for it. Somehow I spotted my nickname fly past. I'm not going to dismiss or ridicule your examples. I'd have to follow through and look at them and think about them to do that. By ignoring the responses you ask for, you've proven that your posts are not worth my time. Next! First Class Citizen Twice Over

Nobody is claiming the nabla spokesman gets to speak for the gay community. He's speaking to the distance that HIS group recognizes between themselves and a large, separate community that some would like to call the same group. It's like that mythical skydiving bank robber acknowledging that his skydiving hobby DOES NOT RELATE to his bank robbering. But you knew all this already, didn't you? First Class Citizen Twice Over

I believe what livendive is saying is that the specific set of pedophiles that comprise nambla happen to also be homosexual (and they also happen to be male.) I wouldn't be surprised to find that's true for the most part. All of us (except for Mark and also the rabid homophobes) seem to also agree that the fact that nambla members happen to be homosexual (and also happen to be male and eaters of bread and also whose bodies occupy space and have mass) is simply coincidental and of no consequence to this discussion any more.
