Put the cutter on the outside of the rig under the reserve cover on top of the top flap? As long as we are going to condone putting it under a top flap and the problem that creates, hell, just put it outside the top flap under the pin cover so you can see it. That's the point I'm making... it's such a rare situation that trying to negate it will simply make it more complicated. Putting the cutter on the top flap? Sure... going to have to put some sort of barrier on it to keep it from getting fouled up, extra protection for the cutter head/control wire, making it so you can actually have a pin go thru the closing loop mounted directly on top of the cutter... (not to mention the many more cutters that will be damaged by the use of positive leverage tools and temp pins that gouge the surface) IMO the Cypres cutter isn't the problem, and I don't think it needs to be changed at all. Shit happens, one in a million shot... I don't see anyone trying to change the ability of lightning to strike and kill someone. ETA: The lightning doesn't require a waiver either. How exactly would you install a closing loop into a container if it's already installed in the cutter? It's not as easy of a concept as you might think. That is not my experience. I did not get spanked, but very soft would not be my description. "Positive" would be closer to it. Its all in how you pack it. I could pack the softest opening canopies to possibly break lines... Controlling the slider is a big one, and quite a few people I see packing don't do it so well. What you do with the nose also has an effect. My Safire2 opens 'positively' if I just quarter the slider and throw it in the bag. If I split the nose and fold the 4 on each side in just a turn, it opens beautifully, soft and on heading. Injured on a night jump...Why?
theonlyski replied to blue24's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Actually, my night jump was a pretty nice landing... all things considered. Only light I could see was at the turn in point... couldn't see the trees vs the sky, just black. "Keep your feet and knees together, you'll be fine" seems to have payed off (atleast under a T-10 out of a C-130) "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message -
I see your point. Please hire me as an expert witness and I will fly (at your expense of course) to the location of the hearing and attest to the truth. I won't even ask for much, flight, lodging and a rental car... I'll cover the M&I. I'm feeling pretty invincible at this point. Want me to go kick hiss ass for you? Now no using your pool cue. That's cheating. I was always told if you're not cheating, you're not trying. Doesn't seem to work in relationships too well though. Fine, I won't come to the TDS DPH boogie I won't be driving the bus that weekend so you'll be safe. I'll be busy doing a ton of other stuff. Sadly my LSZ is smaller than my 31-15 so I don't get a warm fuzzy with putting it in the table. I have been putting off buying a table for it, but it looks like I will have to sooner or later. Does it have provisions for a knee bar to lift the presser foot? That's one thing I will be working on make happen when I do mount mine on a table... it's kind of sad to get used to it then not have it, and still push your knee over to try! I've never had any more issue closing a rig that had a cutter mounted properly than closing one without it. I don't care HOW shitty of a day/time I'm having if the rig is kicking my ass, I take a break, relax a few mins or leave it till the morning to finish closing. I don't know of ANY rigger that would intentionally do anything even close to just 'making it easy'. ETA: According to the incident thread, it looks like it was a Wings container, which has a bottom of the pack tray mounted cutter, not threading it thru the cutter would make no difference as far as closing goes (minus a possible having to adjust the closing loop 1/4" which is a SMALL possibility of having to do) [WARNING HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE BELOW, DON'T READ TOO MUCH INTO THIS!] I didn't... but it's a good story to tell the jury, since it seems you're interested in everyone from the rigger, the dz and even Airtec getting their wallets out and handing over some cash. I really wish the defense would hire just about any rigger with a good head on their shoulders, it would be a simple demonstration to show that it wasn't intentional for those reasons you listed. Your 'hypothetical example' is flawed, the design of the container and installation of the AAD cutter at the bottom of the pack tray on that container preclude your idea that it could've been someone just bypassing it to get the container shut. Realistically, once the freebag is in the container, you wouldn't notice a single difference between closing a Wings with and without an AAD. The harder parts (compressing the spring and closing the last two flaps with the spring trying to push out) are what gets ya.
