Which is it? Profit or Income? If it profit then which business expenses are you allowing as deductions to arrive at Net Profit? I thought you were in favor of getting rid of mortgage deductions, depreciation, etc? The rental costs would skyrocket if we remove the 'subsidy' of depreciation and mortgage expense. Those two expenses would have to be passed onto the renters. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Do you bring a phone when skydiving?
DiverMike replied to YvonneWiggers's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I put my phone and money in my pants pocket before I put on my jumpsuit. They don't take up much room and it is safer than leaving them in my gear bag or car. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
The traditional response of physicists has been to drag out Michael Faraday's legendary answer to Queen Isabella: When she asked what possible use could be found for the newly discovered phenomenon call electricity, Faraday reportedly replied, "Of what use is a newborn baby?" I'm still confused how this would be implemented. What about all the people who are renting property? Speaking as a landlord, most of my properties are revenue neutral because the rents I receive cover the outstanding loan on the properties. I benefit by deducting the loan costs (and depreciation) on my tax return. If I can't deduct those expenses, I would have to immediately sell all the rental property and nobody would buy it because they can't deduct rental expenses. The whole housing economy would collapse, as well as the banking economy since nobody would be borrowing money to purchase rental property. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

So you aren't allowing any business deductions? If I buy raw materials for .50, pay someone .30 in labor to manufacture something, and sell the finished good for $1.00 I pay the tax on the entire dollar? The only way to keep my profit margin up high enough would be to inflate the retail price significantly. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

+1 Unfortunately, when I post a job for a software developer I get anywhere from 300 - 500 responses. It may make me a bad person, but I don't usually contact 400 or so people to tell them they are not being considered. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Just to prove my ability to cut and paste: #1 A total of $3 million has been granted to researchers at the University of California at Irvine so that they can play video games such as World of Warcraft. The goal of this "video game research" is reportedly to study how "emerging forms of communication, including multiplayer computer games and online virtual worlds such as World of Warcraft and Second Life can help organizations collaborate and compete more effectively in the global marketplace." #2 The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave the University of New Hampshire $700,000 this year to study methane gas emissions from dairy cows. #3 $615,000 was given to the University of California at Santa Cruz to digitize photos, T-shirts and concert tickets belonging to the Grateful Dead. #4 A professor at Stanford University received $239,100 to study how Americans use the Internet to find love. So far one of the key findings of this "research" is that the Internet is a safer and more discreet way to find same-sex partners. #5 The National Science Foundation spent $216,000 to study whether or not politicians "gain or lose support by taking ambiguous positions." #6 The National Institutes of Health spent approximately $442,340 to study the behavior of male prostitutes in Vietnam. #7 Approximately $1 million of U.S. taxpayer money was used to create poetry for the Little Rock, New Orleans, Milwaukee and Chicago zoos. The goal of the "poetry" is to help raise awareness on environmental issues. #8 The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent $175 million during 2010 to maintain hundreds of buildings that it does not even use. This includes a pink, octagonal monkey house in the city of Dayton, Ohio. #9 $1.8 million of U.S. taxpayer dollars went for a "museum of neon signs" in Las Vegas, Nevada. #10 $35 million was reportedly paid out by Medicare to 118 "phantom" medical clinics that never even existed. Apparently these "phantom" medical clinics were established by a network of criminal gangs as a way to defraud the U.S. government. #11 The Conservation Commission of Monkton, Vermont got $150,000 from the federal government to construct a "critter crossing". Thanks to U.S. government money, the lives of "thousands" of migrating salamanders are now being saved. #12 In California, one park received $440,000 in federal funds to perform "green energy upgrades" on a building that has not been used for a decade. #13 $440,955 was spent this past year on an office for former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert that he rarely even visits. #14 One Tennessee library was given $5,000 in federal funds to host a series of video game parties. #15 The U.S. Census Bureau spent $2.5 million on a television commercial during the Super Bowl that was so poorly produced that virtually nobody understood what is was trying to say. #16 A professor at Dartmouth University received $137,530 to create a "recession-themed" video game entitled "Layoff". #17 The National Science Foundation gave the Minnesota Zoo over $600,000 so that they could develop an online video game called "Wolfquest". #18 A pizzeria in Iowa was given $60,000 to renovate the pizzeria's facade and give it a more "inviting feel". #19 The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave one enterprising group of farmers $30,000 to develop a tourist-friendly database of farms that host guests for overnight "haycations". This one sounds like something that Dwight Schrute would have dreamed up. #20 Almost unbelievably, the National Institutes of Health was given $800,000 in "stimulus funds" to study the impact of a "genital-washing program" on men in South Africa. Why should anyone rich or poor give more money to the government if the government is not correctly handling the money it is currently receiving? Fix that problem and quit enabling the broken process by giving it more funds. You aren't going to solve waste and corruption by adding money to it. I didn't actually remove the altimeter - just covered it up. Maybe it comes from pilot training, but covering up an instrument is much more certain than trying not to look at it. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I'm not a fan of making it a regular habit, just wondering if it is good training as part of a hop and pop, or it is a stupid risk that shouldn't be taken. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I just tried this and found it to be very fun and educational. I removed my audible, took off my wrist alti and told the people on the load my intent. One of the more experienced skydivers told me I would be better off keeping the wrist altimeter on and just putting duct tape over the section below 1000'. I followed that excellent advise so I could still see important altitudes for EP's. I did a Hop & Pop at 4k at pulled immediately. I had a good canopy and didn't look at the altimeter once. The intent was for me to see how accurate I could be in the pattern just using my eyes, but I found it to be my most relaxing skydive yet. I wasn't having the internal dialogue "How high am I, Have I checked recently . . . " I'm working on putting together the 10 landings within 2 meters for the 'C' license, so there is a yellow hula hoop in the intermediate landing area. I nailed it without an altimeter. I'm pretty sure my turns weren't exactly at 900,600, and 300, and I did have to 'S' turn onto final, but I was within 2 meters. I wouldn't jump without an altimeter on a load to full altitude, but truly enjoyed the Hop and Pop. Has anyone else done anything like this? It is a bad training idea? Senate Democrates add millionaire tax to jobs bill

This kind of annoys me. Those same teachers and firefighters have a much better pension plan than I do as a Sub S Corporation single shareholder. Why don't we get rid of their pension plans and make them fund their own 401K plan rather than make me pay more taxes? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
Yes there were a few hiccups along the way and lessons were learned. I actually learned to drive on a 914, owned several and have a Boxster the first year it was produced. I'm a sucker for a mid engine. I was happy to get a Porsche that wasn't powered by a Volkswagen engine. I've always enjoyed the lower end 'starter Porsches' For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

+1 on the not driving a boxster in a winter climate and +100 on how much more maintenance cost will be than you anticipate. Much of the maintenance you need done will have to be done at the Porsche Dealer. I would be willing to bet most Boxster owners have never even seen the engine (it is actually quite a process to get to it). I am middle aged with apparantly a smaller penis than I think I deserve, so I have a Porsche. I don't even insure it from November to April. It sits in the garage under a car cover with a battery charger on it. If you do drive it in the winter, get a hardtop. It cuts down on noise and keeps the car warmer. Since I never drive my Porsche in inclimate weather, I would be willing to sell mine. They go for about $1500.00 on Ebay. Make me an offer. In the other FARs when it refers to "Pilot in Command" it does so to differentiate between multiple pilots or a pilot and a student. The language implies that the other person is a "parachutist not in command", but still a parachutist or a student and not a passenger. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Way to bring down the thread with logic and accurate information. While we are being honest, should he indicate that as a student with 35 jumps he will probably wear out the canopy before he has enough experience to demo it at something like a stadium event?
