CAN YOU TELL ME WHY THIS HAPPENED
DiverMike replied to Amyr's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think what Remster is trying to point out is your misunderstanding of the basic function of a pilot chute in inexcusable for someone with 40 jumps. It isn't necessarily your fault - you may have had really crappy instructors, but someone, somewhere dropped the ball and should be considering bowling shoes. You are probably being hijacked before getting to Alit's webpage as this doesn't happen to anyone else. Your computer is infected with a virus. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

According to Yahoo Maps, it looks like you are an interstate or two away from the beach. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
Ruined my instructors 1000th jump

Thank goodness the FAA does not agree with your interpretation of what a TI is, or a second class medical would be required. From the FAA's point of view, there is not a passenger in a tandem, but a student receiving instruction. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I agree, and it appears you would agree that it is not "the sign of an out of control ego that a person would think themselves fit to judge acceptable that the law has prohibited". We just haven't agreed on high wide the grey area is. It isn't a black and white line. Or is it? By the way - the FAA considers it a black and white line. It is a felony to lie about smoking pot 20 years ago on a third class application. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
-
It is easy to be judgemental and black and white, but that isn't the way of the world. If you are a TI, and have ever smoked pot just once in your life, you must apply for a waiver for your third class medical certificate. Would you consider it a sign of an out of control ego if you smoked pot once in high school 20 years ago but did not disclose it on the FAA medical application? That is my exact setup(what can I say - I am cheap and a newbie), and to a wuffo the dolphin on the reserve pin cover may look cool enough to steal. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Photo of Near Tail Strike used in Ad?
DiverMike replied to Skwrl's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is a photo of me taken from a photographer sitting on the floor of a caravan. It makes it look like the tail is going to go through my head, but it is just the perspective. Feel free to use it and attach any horrible decapitation story to it you like. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
I can't say that you have made me feel welcome - so by your definition I must therefore be a DZ.COM HATER. Is there a patch I can get to sew onto my jumpsuit signifying DZ.COM HATER membership? I would say something about your marketing skills, but that would be a PA and apparantly I am more afraid of SkyMomma than you are. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Paragear '93-'94 Cypres 1 = $1225 Paragear '11-'12 Cypres 2 = $1425 Someone wanna run the Cypres 1 through the inflation calculator? RUnning it through an inflaction calculator comes up with $1,225.00 in 1993 dollars equalling $1,920.02. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

It isn't a BSR - just a recommendation. Big Difference For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

This is really bizarre. I have been involved with several high risk hobbies that have national organizations and I have never experienced such a vocal cry from the membership asking the certifying organization to limit their freedom. Usually the requests from membership are either 1. Leave us alone, or 2. Make this change so as an Instructor/Owner I can make more money. I have never been involved with an organization that responds to requests to make the activity safer with "meh - we'll get back to you someday". If I were king of USPA for a day, there would be a Wing Loading BSR. It might not have an affect on at least 70% of the serious injuries and fatalities, but it would have some affect. I have yet to hear anybody say Brian Germain's chart would be a bad idea to implement. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Hell - rules and enforcement don't always help as in this example texting while driving is illegal and enforced. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

are you referring to Section 2-1-E: 2. First-jump course [E] a. All first-jump non-method-specific training must be conducted by a USPA Instructor or a USPA Coach under the supervision of a USPA Instructor. b. All method-specific training must be conducted by a USPA Instructor rated in the method for which the student is being trained. Every instance of discussing Method Specific Training in the SIM referrs to teaching students and not licensed skydivers. Presumably, since USPA allows your the minute you become a licensed skydiver to jump a Sub 100 sq Ft Canopy when the winds are at 40 knots, they feel once you are licensed you are a big boy (or girl). Dropzone.com purchase (Caveat Emptor)
DiverMike replied to 43_echo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I do wonder how often people get ripped off. I don't think it is really that often. I have purchased basically everything I have on DZ.com from at least a half dozen sellers and everything has worked out well. For major purchases, I asked more questions and requested references from a DZO or S&TA at the seller's dropzone. I guess I have been lucky counting on the honesty of strangers. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
How many people working on their 'B' license in the last 3 years are on the fatality list? It seems there are significantly more highly experienced skydivers on small canopies getting on the list, most of whom have taken or taught canopy control courses. I applaud USPA's effort to promote safety by educating skydivers. It may be by focusing on canopy control courses significant injuries might go down, but it will be the teachers and not the students who benefit as they seem to be the ones getting injured and/or dying. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

We can agree to disagree then. According to the SIM, the coach rating is an instructional rating: Section 3-3 A. USPA instructional ratings USPA issues instructional ratings to each skydiver who qualifies by fulfilling all requirements for the rating being sought. These ratings attest that the holder has not only achieved skydiving skills but has also demonstrated the techniques needed to teach these skills to others. 1. Ratings are issued at the following levels (from lowest to highest): a. Coach b. Instructor c. Instructor Examiner I also see no ambiguity here - a coach rating is defined in the SIM to be the lowest level of an instructional rating. Coaches can do recurrency jumps. Yep: It is extremely rare, but pilots have gone to jail for lying on a 1st class medical certificate. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I wouldn't recommend lying on an FAA form, but if I had to do it over again I might have temporarily forgot about getting a sleep study done for sleep apnea. Once I mentioned it, I had to scurry down the FAA rabbit hole throwing money around to get a waiver. I can't recommend you don't fully disclose your medical information to the FAA, but I hope you can read between the lines. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

QuoteIt is a written policy at least on their websightQuote Thanks for posting that. SDAZ has every right to not allow me to play with their toys for almost any reason. I won't plan a trip there until or unless I get a different AAD or there is a policy change. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
-
In our litigious society, I'm not surprised the banning of Argus is not an official written policy. I don't think my estate should sue somebody if I bounce unless there is gross negligence. If I went to SDAZ and they made me take out my AAD, and I bounced, I would definitely consider them to be contributory to my death. I know there are a lot of "if's" in that statement, and nobody is making me jump at SDAZ, but if I planned a vacation there and wasn't told I could not jump my AAD until I got there, I would be under pressure to take it out. So is there an official written policy? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I have a gopro that I haven't put on my skydiving helmet yet until I have more experience. I did, however, put it on my ski helmet. Last time I was in Colorado, I video'd my wife, and since I was wearing a camera decided to go through trees for a 'cool shot'. I did something more dangerous than I would normally do, but wasn't focusing on it. I wiped out and by sheer luck did not get hurt. It is very difficult to forget you are wearing a camera. YMMV For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
