  1. I'm not sure the school district and/or principal were blameless in this. If you watch the video, it is clear they could have stopped her after she said, "For those of you who share the same belief I do, I ask you to please bow your head as I pray . . ." They gave their approval for an illegal act to take place. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaD8iQFaw7I For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  2. That possibility exists, but when I hear hoofbeats I think horses, not zebras. I think it is more likely a teenage boy is rebelling against the world than nut-job parents are throwing out a perfectly good teenager. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  3. I never understand why anybody even brings this up. The rules for winning are quite clear. It would be like someone complaining about how the winner of the World Series of Baseball is determined. A similiar argument to the Electoral College/Popular Vote debate would be as follows: Team A wins 3 games 5-2,7-4, 6-2 and Team B wins 4 games 2-1, 5-4, 6-3, 2-1. By the rules of the competition Team B wins the world series, but people who put any credence in the popular vote might argue that Team A should be the winner because the aggregate runs scored were Team A 29 and Team B 23. Change the rules for winning before the competition - don't complain about them after losing the competition. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  4. Sounds like there is more to the story than religious beliefs if his mom and dad think he is a jerk. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  5. it was invisible when it was a neatly formatted PDF file. As a text file, it is small enough to load, but harder to understand. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  6. Attached is a PDF file of the FAA Drug list indicating what is and isn't allowed for pilots. Oops - sorry it is over 300 KB as a PDF, so attached is a text file in pretty rough format, but it contains all of the allowed/disallowed medications. It is formatted as follows 1st line Drug Name 2nd Line Generic Name 3rd line What the drug treats 4th line what you have to do to get FAA ok to fly while on drug. - It may be blank if "NOT ALLOWED" appears in text. 7. I agree with everyone who says you should discuss this with your doctor. I teach SCUBA and when asked by someone interested in participating who is on SSRI's, I give them the following guidelines to discuss with their doctor: •Patients should only dive on the newer antidepressants. The older tricyclics reduce the fit threshold, can cause dysrythmias and are sedative. Modern antidepressants such as the SSRIs citalopram, fluoxetine and paroxetine have a low seizure rate of
  8. hey - why are you interrupting my attempt to make a boring thread even more boring? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  9. I am not a professional mathematician, and I'm pretty sure you outrank me on the brainiac scale as a professor of physics, but in the truest sense of the word I don't believe the number zero exists. Do you believe that numbers exist outside of a mathematical definition? They can certainly represent objects, but I don't know that I consider them to exist any more than happiness, the color blue, or hot exist. Which brings me back to my original question: "How can something that hasn't been defined yet and only exists as a definition exist before it is defined?" 1 million years ago water may have refracted light in the spectrum we now define as 'blue' (approx 440-490 nanometer wavelength), but 'blue' does not exist either prior to or outside of a definition. 10. How can something that hasn't been defined yet and only exists as a definition exist before it is defined? I'm not sure I would agree that quarternions were discovered as much as defined. It wasn't like he was crossing the Broom bridge in Dublin and stubbed his toe on one. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  11. You can perform the duties of a Tandem instrucutor while completely covering your eyes with a blindfold and the FAA doesn't care. Tandem Instruction is not considered an "aviation duty" so it does not fall under any of the requirements for corrected vision. If the FAA issues a SB that defines TI to be an aviation duty, you might have to have a pair of granny glasses in your jump suit to conform to: Farsighted (hyperopic) individuals or presbyopic individuals (those who require reading glasses as they age), are required to have corrective lenses AVAILABLE during aviation duties. 12. Have you tried Ebay? You can get a sub $100 aviator that has an audible pocket. http://cgi.ebay.com/Aviator-Skydiving-Helmet-2nd-Extra-Small-Black-/330455578129?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf0aff611 It comes in a really cool color - black. Fortunately for me, that matches my Dolphin container. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  13. If something only 'exists' as a mathematical definition, can't it be redefined? Until 1637 there were no imaginary numbers so there was no such thing as the square root of a negative number. Descartes 'redefined' the concept and the mathematical constant 'i' was born. I'm sure there is some long haired math professor out there somewhere trying to redefine 0 to allow it to be divided into smaller parts. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  14. I'm with Wendy. I am willing to bet that when you enumerate the one thing that doesn't change I and others will call "bullshit". At least you aren't posting about how you should wear a GoPro while Swooping a 1.5:1 canopy with 50 jumps. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  15. The liquid Icons have a new feature that incorporates a 'croaky' like string to hold the glasses. Less metal on the side of your head that your helmet will push into your temple or smash behind you ear. I forget what they call the option, but it is much more comfortable. 17. I agree that asking for specific medical advice is bad, but collecting data to review with your health care professional is good. I am not a doctor and did not sleep at a Holiday Inn express last night, but I have given data to people who want to participate in Scuba Diving who are on antidepressants. I strongly stressed this information should be reviewed with a health care professional: Divers who are taking antidepressants must satisfy the following criteria: •Patients should only dive on the newer antidepressants. The older tricyclics reduce the fit threshold, can cause dysrythmias and are sedative. Modern antidepressants such as the SSRIs citalopram, fluoxetine and paroxetine have a low seizure rate of
  18. I not sure there is a conspiracy. Some manufacturers are better with dealing with the public than others. Aviacom is an example of how not to handle bad publicity - throw a form letter on your website and close down all communication. Who the hell is the drunk marketing director for that company? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  19. +1 I don't understand why some people think the internet is not a good source for information. I can tell you right now, there are people on DZ.Com who have given advice and instruction that is far better than sitting at the bonfire at the DZ listening to the packer who always wanted to be a rigger. And besides, they are probably not half drunk when giving the advice. Having said that, this particular instance may fall in the category of needing to know the person better than an anonymous stranger on the internet. Is he taking happy pills because his dog just died or to stop the voices in his head screaming "Kill yourself and take a TI with you"? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  20. +1 I had prescription lenses put in the player frame. Good wraparound for wind protection and the lenses are large enough there is no distortion caused by the prescription. I added the insert to keep any wind from hitting my eyes. Most people don't, but I hate any wind in my eyes. You can also get the prescription ground into the insert. I guess that is useful if you wear contacts (I don't). The customer service is phenomenal. I can't say enough good things about the company's integrity and commitment to get things right. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

  22. I didn't mean all problems would go away, just the swooper hitting a non swooper. We will never be 'safe'. The close calls I have seen have been when someone throws a swoop at the end of a camera or AFF Jump. I suppose that isn't a fair assesment since that is the only time I've seen people swoop at my DZ when there is other traffic in the air. I've never seen a separate pass for swoopers. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  23. I've been lurking this thead for a while. Isn't it somtimes the case of vidiot's / AFFI's wanting to eat their cake and have it too? They participate in the paid jump, then want to add a swoop at the end. It has been said several times that all these problems would go away if swoopers had a separate load and or hop/pop pass. That way they would only injure each other, and that probably would not happen since they are following their own pattern. Is there a valid argument against swoopers doing whatever they want on their own load/pass? Is there any valid argument that swoopers should be allowed to mixed with AFF's, Tandems, FF,RW etc?
