Has anyone ever hit a bird?
wolfriverjoe replied to Tuna-Salad's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We've had Sandhill Cranes around the past 2 years. Sometimes they just stand around on the runways. I don't want to hit one of those with our 182. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
I think you can, but I'm not sure. The person to ask is your flight physician. It all depends on the 2nd class medical requirements. I know that the close vision reqs are a lot tighter for 2nd than 3rd. I'm going to need bifocals next year to keep my 2nd class. But I don't know for sure about the color reqs. Foreigner purchasing a car in the USA, Insurance....?
wolfriverjoe replied to rhys's topic in The Bonfire
One thing I know is that California has different emmissions (pollution equipment) laws than the rest of the country, so selling a car there will be tough if it is brought in from another state. How did you progress from wuffo to Skydiver?
wolfriverjoe replied to No_Phear's topic in The Bonfire
A group I am part of does a group static-line class once a year. I missed the first year, and got in on the second year. Then they changed the date so I couldn't be part of the group. So I said "to hell with it" and went the next weekend by myself (and had another from our bunch who couldn't make the previous weekend). Couldn't jump on Saturday due to winds, went back the next day, and had three others from the group that came back to jump again. I was hooked from the first jump, did the secon one that day and have been at it ever since. Only one other guy and I went on to get our licenses. We still do the big class once a year, and its my favorite day of the year. BTW, why is this in SC? I would think Bonfire or General would be more appropriate. Balderdash! Note: not entering the argument, just adding a negative declaration to the list. Edit to add: "We used to look up at the stars and wonder 'was they made or did they just happen?'" They are fun rifles to shoot. About the same as a 1903 Springfield, Enfield or 98 Mauser. Turn of the century, bolt action .30 caliber. Some kick, lots of noise. I work as a Range Officer at the local range, an I see them quite a bit. Some are quite accurate, some less so. Before you get one, find out about ammo availability/cost. If you can't get it locally, mail order is an option (Gun List or Shotgun News are good places to look). Most of the surplus stuff is corrosive. That isn't a big problem as long as you clean properly and right away. One of the regulars at my local range runs a patch soaked in Windex (ammonia removes the corrosive stuff) down the barrel immediately after shooting, and says he has no problems. Like others have said, check the bore carefully before buying. Mosin Nagants (and Enfields) are available around here at a big store called Fleet Farm. A friend of mine bought one, and insisted on examining every one the store had (about 15), before choosing the best one. Like someone else said, if you don't know all that much, take a friend who does. I'm always willing to go look at guns, especially if I'm going to get to shoot whatever gets bought. airport security and "swabbing" rigs
wolfriverjoe replied to keithbar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Actually, my understanding is that the swabbing detects nitrates. They are present in explosives, gunpowder (black, black substitute and smokeless), fertilizers and other things. Unless you store your rig in your loading room (if you load your own), washing your hands after loading or shooting should keep you ok. However, doing a PLF on a freshly fertilized field could cause a problem. Supposedly, unscented Tide is a good way to get the nitrates out. that trutv article is bad. I believe it started the myth of the flight path being shifted, due to incorrect reading of the Norjack book. oh btw: If anyone finds earlier references to theorized (mythologized?) flight path shifts, post a link. (edit) no my memory was good. the supposed H./Scott meeting is described here: http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/criminal_mind/scams/DB_Cooper/7.html But there is no such meeting in the Norjack book. The trutv article is from 2003? or 2004? If there are earlier references to a Scott/H./retirement meeting, please post. Yeah, the TruTV article is full of holes. It was a Huey chopper, not a T-33 that was the slow chase "plane". Ckret said "No hat". The description of the plane's behavior when Cooper jumped was way off. There's more, but those jumped out at me. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Like LisaH said, Dayquill only releves symptoms. What do you have? Colds and Flu are viruses, antibiotics only work on bacteria and will do more harm than good if you have a viral disease. The scientific studies haven't been conclusive, but I have had success dealing with colds using zinc and echinacea. If I start taking it at the first sign of symptoms, the cold only lasts 3-5 days. And the symptoms don't get too severe. Or my body is getting better at beating colds as I get older. Or it's purely a placebo effect. Since you say you plan on keeping it for a long time, I'd say try a LOT of different canopies to find the one you like best. This is an important enough decision that you want to take enough time on it. There's nothing wrong with the Pilot, but it may or may not be the best choice for you. The possibility of the main snagging on the cameras or mounts. You don't want the reserve coming out before you have a chance to get rid of the camera rig. Barrel rolls on big ways: Was - Fatality - Z-Hills, FL
wolfriverjoe replied to aresye's topic in Safety and Training
I'm new to this site. Not all that experienced of a skydiver. I knew this was a bad idea from other threads. I really like the apparent lack of flames, clear explanations, and unanimous opinion about the bad idea in the original post. New guys will keep coming up with the same apparently good, but dangerous and idiotic ideas over and over again. (This applies to everything, not just skydiving) So, what's the 45' rule?? Hi wolfriverjoe: nope. All I think is: Question. No answer. Oh well, no information that way. Move on to the next thought. A better question you might ask yourself: Why do you think my questions make sense or don't make sense, in probing '60s skydive history? How do you make a decision? Or do you not think about it really, and just like pointing out my weaknesses? I really don't get it. How do you jumpers make a decision about whether all possible Coopers in the jump community have been looked at? Is the answer that you just don't think about it? I understand the philosophy that Cooperites are bottom of the barrel waste-cases. But anyone reading this thread is part of the bottom feeding. So you can't point fingers. You're part of it if you're reading this. In reverse order: I'm not pointing fingers, just trying to point out some facts. Some have the bottom of the barrel philosophy. 377, Airtwardo, are oldtimers who don't. Guru312 didn't, but he has been absent from here for a while (Change of heart?). I've been interested in the case since I was a kid. The detailed information is fascinating to me. Ckret said all the DZs were checked out as part of the investigation. That doesn't mean all the jumpers were checked out. How likely is it that viable suspects were missed because one jumper didn't want to "snitch" on another?? I still believe Cooper was not an active experienced jumper. I try to decide whether or not to post by considering the positve vs negative results of posting and keeping my mouth (keyboard) shut. I've deleted a lot of crap after typing it out and previewing it. (Restraint of tounge and pen). And yes, there is stuff I probably should have not posted, oh well. I reply to you more than others because you post more than anyone else. You have a lot of great information and your searches are amazing, but I don't always agree with your conclusions. That doesn't make me right and you wrong, just a difference of opinion. Your questions about '60s skydive history only make sense if Cooper was a real skydiver. If he wasn't (as I think), they are an interesting tangent. Highly informative, but not relevant to the mystery. Last- You have used the lack of answers to your questions as indications that the skydiving community isn't as close-knit as we skydivers claim. You haven't and won't see a lot of the older guys posting on this thread. You seem to think that because none of the older jumpers answer when you ask "Did anybody jump at xxx time and place?" that there isn't an answer. Read the end of the first thread. There is a lot of animostiy towards Cooperites (or are we Coopernicans?). Many skydivers seem to resent the publicity given to this one jump wonder. Others resent the way this thread has attracted and been populated by whuffos. Quade was under a lot of heat to end this thread. I don't know if he still is or not.
