  1. Had it in 04. Got sick out on the road (Truck driver) home 4 days later on thurs, felt like crap, had next week off, spent it on the couch. Supposed to go back out following weekend, too sick, but thought I was starting to feel better, planned on going back out on Monday. Started coughing up blood on Sunday night. Saw doc on monday morning. He said I was probably 2 or 3 days from the hospital if I hadn't come in. 2 more weeks on couch. Mostly better (enough to go back out on the road). No long term effects. If it's not too serious, you should be more or less ok by Christmas. Make sure you take it easy, relapsing is very possible and really sucks. 2. I was thinking that if there were any seeds found, someone could grow it and use the history as a marketing gimmick. Make big $$$ possibly. The first thread on this: "Things to take with you......" quoted the news article as saying they had 100 seeds that they unsuccessfully tried to germiniate. 3. Really? 3 different ones? What are the differences? I have a 190 Triathalon (regular I think). I like it quite a lot. Packs nicely, opens nice (if I pack reasonably well), flies great, lands nice. I don't have much experience on different canopies to compare it to (except a 288 manta) but I can't see how you'd go wrong for that price, even as a temporary set up. 4. Perhaps short term risk yielding long term gain? Nature can be very generous with indiviual risk as long as the odds are favorable in the long run. Lots of Polynesians died crossing the Pacific, but enough made it to populate most of the habitable islands in the South Pacific. If there wasn't a "risk taking" gene, we'd probably still be up in the trees. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 5. Yep. and the difficulty of eliminating the threat increases exponentially as it approaches earth. 1 yr or more out a Delta-Vee of only inches per second (or less) would divert it out of Earth intersection. So why do I really believe that the human race will just ignore and/or shift resposibility for any real threat until it is far too late? Then a "crash" program that probably won't work (none of the techniques used in the movies would work, most would make the situations worse), along with total chaos on the ground, culminating with catastrophy for the human race. I can't quite decide if it would be a better thing for the earth and the (remainder of the) human race or not. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 6. 1. Unless you're of the EXTREMELY rowdy nature it is much harder to break bones or die having sex. That is unless you're 'Twardo's age and are just feeble. Or she didn't tell you she was married and her husband was a black belt "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 8. Fill out your profile! Chances are someone from a DZ close to you posts here and will tell you where to go. Unfortunately, a lot of DZs are now closing for the winter. (got what are probably my last 2 jumps of the season in last weekend
  9. Not really, the one in 2039 is not going to hit us, and when it comes back around in 2046 (same one) the chances are about 1:3000 that it'll hit. If I'm still around, I'll be 71. They don't know if it will hit in 2046 because it will come close enough in 2039 for the earth's and moon's gravitational force to change the orbit, and they won't know until after it goes by whether or not it will be a danger the next time around. The UN is a buch of useless idiot politicians. (yes, I know, take it to SC) who can't do anything effective. The only way a space program would stop the asteroid is if the US and Chinese and Japanese worked together without UN interference. 10. Yeah, I try to learn something from everybody here. Some teach me what to do.
  11. Like skyjumpenfool said, if the sensors "see" the impact the right way, they go off. If not, not. Speed, angle of impact, ect, don't automatically make/prevent activation. You can also accidentaly activate the airbag while working on the electrical system if you short the wrong circuit, or if you hit the sensor right. Odd fact: the passenger side airbag in a Porsche 928 is about $5k to replace because it takes out most of the dash when it activates. The airbag system has a self-diagnostic program in it. When you first start the car, the "airbag" light on the dash flashes. If it goes out, the system checks ok. It is supposed to be comprehensive enough that it will work if it checks ok (bad sensors, broken wires, bad inflation modules, ect are all supposed to fail the self check) "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 13. Thanks from all the truck(lorry)drivers. There are good drivers in the "fourwheelers" and we do appreciate it. FWIW, blinking the lights means "Thanks". "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  14. I drive truck, and in major cities, big trucks are barred from the exreme left lane. So you get granpa McSlowpoke in the middle lane (as far left as I can go) going 5mph below the limit. If I try to pass him on the right (legal, but frowned upon) I risk getting trapped by ramp traffic, if I pass on the left I risk a ticket. And there are signs that say "slower traffic keep right". Also, my truck is governed. It will not go any faster than 65 unless I'm going downhill. I come up on someone going a little slower than me, swing out to pass, get almost all the way past, then they speed up and either stay right next to my trailer wheels for 15 miles, or very slowly repass me, making all the cars in the left lane behind me all pissed off. And if they repass me, after I finally get back in the right lane, they slow back down and we repeat the whole process. The worst part about it is how easy it would be to squash them like the verminous bug that thay are. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 16. I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not. Until the mods move it, it'll do. The fear of heights isn't all that big a deal. I'm afraid of heights (you'd laugh your ass off watching me get on and off a roof from a ladder). I can't really explain it other than to say it's not height it's altitude. I'm a pilot too, and that doesn't bother me either. Don't worry about the rollercoaster thing. There is no "stomach drop" going out of a plane. You are already moving 80-90 mph going out the door and it takes 5 sec or so to get to terminal -120 or so. The only real comparison for me is that the plane ride is like going up the first hill. It seems to take forever, with the tension building the whole time Can you do it? Only you can answer that question. The real question is how bad you want to. A tandem doesn't require any skill or all that much effort on your part, so it would probably be a good way to start. My best suggestion would be to go to the DZ closest to you, hang out for a while, watch and ask questions. I will say it's like nothing else, it is the coolest thing in the whole world, and be careful what you wish for. Because once you jump, you may well not be able to think of anything else for a while. At which point, you are as screwed as the rest of us "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  17. I'd go by Ckret's version of the note myself, keep in mind that Cooper didn't let Tina keep it, he took it back. Any "testimony" on the note is going to come from the interview with Tina after the fact. How well would she have remembered details like that under those circumstances? I'm a little different, I've trained a bit to study for important details under stressful situations, but I think Tina would have been mostly thinking about how to keep Cooper from setting off the bomb. 18. Fill out your profile. The more info you give, the better you get. That said, keep your wingloading 1:1 or bigger. I go 155 stepping into the shower, and with all my gear, 190. My 190 Triathalon is still fun after 150 jumps on it. I can wingover and pendulum out almost horizontal. I'm just starting carving turn approaches. I've jumped a 170 Sabre2 a few times, and it's fun, but I've still got some more to learn on my Tri before I downsize. Check out BillVon's downsize checklist in the safety area. If you can get all that done (not just doing it, but being able to do it reasonably well) in 50 or so jumps, I'd be surprised. Also, selling a 190/210/215 isn't all that hard. There's lots of newer jumpers looking for them. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  19. Massive thermals? Visibility? Fire? Probably the same reason that these building escape systems won't work too well when the building is actually on fire. Plus, you can fit 4 passengers in a Jet Ranger, if they aren't too big, and there isn't a full load of fuel. Maybe 7 or 8 in an Augusta. The only ones that can hold a lot are the military. How many trips would it take to evauate the building, and how ugly would it get on the roof with the people left behind?? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 20. See if you can get your hands on some junk pallets. They have nails in them, so be careful cutting them up with a power saw, but they are kiln dried wood. Hardwood or softwood, they burn really hot, and pretty fast. You'll go through a lot of wood, but won't have to wait for it to finish burning. Depending on where you are, a lot of small/medium factories just throw them out. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 22. Oops! I should check profiles more often before making smart ass responses Seriously, I've seen quite a few girls jump for the first time (static line), and none had any problem pulling the toggles. 23. If you can do one pull-up, you probably have enough strength. I'm not a TI, but I know they have a lot of toggle pressure. Standard student canopies don't take anywhere near that much. Look at some of the girls that are jumping
  24. I gotta say go for a Pro-Tec. #1-Cheap- if you biff it or lose it or something, you won't be out that much. #2-Tough- I've had some good PLFs on mine, put some good scratches on it, scuffed the stickers up a bit, but no damage. #3-Good protection- As others have said, it's probably got the best impact cushioning available. When I was new(er) I had some rough landings/PLFs. I don't think I would have been badly hurt with a "regular" helmet or even no helmet, but it saved a nasty headache once or twice. No, it isn't the coolest thing in the world, but trust me, the up-jumpers will have lots better things to laugh at you for than your helmet. 25. Got 2 jumps yesterday. Kinda chilly, but I never notice it until under canopy anyway. It is nice this time of year. Three jumpers, had the DZ all to ourselves. Last weekend of deer season around here, still lots of orange in the woods. Not a good time for an off field landing. Might have been the last time for the season. Clouds and snow today.
