  1. I heard this on the radio a while back: Family discounts into many tourist attractions, including federally funded national parks. Even if both adults are legal guardians of the kids, a same-sex couple has to pay individual admissions for each person. It adds up fast. Kind of trivial, but it shows how pervasive the discrimination is. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 2. Water holds a lot of heat. It would boil a lot of the liquid nitrogen (or whatever-liquid nitrogens just the cheapest) away. Then you'd just have an ice balloon. A lot easier to put it in the freezer, but it'd take a lot longer. I've used liquid nitrogen to make instant ice cream before. Really cool process, and great ice cream. 3. Don't worry about it. Go jump. #1 It is the most amazing thing in the world. #2 Your "regular" friends will have no interest in it, and you will soon have to learn that they don't want to hear all about it in minute detail. Good luck keeping your mouth shut though. #3 It really isn't something to do alone, you don't learn anywhere near as much on solo jumps as you do with others in the air with you. BUT- the people in this sport are some of the coolest I have ever met. You can walk up to just about anybody (including some of the real experts) and ask "how do I...?" "can you teach me...?" "can you help me with...?" and get answers/help. All you have to do is really jump (not just talk/post about it) and reach out just a little bit. You will be surrounded by friends fairly soon. 4. There's an old pilot saying - "The three most useless things are Altitude above you, Runway behind you and 10 seconds ago" Are these the most safe practices? No. Are they unsafe? Based on the plane being off the ground in half the available runway, and clearing the obstacles with plenty of room; I can't say they are unsafe. The DZO has a lot invested in that plane. The pilot is as intersted in safety as the rest of the people on the load. The fuel savings by not taxiing are fairly significant. I don't see it as a bad tradeoff, given the description you gave. Edit to add: nbblood said that sometimes they do takeoff into the wind. That tells me they are evaluating the situation, and not going downwind when it isn't safe to do so. 5. Because alien species without natural predators can wreak major havoc on the local ecosystem. Google "emerald ash borer" for an example. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  6. I don't think we can start threads in the Scam forum. Fill out the "scam report" in the classifieds and the powers that be will check it out and post if the situation warrants. 7. Indeed! WORD! 2001 Boxster S, first track day coming up April 11 -12 WOOHOO No shit WOOHOO. Got my 944 out this afternoon! Cranked it over 2 revolutions and it fired right up.
  8. I'm sitting at the company terminal in Gary IN. I waited all afternoon for another driver to show up, and when he got here, the trailer needed to be fixed So now I have to wait for the shop to fix the trailer It's now getting dark, but for Gary - that's an improvement. So I had enough time to answer a lot of questions. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  9. You are welcome. The only way you get answers is to ask. And the only dumb question is the one you don't ask (or the one that has been answered dozens of times) FWIW- a lot of DZs require the students to have a hard copy of the SIM. 10. An lot of your questions are answered in the Skydiver's Information Manual (SIM). You can buy a hard copy, or just download it Here 1&2 - the test isn't until you get your license. The questions are based on the info in the SIM. On your first jump, your instructors won't let you jump until they are confident you have learned what you need to know. 3&4 All jumps count. The 25 is a minimum. You also need to demonstrate certain skills. They are on the card that comes with the SIM. 5,6&7 Toggles and brakes are the same thing. There is a keeper ring, but you want to keep your hands in them all the time. The canopy is packed with the toggles pulled down partway and locked (stowed) in place. This keeps the canopy going slower at opening (among other things). You pull them down and let them all the way up to unstow them. 8&9 Most DZs charge for full altitude. 14k is max without oxygen. High alt jumps require advanced locenses, its in the SIM. 10,11&12 Deployment is dependent on design. On most sport gear you pull the pilot chute from the Bottm Of Container (BOC). The only way to release the main is to pull the cutaway handle. Student gear usually has a single cutaway and reserve ripcord. Sport gear has seperate cutaway and reserve ripcord All canopies have a pilot chute. 13,14&15 You should start learning how to pack your main right away. You will probably start learning Pro-pack. don't worry about any other way for a while. You don't need a license to pack your own main. Packing reserves and for other people requires a Rigger license (the only FAA license in parachuting other than the pilot). 16 Until it wears out or is damaged. 17&18 The reserve is acually above the main in the container (baqckpack). It is completely seperate, and you don't have to open the main to deply the reserve. Modern reserves are square and steerable just like mains. There are some technical differences, but as far as you care, they are the same. 19 AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE!! There are currency requirements (in the SIM), but this sport is quite addictive. Hope this helps. You ask a lot of questions. Your instructors are going to love you. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 11. That's two separate considerations. First, is the faster driver within the law due to their speed. Second, is a slower driver within the law if they fail to move over to allow faster traffic to pass. From the info provided in the above link, it would appear that in such a situation, neither driver would be operating within the law. First: No. (read the example). Second: That's the question I'm asking. Both are above the speed limit, but the 'slower driver' is going with the normal flow of traffic. btw, this is CA law I'm questioning. ltdiver Well... In Chicago, they have signs that say "Slower traffic keep right". They have very similar signs (same size, color, size of lettering) that say "Trucks use 2 Right Lanes". I've never seen anyone pulled over for blocking the 2nd (left for trucks) lane, but I have seen trucks pulled over for being too far left. 12. I use a Tax preparer. Not a CPA or accountant ect. About $90, plus 5-10 for each "extra" Itemizing, Sched D, ect are "extras" "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

  14. I'm not familar with how the federal rules work, but for state laws/crimes the statute of limitations runs for 7 years (for felonies). The "clock" can be stopped by filing an indictment in court (as was done in the Cooper case) or by proof that the criminal was out of state - tax records, prison records, ect. I searched around and can't find it, but IIRC, the money was pre-assembled at the bank specifically for ransom purposes (it was part of the cash reserves the bank had to keep anyway). The serial numbers had been recorded, but I don't remember that the bills were photocopied or photographed. The cash was then wrapped in rubber bands in irregular sized bundles to make it look as if it was done in a hurry. Again, searched and can't find - the US Treasury does not record the SNs of old worn cash it destroys. It is quite possible for the Cooper cash to have been used, worn out, and subsequently destroyed here in the US without ever being detected. 15. 4 watts is still max legal for CB. Linear amps are still illegal, but common as all hell. And I was only kidding calling myself a "fucking trucker", I just hate the idiots out there on the radio as bad as Cspencefly. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 16. For a non-life-threatening injury, with EMS on the way, I can see how keeping any "strangers" away can be a good policy. Some DZs have staff/regulars who are qualified, but if they didn't know you or your qualifications, I can see them keeping you away from the situation. This isn't a knock on you, but there are folks out there who just want a close look and/or don't know as much as they think. You know better than I how much harm those people can cause, and I'm guessing the DZO knows it too. He's just covering his ass by not letting anyone near the injured party. I wasn't there, don't jump there. This is just my $.02 "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  17. Yep, the rest of the world invested their money and are now broke and unhappy. I think I got a better return on my investment in jump ticket. Still broke, but a lot happier "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  18. None of that really matters. I can't stand to listen to the fucking truckers for more then 1min37sec. I am a "fucking trucker" and I can't stand listening to the CB for more than 1min. Unless the weather is bad, or I'm talking with a company driver I'm travelling with the thing is off. It is so full of garbage. It's worse than SC. Rafflers, save your money or get an amateur radio. And be careful with the police scanner in the car. It's illegal in most places. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 19. Sounds like standard sleep paralysis to me. I get it every so often. The problem I have with it is that I can't tell the difference between what is real and what I'm dreaming. Waking myself up to get out of it is a bitch too. Edit to add: This is what they called an "old Hag" spirit back in the "old days". They thought you had a spirit sitting on your chest holding you down. And no, you're not crazy... unless you jump out of perfectly good airplanes or something like that "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 20. How did you think a discussion that was inevitably going to involve religion was not going to get moved? Paul, I had no intention of talking about religion. Regardless of your intention, people already have. People as a whole will not be able to resist the urge in talking about "the afterlife" when you talk about death. I see no such thing. Lighten up, dude. What, are you afraid to go to SC? Yes and no for the original question. I find the whole idea of an afterlife difficult to grasp.(and that's a whole different thread) I enjoy life too much to be willing for it to end. 21. Hmmm, isn't that a bit like saying that once an automobile has been inspected and sold, it's always going to be safe year after year of manufacturing even if they change the metallurgy of the parts? What other product would that be an acceptable policy for? No, it's more like requiring complete crash testing of each different option combination/trim level/color on each car. And requiring the manufacturer to pay for all of it. Yes, the stainless steel is different, as is the effects of a plating or coating the steel. But they aren't different enough to really matter. They have been making these guns this way for years. If you look at the rules for getting on the approved list, it's pretty obvious that it is just an attempt to prevent manufacturers from placing the product on the market. 22. I use a strap on my glasses even though they are under the goggles. I also keep a spare pair in my gearbag so I can drive home if they get lost/broken. You don't really need much muscle to jump. I think wingsuiting takes some arm strength, but I don't do it so I don't know for sure. You might want to bulk up a bit. You sound as skinny as me, and I fall like a feather pillow. I wear weights or have the other jumpers wear big suits to match fall rates. Things that build your trunk/core muscles would be good. Situps, pushups, squat-thrusts (good old bends-and-motherf@$%ers) - basic stuff. Working on your grip strength (squeezing a ball) helps with packing too. 24. Thanks Tom, I look forward to reading it. Let us know where and when at the appropriate time please. (Yes, I know you probably would have). 377 - Some personality disorders increase the ability to manipulate others. Pychopaths/Sociopaths are a good example. Ted Bundy was known to be very charming, Charles Manson was also very good at it. Snowmman - I know we won't find the exact models. I was mainly posting the link for those who want to see the hardware. I just got my textbooks and was a little surprised to see how much detail is in the Poynter texts. Bruce - Given how much off the wall crap has been posted here, suggestions of personality disorders are well within reason. Can you make any good guesses as to what specific disorders and why you think so? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 25. No, DC law and the California List are both being way too picky on what constitutes a "different" gun. We already had this discussion Here. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
