Well, on one side, Ray Nagin of New Orleans had his cops go around and confiscate all the guns they could after Hurricane Katrina. I don't recall any organized, violent resistance to that. On the other side, there have been polls (no, I don't have any links) that a majority of cops and soldiers wouldn't follow orders to do something like this. Personally, I don't see it happening on a nationwide scale. But I could be wrong. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I go both ways on this one. Why didn't the cop notice the sign on the gate, and realize that there were dogs in the yard. Most dogs will protect their territory. Why didn't the cop retreat (may not have been an option)? Did the cop have any training in dealing with dogs? (I'm serious about this - defense against dogs isn't hard, but is a very different technique) There are differences between "warning" behavior and "aggressive/vicious" behavior. BUT... Three dogs being aggressive is a very bad situation. I've had to deal with 2 at once, and it was bad. They are usually smart enough to split their attack, making it difficult to defend. Why were the dogs running loose in the yard (fenced or not) unsupervised. What if it had been a little kid collecting money for Hati relief? (hint: the kid would have run, displaying very clear prey behavior) "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." The party I was at agreed that the Doritos commercials (overall) "won". Bud came in second. The one with the calf and colt as friends and later as grownups was the best Bud ad. The early ad with the Killer Whale in the back of the Avalache, ending with the truck doing a 180 to toss the whale into the water with the line "that was the best bachelor party ever" - WHO WAS IT FOR??? There's one of those each year. Great commercial, but nobody remembers who it was for. Last - Simpsons Coke ad was the worst. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Perhaps because you continue to hang out with him, he thinks you are just playing hard to get. Some guys don't understand "No" until it is a "No, I don't want to be with you - AT ALL". That's the "Orange Mocha Frappachino" from Zoolander, isn't it? The "Gas Pump Fight" is right after IIRC. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

There is a dropzone locator feature (its up near the top of the page). On the home page, there is a "Learn to Skydive" link. Both of those have a wealth of info. One of the best suggestions on the "Learn" page is to go visit the DZ before your jump and ask to sit in on a class. The reputable places won't have a problem with this (space permitting). You can learn a lot about a place by watching how they treat the students. Are they really treated as students, or just passengers? Are the instructors rushing to make the next load, or do they take the time to go over the jump before and after? DO NOT just google skydive and pick the first link that pops up. There is a scam out there (Skyride) that usually is at or near the top. If the person answering the phone asks you where you are before they say where they are, hang up. Like Spence said, tell us where you are and you will get a bunch of us telling you where to go "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Thanks to all who have made comments on this thread. Especially to Quade. I went with a friend and her younger son (pre-teen). He hadn't wanted to see it in 3D because he was a little intimidated by the previews. Knowing that the 3D wasn't going to "throw stuff off the screen" and following the advice given about sitting a bit further back, he was willing to give it a shot, and we all had a wonderful time. The 3D is amazing. The only parts that really "jump off the screen" are the raised hands in the crowd scenes and the "floaty tree seed" thingys. The rest of it (as has been said) is far less obtrusive, and mostly makes the environment seem more "there". The plot is totally predictable, the dialogue is cliched and the characters both. The corporate head, the colonel, the soldiers (the door gunner screaming "Get Some" is straight out of Full Metal Jacket). Calling the stolen "helicopter" "Rouge One" is from "Star Wars - Empire Strikes Back". You knew that Jake was going to ride the Tourek the minute you heard that her grandfather had done so. And on and on. And none of that mattered. The experience overrode the shortcomings. By a huge margin. I may well go see it again, mainly to look for stuff I missed. I haven't seen a movie twice in the theatre in a very long time. I highly doubt I will ever watch it in 2D or on a small screen. That would take enough away that the shortcomings would be too much. Tax cheats beware: IRS buying sawed-off shotguns
wolfriverjoe replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
(d) For the purposes of Sections 12025 and 12031, the term "firearm" also shall include any rocket, rocket propelled projectile launcher, or similar device containing any explosive or incendiary material whether or not the device is designed for emergency or distress signaling purposes. Legalese is a pain. So is a rocket propelled potato a firearm, but one launched by a charge of hairspray from a PVC pipe not?? Or would the rocket propelled potato have to have a charge in it to qualify?? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." AAD question + how long does a repack and AAD install take?
wolfriverjoe replied to almeister112's topic in Gear and Rigging
Another is losing altlitude awareness and suddenly realizing you are at 1200ft (or maybe a little lower). Your AAD hasn't fired yet, but it more than likely will during deployment if you deploy your main. The decision tree would dictate pulling the reserve under that situation. Why is it so hard to get over someone?
wolfriverjoe replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in The Bonfire
Not to disparage your family, but an outsider would probably be better. Most shrinks I know (admittedly not a lot) wouldn't counsel anyone in their own circle of family or friends. A good shrink requires a certain level of detachment to be of any real help. Good luck to you. This sort of thing really sucks. Edit to add: Hungarianchick and I are on the same wavelength on this. Why is it so hard to get over someone?
wolfriverjoe replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in The Bonfire
This isn't love anymore. Not without the person being involved. It's more of an obsession. It's also not reality. Is there any chance of actually being able to see this person? The reality of who she is may (or may not) jolt you out of the obsession. What caused the breakup? Her, you or uncontrollable circumstances? It's a lot harder to get over this kind of thing if you both wanted to be together, but stuff beyond your control forced you apart. Woulda, coulda, shoulda - that shit will tear you apart. I agree with Hungarianchick about getting some real. professional help. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Hello from Chicago IL USA
wolfriverjoe replied to FlyingSquirrel7's topic in Introductions and Greets
Don't worry about buying gear yet. The student gear has some special features you don't really need on sport gear. You will also start on a huge student canopy and downsize through several sizes as you progress as a student. The gear you will want as a new "A" license is not appropriate for a first jump student (and you will probably move on from your first rig in a fairly short time too). As a student the most you will want is your own helmet, goggles and altimiter (maybe jumpsuit too, but if you look in Gear and Rigging, you will see a bunch of recent threads arguing about a first suit). And be nice about the "monkeys". A lot of them could be your AFP instructors too. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." First AFF failed really bad! need imput!
wolfriverjoe replied to elgue's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is why a lot of places reccommend a tandem before doing AFF. It isn't just to make money, it's to get the "Holy Fuck I Just Jumped Out Of An Airplane And Am Now Plummeting Toward The Ground" thing out of the way under more controlled circumstances. I have seen tandem students (one jump wonders) complain that the freefall only lasted a few seconds and they didn't see the video guy at all - and then watch in wonder at the video as they look around, wave at the camera and even dock on the camera flyer. All the time saying "I don't remember any of this". Sometimes they remember later, sometimes not. Next time should be better, and it will improve more as you go on. Your instructors should have covered this. The FJC at my DZ includes a (brief) discussion of sensory overload and that it's not unusual. And that is what customer service really means. Screwups happen. As long as there is a human in the mix, there will be mistakes. Period. Far too many companies would be more than happy to blame the "supplier" or the "wholesaler" and claim "it wasn't our fault." Owning up to the mistake, and doing whatever it takes to make it right is why you get so many of the "KK Rocks" threads started. Not because you are perfect, but because you care about getting it right in the end, no matter what, no matter how. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Yeah, I was thinking about that video when this thread started. We always called the older cars "tanks" thinking that they were big and tough, but the newer "soup cans" are actually safer for the passengers. Lodi Facing Million Dollar Lawsuit

Correct me if I'm wrong - I wasn't there and don't have any first hand knowledge. But didn't the injured jumper have a couple near-misses? Wasn't he told not to exit that way? Where are the pigeons?? And I hope you have a more stable mount on your jump helmet. The puppy cam couldn't decide if it was a top mount or a side mount "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Maybe, maybe not. I don't keep stats. I just have to not get hit by them (which can be harder than it sounds). More often than not, a car being driven badly is being driven by an idiot on a phone (talking or texting). The idiots who need to go faster than everyone else (tailgating and lane jumping) are more annoying. And the "lost ones" are often the scariest. Someone who doesn't realize they are at their exit until the last second and then swerve across 3 lanes of traffic with no warning (or signal). Interesting story to add to the discussion CNN.com text story. PURELY A GUESS - Accidents don't go down because the ones who obey the law are the careful and concientous ones who wouldn't get in an accident anyway, and the ones who cause the accidents are the ones who don't obey the law because they have "mad skilz" "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I would guess he means GM Corp. Those lake effect snow squalls can be truly evil. As the OP's wife found out, slowing down can be as hazardous as maintaining speed. Keep going, you hit someone who slowed. Slow down, you get rearended by someone who didn't slow. Glad she's ok. The crush zone engineering makes a lot of nasty accidents a lot more survivable, well worth the cost/hassle of making repairs from lesser accidents a nightmare. I heard last week that they are cleaning out all the stuff associated with the space shuttle. Something like 3 million items (from hardware and fasteners to the actual orbiters). A lot of the "cool" stuff is going to museums and schools (which is where it belongs). I think they should "E-bay" the rest. How much would a space geek pay for a heat shield tile? Or even a couple nuts and bolts. I'd pay a premium (say $10-$15 per bolt) to have a couple "geunine space shuttle fasteners" on my motorcycle. and by the way the law works, other things that might be distracting while driving, that are not explicitly defined as illegal, are legal. Such as? Name something that is as common as a cell phone in a vehicle and as distracting as texting on a cell phone while driving. Eating. Applying makeup. Reading(not completely sure on that one). Disciplining children. Messing with the stereo or GPS. Arguing with a spouse. Petting a dog (dog being on driver's lap). All these are things I see on a regular basis, often with the driver paying little attention to the road or the traffic around them.
