The mileage listed by the mfg is "for comparison purposes only" and "Your Mileage May Vary". They all have to use the same technique to get the MPG so I believe the relative numbers are valid. Hard lauches off stop signs and red lights, running 70 or faster on the freeway, speeding up and slowing down in traffic, all that stuff lowers the actual MPG. My actual MPG? Usually around 6.5 or so. Lately I've been pulling heavy loads so it's dropped closer to 6 But that's in a semi My 4-cylinder Porsche 944 gets 27 overall, quite consistently. But I drive it gently, and keep it below 70 on the highway (WI cops are pretty strict, and most cops keep a close eye on sports cars). My old Toyota MR2 usually got 33-35, but it was a lot lighter than stock due to extensive rust "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Nah, we just need to publicize how little fuel we usually have on board. "Take this plane to Cuba!!" "Dude, we only have enough fuel to get to Milwaukee." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

I'm a firm believer in "The only stupid question is the one you don't ask". This is a question best answered by your instructor, in person, during the FJC. But, since you won't be doing that for a while, here goes. When approaching to land, you pull down on both toggles. This changes the airfoil shape of your canopy, increasing both lift and drag. Doing this converts downward speed into lift. It slows both the descent and forward speed. Timing this so that you level off and almost stop just at the ground is the tricky part. Too soon and you will stall the canopy while still too high for a good landing. Too late and you hit hard. In short, you use your toggles to slow your descent to keep from hitting the ground too hard. And bonus points for spelling it "Flare", not "flair". Me too. I take certain risks, and live my life the way I choose. Some may disagree with my choices, but I have thought long and hard about them and have made my peace with my decisions and the consequences that may result. Normal however, is a completely different question. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

They are the same thoughtless, selfish, lazy, inconsiderate (and on and on and on) one that don't pick it up at other times, it's just that without the grass to hide it, you can see it easier. Are there rules at your complex? Local laws? (my city has an ordinance requiring pick up) Video cameras work wonders. As satisfying as smearing it on their door (put it in a brown paper bag, and soak the bag in water right before you throw it as hard as you can at their door), it is still vandalism or criminal mischief. FWIW, I just got back from a lap around the block with my little dog. The little kid next door asked what I had in the bag. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." About as accurate as saying a lot of the pro-gun folk suffer from medomalacuphobia and use their guns to compensate. Perhaps, but I don't see it that often. I get some of those from time to time at the local range (I am one of the range officers). They are usually the ones who have to have the biggest gun, or feel the need to burn through a full magazine as fast a possible (without hitting a damned thing). They can be some of the scariest ones too, because they think they know everything, yet can't keep their weapon pointed in a safe direction. And don't know or won't follow the rules. Most guys just want to have a good time, and work on their skills. Many of the antis seem to leave logic behind. My personal favorite is Michael Bloomberg banning Duacoat, a protective finish for guns. Someone is going to spend that kind of money to make a gun look like a toy? Of course, Duracoat got a lot of free publicity out of it. I'm probably going to get my AR coated in a camo pattern next year (trading an airbrush to the guy who will use it to coat the gun). Because if one person uses a gun for nefarious purposes, then why should all those people be able to have fun??? Because "Guns are Bad" and nobody should have fun with them?? Because a lot of the anti-gun folk are "hoplophobes" (an unreasonable fear of weapons) and refuse to accept that anyone should have a gun. Click fixed. Cute rifle, but how long do the batteries last. Especially at sub-freezing temps. Kinda heavy, and I think the (estimated) $25000 per rifle is gonna be hard to get around. I had a bit of a debate with a guy down at my local range. His AR has red dot sights, flashlight, bipod, all the bells and whisltes. Mine has nothing. No red dot, just iron sights. No bi-pod, lights, mounting rails or anything. His is cool no doubt, but I don't have any batteries to die, and I can hold mine ready at my shoulder for a lot longer than his. "Better" is very subjective. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

(Old) picture of the premature opening in the aircraft door
wolfriverjoe replied to peek's topic in Safety and Training
There was one in Austrailia a while back, reserve prematured after bumping the pin on the door frame. Tore the entire tail section off the Caravan. Pilot managed to keep control (sort of) and everyone including the pilot and observer got out ok. Jumper who prematured got killed by the tail. There's a video of it (reporter talks to the pilot, observer and a couple of the jumpers a few years after it happened) on here somewhere. The video by a camera flyer of the plane going down is both incredible and chilling. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." No, not necessarily. The "gun nuts" want to talk about the technical and asthetic aspects of this particular (somewhat silly and over-the-top IMO) shotgun. Not every "gun" thread needs to be about gun rights. But some virulently anti-gun posters wish to chime in as to why this particular gun should be unavailable to the general public. IIRC, there was a very expensive semi-auto only version of the Atchisson out (late 80's/early 90's) that was not too well made. It was classed as "AOW" by the BATF at the same time as the Street Sweeper and the SPAS-12. And some hoplophobes will always make a comment in any gun related thread about how bad guns are, how insane the "gun nuts" are, and how much better off the world would be if there weren't any guns. And then those who feed the trolls respond and it turns into THIS Typical SC "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Watch the Youtube link in the OP. The recoil is moderated to the point that it is controllable. It looks big and heavy, but so is a squad automatic. It fits certain needs, but to be honest, I don't have any of those needs. For me, my 870 fits what I need (for a shotgun). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." And since they're both dogs, how come Goofy always walks upright, while Pluto is always on all-four's? Dang that global warming! Now it's spread to the outer reaches of the solar system, and it's making dogs look sun-burned! And while Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse both date within their species (although I've always wondered if it isn't incest because both couples, while not married, share the same last name), Goofy the dog dates Clarabelle the Cow. A bit odd, no?? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

cost to open dropzone?
wolfriverjoe replied to DroptheMan04's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Define "real airport". There's a public airport - open to the public and run by a government entity (city or county usually). There's a private airport - often open to the public, but run by a private group or individual. My DZ is located on such an airport. Open to the public, but private property. Regitered with the FAA and it has a 3-letter ID (W34). There's a real private airport. Only open to the owners. It may or may not be regisered with the FAA. If it's not, then the owner will be in a tough position when the state highway commission decides to route a highway right across the middle of the runway. (I am aware of this happening, the state basically said "We wouldn't be able to do this to a real airport, but this is just a field that you use as a runway, too bad"). If the proper notams are filed, then you are good to go. I know of a USPA DZ at an unregisered airport. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Buying that Fisrt Rig/Internet scams
wolfriverjoe replied to richravizza's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
One other thing - Most legit sellers will understand your concers with scammers and will make an effort to prove their legitamacy. Pics of the gear with a close up of serial nmbers, references, that sort of thing. It isn't too hard to ID the scammers. Keep your eyes open, if it seems too good to be true it probably is. There's lots of gear out there (except for what you're looking for of course) so don't be afraid to walk away. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Not really. At close range it's great, but no shotgun is of any real use beyond about 100yds. That's just the nature of the cartridge. One skilled soldier with a .30cal rifle (M14) could easily take out a large group armed with these shotguns, as long as he could engage them beyond 100yds. Mag capacity and rate of fire are much greater than for other shotguns, but (especially for military situations) shotguns are of limited utility. What they are good for, they are great for, but they aren't good in a lot of places. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Why not? It's just a shotgun. No different, other than capacity from any other auto 12ga. The "street sweeper" (a cheap 12ga with a drum mag) and the SPAS-12 (a french semi-auto 12ga with some nice tactical feartures) and a few others were classed as "Any Other Weapon" by the ATF some years ago, making them as restriced as silencers, short barrelled weapons and full autos. Just like the "assault weapons, it was because of perceptions more than realities. And the Russians have been making and importing the Saiga for some time now. The Atchisson is a M-16/AR-15 platform, the Saiga is an AK platform. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I've got the Texas weather blues

You got that right. We got another 8" of snow on Tues. It won't melt until the end of March at the earliest. Then wait for the (grass) runways to dry out. If I get to jump before mid April I will be very happy. Suffice to say my sympathy towards the OP is a bit limited "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Buying that Fisrt Rig/Internet scams
wolfriverjoe replied to richravizza's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Go through a trusted dealer. Search "Rigger as Escrow" Short version: Seller ships the rig to a dealer/rigger for inspection. Rigger tells you its good, you send money. Seller gets money, tells rigger to send you the rig. You get an inspected rig. The inspection will cost something, the escrow may or may not (some places include the escrow in the inspection). IMO, the small cost (relative to the cost of the rig) for the inspection and extra shipping is well worth it. At your experience level, you're going to want anything you buy inspected by a pro before you jump it anyway. This community is small enough that finding a 3rd party that you and the seller agree on isn't too hard. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
No, I usually just dice it down to 1/4" or so and put it in the salad. Or, for cherry or grape tomatoes, I just eat them whole.

Situation I never thought of until it happened

So even under a 2000lb load, the mini's only take 24lbs of pull force? That would be a 10+ G load for a jumper under 200#. That's enough to put you out, and I don't think I could lift my arms at that G-load. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
