If she runs...will Hillary Clinton become the next president?
wolfriverjoe replied to Dantes's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, you are assuming that if she runs, she will win the nomination. I don't know who might giver her a solid challenge, but she had a pretty good chance in 08, until a little known Senator from Illinois launched his campaign. I actually have THIS one. (mine is Left hand drive, the one in the pic is RHD). But same car, same year, same color. The Cobra roadster (427 SC Cobra) is on my wish list too. A good replica can be had for $50k or so. A Pantera would be cool too. But, as others have said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How does whatever group you register your vehicles work over there? It's the DMV here, might be the MOT or similar over there. Do you have the title in hand for it? Did the seller sign it over to you? Did you register it in your name? Over here, if the title has been transferred to you, anyone the thief resells it to won't be able to obtain the title. It would show as yours, and the transfer wouldn't work. Again, France isn't the US and I don't know how things work over there. But here in the US, if you can show that it's your bike, with proof like a title; and can find the bike, like at the sellers house; then you just call the cops, get one to come with you, show up and say "Hey! That's MINE! You sold it to me. Here's proof (show title)." The cop then says "Give her the bike." Charges may or may not be filed. But you'd have your bike back. No need to apologize for questions. That's how you learn. Yours are pretty typical "New Guy" questions. First thing - It isn't a cheap sport. A good starting point is to plan on spending $10000 US dollars (yes, that's Ten Thousand Dollars). That's all your training to your first license and all the gear you need to jump. It can be done for less, but it's a good number to start with. Training - RAPS is apparently what we call "Static Line Progression" here in the US. It's a different progression, but the skills you need to demonstrate and the minimum jump numbers are no different. Most AFF classes take you to "solo student" status. Not all the way to your first license. You need the first license (A here in the US) to just show up at a DZ and jump. BPA rules have additional requirements (FS1?) to jump with other jumpers. This is a question much, much better asked in person at the DZ you intend to train at. Price - It can go up year to year, but has been pretty stable over the past few years. Its more tied to fuel prices than anything else. When fuel prices spike, jump tickets go up. Depending on the DZ, most places don't require advanced reservations for normal jumps. Students (and tandems) need reservations because of the need for instructors to conduct the jumps. How many jumps? Depends on your motivation, schedule and budget. It can range from tens to hundreds. There's minimum currency requirements for each license level. Gear - You won't need anything at first. The DZ should provide what you need to jump for your student jumps. Typical first purchases are goggles, a less expensive helmet (Benny or ProTec are good choices) a logbook and an altimeter. Add a jumpsuit and a rig (and maybe gloves) and that's all you need. You will figure out what you need for a jumpsuit as you go along. Its not unusual for a more experienced jumper to sell you an older suit that they no longer want (or fit into). Rigs - New will run you $6000 US dollars or more. That's a basic rig, fancy stuff like embroidery, "pretty" hardware, and other stuff isn't really necessary but looks nice. There really isn't much difference between the "Top of the Line" and the rest. Used is usually a better choice for a first rig. There are reputable dealers who stand behind their products, some will help you find what you need (for a cost). You can buy an entire, complete rig. Or you can buy each piece individually. Or you my find a Harness/Container with a reserve (and/or an AAD) and then find the main separately. You won't need or even want your own rig until you are fairly far along in your training. The gear used by students is usually a fairly large canopy, and has some extra things needed for students and their instructors. By the time you will be looking for a rig, you will have a better idea what you want. There will often be people at your DZ who are willing to help you figure out what you want and how to get it without getting ripped off. You may well find someone at your DZ (or known by someone at your DZ) that is selling a rig that would be appropriate for you. Age is a somewhat debatable subject. Wear and tear is more important than calendar age. But some riggers won't work on gear that is "too old" and older gear may not be appropriate for some kinds of jumping (mainly freeflying). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Wilson_(Texas_politician) AKA, Charlie Wilson's War Well, not really. Hekmatyar was only allied with the Taliban for a few months. Which was after they defeated him militarily. He fled to Iran after that. He was never a "senior Taliban leader." More an ally of convenience who was discarded as soon as it was clear he was more of a problem than he was worth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulbuddin_Hekmatyar "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." What's you're best traveling tip? International or domestic
wolfriverjoe replied to promise5's topic in The Bonfire
That's not entirely true. The con artists, hustlers and pickpockets want an easy score, not a huge hassle. They know what they are looking for and will skip over anyone who looks like they might be trouble. Pay attention to what's going on, carry yourself well, be in reasonable shape and most of the bad guys will look for an easier victim. (most, not all) Kinda like not having to outrun the bear. He was also the hitman "Reace" in "Silver Streak", the first Richard Pryor/Gene Wilder movie (His character was killed on top of a train with a speargun). And he was the Chetnik Captain, Droznik (sp?) in "Force 10 From Navarone" the bad movie from the rather good Alistar MacLean book (sequel to "Guns Of Navarone"). And who can forget the head "Kanamit" in the Twilight Zone "To Serve Man" (It's a cookbook)? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." When did we arm the Taliban? They didn't exist as an entity until the ISI (Pakistani Intelligence) created them in the mid-90s to try and stabilize Afghanistan. We gave a lot of arms to Massoud, during the Soviet war, but he ended up fighting against the Taliban in the 90s, and was assassinated by AQ operatives posing as reporters on Sept 9, 2001. Riots over a shoting turn into free jordans and 40's
wolfriverjoe replied to Anvilbrother's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't know what the specific rules are in PA, but a lot of states make police stations (along with schools, prisons and secure mental health care facilites) "No Concealed Carry" areas. Civilian carry, that is. Cops are allowed to be armed just about everywhere. It's usually part of the law defining concealed carry. So the answer to your question is "Probably yes." Loading order. Manifest procedures and policies (is a ticket refunded if the pilot decides not to let the load out?) Known turbulence issues (If the wind is out of a particular direction, is there any "normal" landing area that should be avoided?) Packing area policies (is there an area that is reserved for tandems/students/instructors/paid packers? Are there rules for food/drinks in the packing area?) I'll probably come up with more later, but that's what I can think of right now. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I agree that there are times (as you said, limited amount of circumstances) where military tactics and the "Warrior Mentality" are appropriate for civilian cops. An active shooter situation is certainly one. It's a situation where neutralization of the bad guy takes priority over just about everything else, including "collateral damage," because of the amount of damage the shooter is capable of doing. BUT (and it's a HUGE "But") outside of those very rare and limited circumstances, the "Warrior Mentality" is totally wrong. Unacceptable. Unprofessional. The recent case in Florida, where a "Man with a Gun" call ended up with a lot of shots fired and a dead bystander (from police bullets) is a good example. The one in New York City, where there were something like 9 people shot (including ricochets and fragments), all of them from the cops is also a good one. The "Warrior Mentality" needs to be left behind almost all of the time. And it's not happening. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." handy dandy repack date wheel gizmo thingamajig
wolfriverjoe replied to keithbar's topic in The Bonfire
Oh my. That's pretty complicated. All you have to do is figure out how many months in the repack cycle have 31 days. For the OP it's March, May, July & August. Subtract one day for each of those months from the day of the repack (add 2 if February is in the mix). In this case, it's 7 minus 4 equals 3. Which means Krisanne was right (which is no surprise). And leap seconds are pretty cool. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -

Wow, what a stretch. If the best you have to offer is to invent words to put in someone's mouth, you're not ready to debate with the grown-ups. I was thinking more along the lines of "If you are going to publicly show your bigotry, intolerance, ignorance and hatred; AND hide them behind your "religious beliefs," then don't be surprised when it comes back to haunt you in the future. Video reportedly shows beheading of reporter Steven Sotloff by ISIS
wolfriverjoe replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
Yep. They are kidnappers and extortionists. The European journalists that were freed had good sized ransoms paid for their release. Supposedly they had demanded over $100 million for Foley. I haven't heard yet what the demand was for Sotloff, but I'd bet it was similar. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Small Frame - Limited Options - Looking For Advice
wolfriverjoe replied to Xitesmai's topic in Gear and Rigging
Freeflying includes a lot higher speeds, in addition to the unusual attitudes that generate airflow across areas that don't normally see it. I wouldn't sit or stand or go headdown in a Dolphin. I also wouldn't do any extended backflying. But normal loops, rolls and the odd biff, bump and tumble that happen in normal RW would probably present no problems. As far as where to look, there's a few pages on Facebook that have gear for sale. But the best place is at your own DZ. Put the word out that you are looking for a rig. Ask people to ask around at other DZs too. There's a lot of gear out there that is handed down from new jumper to new jumper. It's not advertised or aggressively marketed. It's usually sold by "word-of-mouth." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -

Salt water powered car given licence for road testing
wolfriverjoe replied to rifleman's topic in The Bonfire
Right. The same people that kept the 200 mile per gallon carburetor off the market. Seriously, my dad, who would be 85 years old if he were still alive, said the 200 MPG carburetor conspiracy story was going around when he was a teenager. LOL Yep. Kinda like the "Nazi Synthetic Fuel" story. The Germans did develop synthetic fuels & lubricants. They had to when they lost their oil supplies. But there was no "Vast Conspiracy" to keep them from the public. They are widely available today. At 3 to 4 times the cost. If the technology gets patented, it's public knowledge - patents are a matter of public record. It can't be "kept secret." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." What if he hadn't been drunk? Honest question. I drive truck for a living, and I'm required to put out warning markers (flares or reflective triangles) if I'm on the side of the road (day or night). If I don't, I can get a ticket. These guys were pushing a dark car down a dark road. If a driver had come along and hit them, but wasn't drunk, who would be at fault? Who would be to blame? The reality is that most (if not all) of us will go for the main. The muscle memory, the repetition, the fact that even if we have practiced pulling the reserve, we end every freefall by reaching back and pitching the main. It's been so deeply ingrained in our consciousness that pulling the reserve instead is pretty unlikely. There have been multiple examples where people get out low (due to airplane issues) and plan to pull the reserve due to the low altitude, but end up pulling the main instead. The "gun guys" have the mantra "train like you fight because you'll fight like you've trained." Tons and tons of stories of bad habits in training getting people killed when it got real. Apparently now Smokey Bear is a tool of our totalitarian overlords. Or something like that. No, not really anyway. Most of the campers that go into the woods are such tools that they need instructions on how to roast marshmallows. And so our totalitarian overlords (or Mary Poppins, after all it is a "Nanny State") hide some valid fire safety info in an article about how to properly roast a marshmallow. What are the odds that the OP has decided that "Dorkzone is nothing but a bunch of tools, jerks and assholes. He hasn't posted in any other threads and hasn't posted in this one in a while. Of course, HE is the one who came on here, and in his first post decided to lecture everyone on "How dangerous it is" using really faulty statistics and even more flawed premises. 10000 jumps is 3 or 4 times a "normal" career and no two jumpers are facing the same level or risk, even the same jumper faces different levels of risk on different jumps. He seemed a bit "put out" that we didn't fall at his feet, thanking him for pointing out these really important things that we didn't have any idea of (we really need a "sarcasm font). It's also as much "Fire Safety" as it is about roasting marshmallows. Kind of cute how they sneak in all that stuff about safely starting, keeping and extinguishing a campfire in there. Well, how many of them use that full scholarship to actually get an education? How many actually graduate with a usable degree? How many actually make it to the NFL? College Football is a huge money maker for the big schools. The coaches get paid millions. The NCAA is pretty much a cartel. There's a pending lawsuit that calls them that. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/lawsuit-seeks-end-ncaas-unlawful-175448180--ncaaf.html One of the more repugnant things I've come across lately is that the NCAA retains rights to game footage forever. They are making money off selling footage from games that are decades old, and the players in the footage get... Nothing. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
