  1. Not to me. The use of force was justified, but what we saw was well in excess. As I recall at the time, the video prompted many departments to consider buying clear plastic batons that wouldn't show on video as well. Another result was the concept of "force continium" and "escalation of force." Those basically mean that if the stick doesn't work, don't keep using the stick, escalate to the next level (taser or gun). In today's environment, if King kept trying to get up after repeated baton strikes, they would just shoot him. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 2. It's not just the deaths. How many people are put in the hospital by cops? How many of those are justified? How many innocent people are wrongly arrested, jailed, tried and convicted? That's not all on the cops, it's also on the DA. How often in recent times have people been arrested/beaten/had their phones taken or destroyed while vidoeing cops behaving badly? The huge rise in video cameras in peoples hands (mostly in cell phones) has given us a huge ability to see this kind of stuff. And the cops don't seem to like it. And BTW, Kelpdiver brought up Rodney King. Believe it or not, that wasn't a "police brutality" situation. The cops didn't just beat on him for the hell of it. King kept trying to get up. The first jury that acquitted the cops got it right (IMHO). But... There's a ton of videos of cops out of control. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 3. Well, one very important thing to work on is canopy skills. The B license canopy card will give you direction with that. If you are worried about hurting/getting hurt when jumping in groups, keep it small. 2, 3 or 4 is small enough to keep is reasonably safe, yet still challenging. With 2 jumpers, you will both fly to each other, which can mask some inadequacies by one of you. Make it 3 or 4 and everyone has to do their job. If you have an A license, you should have the skills to safely do 3 or 4 ways. Altitude awareness and tracking are fairly important for the breakoff & opening. Depending on where you jump, there may be load organizers. If not, try to find a couple people willing to jump with you. Solos get old fast. Some may disagree, but finding another newer jumper can be a help. You both need to improve, so neither is going to blame the other for "messing up the jump." If you go that route, try to find an instructor or coach to help plan the jumps. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 5. I would say "it's interesting." And then I would ask for some fact checking. Because the little I did found that those are quotes from Rush Limbaugh's show. And that's the only place. The Paul Bergla quote seems to be from 2012, and is nowhere near what was originally said. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 6. When you say "having their needs met by others," does that include health care? Like depending on Medicare? I don't see "Young Voters" as any different than "Middle Aged Voters" or "Old Voters." They vote for their self interest. Some of them are dumb enough to believe what the politicians promise. I've seen FB posts that tout the "Truth and Clear Speaking" of one party vs the "Lies and False Promises" of the other. And I've seen it go both ways. And the US is the largest economy in the world. What we do affects the entire world (note our 2008 housing bubble collapse). I also welcome outside viewpoints. It's always interesting to hear a different point of view. Often, an outsider will see things that our own prejudices miss. I try to be honest enough with myself to know that. That's one of the reasons I get my news from a variety of sources. It's absolutely fascinating to hear the same story spun different ways. It's also pretty cool to hear an outside view. Local PBS has BBC (Brit) and NHK (Japan) news on TV. Watching stories about the Ebola situation can be very interesting. Last night on BBC, there was a story about Ms Hickox in Maine. The reporter said something like "In the battle between fear and science, fear is winning." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 7. Are you proud that you are gay? Have you participated in any "Gay Pride" activities? Have you put forth any serious effort to enhance or improve your "Gayness"? Have you gone out and recruited any straight people and "converted" them to "being gay"? Note: Johnny is a bit of a joker. He sometimes comes in here and stirs up a bit of shit. He's also openly gay. The above comments are a joke. I'm pretty certain Johnny will take them that way. But some folks aren't aware of all the subtexts and previous posting history. Others just have a stick up their ass and no sense of humor at all. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 8. you (or he?) are missing the point - Example - A great female athlete is touted as an inspiration to girls everywhere. Bullshit - why can't she be a role model for anyone that wants to be an athlete. Michael Jordan should able to inspire ANY kid that likes basketball. not just boys, not just minorities. etc etc etc..... If we can't get past that, then these cosmetically targetted role models just emphasis differences in appearance rather than greatness in actions and accomplishments. It would be so much cooler if he clearly wants to be an inspiration to anyone that wants to be a business success. Because we still aren't at "equality" for much. Women, minorities, GLBT, the list goes on. I'd love to see the day when none of that matters. But the fact remains that this year was the first time ever that an openly gay man was drafted to an NFL team. So it was a big story. And he was "an inspiration for gay athletes everywhere" whether he wanted to be or not. And how about the Super Bowl in 2006? The first one ever where both coaches were black. It was also the first ever where either coach was black. So, rather ironically, it was the first Super Bowl where the winning coach was black and the first where the losing coach was. We are certainly a long, long way from where we were just a few decades ago. But we have a long way yet to go. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 9. the 'if I can just save one child it's worth it crowd' will argue that you can't know that all of them are doing that I've met nurses, lots of them, so many are conscientious and fit and self aware. SO many are fat, smokers, lazy, selfish and self involved. (just like any group of people in any field of employment) Well, three is a very small sample, but it appears that Phang, Vinson & Spenser were all self monitoring fairly well. They all sought help at the first sign of real symptoms. And Vinson was aware that she was running a slightly elevated temperature and called the CDC for advice. 10. At the risk of repeating myself, that's all well and good, but in the context of "contact with bodily fluids", the "aerosol" discussion still doesn't address whether it can be transmitted when someone puts their hand on a freshly-sneezed loogie honked out onto, say, a handrail on a train or bus by someone who's contagious. I'm really not trying to be alarmist here; I just want the question addressed directly and not sidestepped. It's actually a really good question. I don't know if there is a definitive answer. I was having this discussion somewhere else (FB) and during the course of "don't panic, it's not that transmittable" found out that there has been no live, intact virus found in sweat. Looking around a bit on google, I found THIS Study of various body fluids from sick people and where virus was & wasn't found. I found it amusing that they even tested a body louse to see if it would be infected (it wasn't). Sputum (the technical term for "loogie") was 0 for 2. I don't think that's a big enough sample to reach a definitive conclusion, but it is an indication. I have heard (news radio, most likely NPR) that Ebola can be contracted via aerosol (you can catch it that way), but not really transmitted that way (sick people aren't putting out virus when they cough or sneeze). And the Hickox story is getting rather silly. I hadn't followed it that closely, and after hearing a couple conflicting reports, I did a bit of looking. She showed a fever on entering the country with a forehead scan. Skin temp can be a very unreliable measure of actual body temp. So they took an oral temp. She showed normal (98.6) and showed no other symptoms. So, rather than saying "it must have been a bad forehead scan, let her go," they threw her into "jail." She is still not showing any symptoms, but Maine wants to keep her in quarantine. She has said her patience is running out and she won't cooperate much longer (paraphrased). I don't blame her. There's no valid medical or scientific reason to keep her isolated. The politicians are overreacting. As usual. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 11. After Pearl Harbour you still weren't at war with Germany until Germany declared war on the US. Which part of that do you disagree with? I don't really disagree with it. But if Germany hadn't declared war on us first, we would have ended up doing it eventually. My point was (and is) that the US was standing on the sidelines, watching Germany take over Europe and watching Japan take over Asia while doing very little. Jerry B's comment about the isolationists was very correct. There were also some fairly prominent folks who were Nazi sympathizers (if not outright supporter/admirers). Lindbergh was one of the most notable. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  12. For the US even that wasn't enough. Germany declared war on you. Not really. We waited until Japan attacked us at Pearl Harbor. War against Germany was sort of an afterthought. Follow the thread. He was specifically talking about the European theatre, not the Pacific. We probably never would have entered the war if Japan hadn't attacked us. We would have stood by and watched the Nazis take over most of Europe. We spent over 2 years doing just that. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 14. It's NPR. What are they going to compensate him with? A tote bag or a coffee mug? And it's radio. Listeners, not views. And the vast majority of interviews are "phone ins." What expenses did he incur? And you also said There's a huge difference between "taking one for the team" and "getting hosed because the politicians are panicky, ignorant sheep." If your "state epidemiologist" is halfway competent, he'll say "let them go where they want to, have them take their temp every 6 to 8 hours, and if they start to show symptoms, get to medical care immediately." Exposure, if standard BBP protocols are followed, doesn't mean infection. And even if infection takes place, they aren't going to be contagious until symptoms start to show up. And The health care community (WHO & CDC in particular) have seen and studied Ebola Zaire for almost 40 years. There is a lot about it (particularly the host) that isn't understood, but how and how easily it's transmitted is. And I hope like all hell that it's easier to control than the flu (influenza). Despite vaccines, education and prevention, there are still thousands to tens of thousands of deaths each year in the US. But we don't really worry about that. It's "just the flu." 15. For christ sake billvon. Yes i did. To point out what i was refering too. To someone who drug in cfcs and acid rain No, you said that humans cannot change the climate, except on a local level. I would love to know how CO2 levels could change local climates. Or how CO2 levels could change locally. Post #24 Negligible at best Now, I think they can do horrible damage to local eco-systems. But I feel it is very arrogant of us to think we can alter global climate (with CO2 for christs sake) in the way alarmists predict "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 16. I disagree with you Andy. How many people have come down with Ebola through casual contact with Duncan, Phang or Vinson? Duncan was symptomatic (and contagious) for at least two days prior to his hospitalization and isolation. And he puked on the sidewalk outside the hospital when he was sent home the first time. And how many have gotten sick? I think the isolation and quarantine was the same sort of overreaction we've been seeing all over. Simple panic and ignorance. And Hickox reportedly has been released. She got a lawyer and threatened to sue. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  17. How about the KKK? They didn't burn a "plus sign" or a "T", it was a cross. Or how about the Irish "Troubles"? Protestant against Catholic. As vicious and ugly as any of the sectarian violence in Baghdad. Islam is the current "Bad Boy," but Christians are far from innocent over the years. 18. Well, Russian (and older Soviet) sub technology was always fairly good. Dangerous as hell for the sailors, but pretty good at infiltrating and evading. And the Soviet navy spent a lot of time sneaking around in Swedish waters back in the "old days." The only time Sweden caught one was when it screwed up and ran aground. Now that Putin is flexing his muscles (figuratively speaking), it's not surprising that they are back up to their old tricks. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 24. There's a separate "Cafe" part. There has to be for health code reasons. The people, dishes & utensils, even the air can't go directly from the "cat" part to the "food" part. Dishes have to be washed before they can go back. People buy their food & coffee at the "cafe" part. They can then take it to the "cat" part to consume it, but don't have to. 25. No, they don't serve "cat." I'd put that in Billy's Sick & Twisted thread. It's a thing that's big in Japan, where you can go to a cafe, have a cup of coffee, and pet & cuddle with a cat. This is similar, but is a part of the Cat Town cat rescue mission. The profits go towards the animal shelter, and the overall idea is to get these cats into permanent homes. They opened for the first time yesterday. Lots of positive publicity, including Wall St Journal, Good Morning America & Time Online Cat Town's site: http://www.cattowncafe.com/?og+1 Full disclaimer: My sister is deeply involved with this. She has worked very hard for a very long time to help this group (not just the cafe). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
