Student Etiquette-Getting Own Altimeter
wolfriverjoe replied to GrayAnderson's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
See what your instructor says. But, typical first purchases are your own altimeter, goggles and helmet. Analog vs Digital is a personal preference. I'm an "old guy" and I prefer analog. I can read the needle/dial faster than I can process digits. The "Tap on the face to make it catch up" is far more a habit than a necessity. Unless something is sticking, it shouldn't need that. You don't ever see people tapping on the face in freefall, just in the plane. Nervous habit, perhaps? Mechanical analogs also don't ever need batteries. Or have them go dead at the worst possible time. Digitals, though, fail with a dead screen, so you know it's dead. When an analog fails, it still shows something, just the wrong thing. In case you haven't noticed it, both have their pros and cons. You have to decide which is the best option for you. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." If they do it'll be a 5-4 decision. there has been a long running trend that the fruits of innocent error are admissible evidence. Particularly if the guy consented to the search (that article did not say), tough luck for him. it does stretch credibility that a LEO didn't know a basic aspect of the vehicle code - certainly feel like a pretext to go on a fishing expedition. Well, it's really hard (IMO) to call ignorance of the laws the cop is supposed to be enforcing an "innocent error." Or, as is the phrase I've heard more often, "Good Faith." It doesn't, however surprise me that the cop didn't know what the vehicle code was. I can tell you a bunch of horror stories about that kind of stuff. Although there are a couple of good ones: A guy in NJ had a car that was old enough to qualify for "classic" plates. That meant he didn't need the annual inspection (or it's accompanying windshield sticker). The cop flat out refused to listen to the simple fact that classic plates meant an exemption from the sticker requirement and wrote a ticket (even threatened to have the car towed if the driver didn't shut up). So it went to court. Ticket was dismissed immediately. And the judge was unimpressed that the cop's ignorance was wasting the court's time. And the judge gave a rather scathing lecture on the need for the cop to actually know the laws he was enforcing. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." You will have to repeat a level if there is a layoff. It's not as much "forgetting" as losing currency. Being current is important in this sport. For experienced jumpers as well as students. You will probably have to repeat a level or two no matter what. All the jumps count towards your license. Go jump. Get as many as you can before winter shuts you down. Spend the winter going over what you learned. Goofing off on here is also a good way to waste invest time during winter. Just be careful about taking advice about training from here. Some of the info is good, some is excellent, some is pure and unadulterated shit. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Arkansas gun range becomes the first to exclude Muslims
wolfriverjoe replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
And some people just never grow up. I'm not a liberal. The opinion I was expressing came straight from the Founding Fathers. If you've decided that they were too liberal for you, then you need to find another country, America isn't for you. Well, one thing the so-called "Patriots" tend to focus on is the "Pledge of Allegiance." You know, the little mantra that ends with "Liberty and Justice for all" (emphasis mine). Except it's pretty clear that some of them only want "liberty and justice for those who look like me, think like me, and believe in the same God as I do." Everyone else is the "enemy" and doesn't deserve and liberty or justice. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Arkansas gun range becomes the first to exclude Muslims
wolfriverjoe replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
If he can demonstrate that he can safely operate his gun (My range doesn't rent them out), if he can show me that he will be able to understand when the range is cold (no handling of the guns), if I can be reasonably confident that he won't pose a safety hazard; yes. If not, no. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -

Not really. The "mammy" character is pretty bad. Typical characterization for the time they were made, but still pretty bad. I would expect "Amos & Andy" would receive the same warning. Arkansas gun range becomes the first to exclude Muslims
wolfriverjoe replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
Maybe. First off, the range I volunteer at is not a "Gun Rental" range. It's just a place to shoot. Shooters have to bring their own guns and ammunition. So if the guy has his own gun, knows how to operate it correctly, can understand my demonstration of the main rules, and I feel confident enough that he will understand the range commands that I give, then probably. On a less hypothetical note, we have a large Hmong community around here. They came as refugees from Viet Nam in the early 80s. Many are avid small game hunters. Their previous life often included subsistence hunting, and they have continued after settling here. Many of the older ones speak little or no English. But the kids usually come with the older ones. And the kids translate well enough that there usually aren't too many problems. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Arkansas gun range becomes the first to exclude Muslims
wolfriverjoe replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
I can't answer for Bolas, but I know that I would (and do) allow it as long as one of the group understands both languages and can translate. I take some extra time to go over the rules and expectations, and I watch the non-English-speaker as stuff is being translated to see if there's any confusion. Most of what needs to be communicated can be done so with simple signs, and "NO" is "no" in most languages. And yes, DanG, it probably would have helped if I had read the article in the OP. Arkansas gun range becomes the first to exclude Muslims
wolfriverjoe replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
What similar business situation? If I had a couple guys acting weird or unsafe? Kick them off the range. And that seems to be the situation here. The thread title that has the words "First to exclude Muslims" strongly implies that any and all Muslims would be banned from the range. Which would be both illegal and wrong IMO. The real story seems to be that she tossed a couple guys who were acting strangely, frightening other customers, and one couldn't prove citizenship. They just happened to appear to be Muslim. Which is not only her right, but her duty. If one or both had "gone Postal" and hurt or killed other people, there would be a huge outcry that she shouldn't have let them shoot. The customers that got scared and left would have told everyone about how odd those two were acting, and it would be all over the news. I volunteer as a range officer at a local shooting range, and watching out for "weirdos" is a small part of it. We don't rent guns, it's "BYO", so I don't check IDs or anything like that, but I still have to keep an eye open for potential trouble. And on the citizenship thing - The law says that non-resident aliens aren't allowed to possess firearms. There's a bit of debate as to whether that means "own" or simply "hold and shoot." I do know that there are rental ranges all over the country that cater to tourists. The ones in Hawaii do very well renting to the Japanese tourists who have seen lots of movies, but are very restricted at home. If the rules at that particular range require citizenship, then it's not out of line to deny access to those who can't prove it. But I have to admit, I'd have a hard time proving my own citizenship under normal circumstances. A driver's license isn't really enough anymore and I don't carry my passport on a regular basis. Arkansas gun range becomes the first to exclude Muslims

I was one year old at the outbreak of WW II. I have talked to my mother numerous times about this and she still defends it. My dad, who served in the Navy in the south Pacific, went to his grave calling them 'Japs.' There was a very strong belief, here on the west coast, that the Japanese were going to invade the mainland. IMO the fears were somewhat 'reasonable.' Jerry Baumchen Hi back at you Jerry. -
Arkansas gun range becomes the first to exclude Muslims
wolfriverjoe replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
First off - No, she can't "do what she wants." If she was excluding blacks, or women, or any other group, she'd be in the wrong. As she is here. And I certainly hope Obama doesn't "have the balls" to unilaterally deny a group of people basic civil rights, force them to abandon huge amounts of legally held property, force them into concentration camps, and on and on. FDR didn't have to do it. There's pretty much zero indication that any acts of sabotage were prevented by the internment of the Japanese-Americans. It was a horrendous action based on unreasonable fears and hysteria. And just about every reasonable historian has agreed that is was terribly, terribly wrong. Note that the US government has apologized and paid compensation to the survivors. That's a pretty good indication that it was not a correct action. Yep, some of those are pretty creepy. One of them is Iluvtofly's (Cindy's) avatar pic - the bear taking off it's fur. The unicorn that had stabbed something else was pretty cool too. I've thought that Accurate Depictions Of Disease Microbes in "plush animals" was pretty cool. Again, like Rule 34, if it's strange, weird or creepy, then you can probably get it as a stuffed animal. I'm thinking in that case there is far more at work than "they fear for their lives". How about they are going to end this car chase before some innocent person gets killed by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not according to what was said along with the video. It was simply that they were afraid of being run over by the car (not entirely unreasonable) as the driver was trying to escape. If they hadn't jumped out of the cop car and run towards the suspect's car the instant the suspect's car was momentarily stopped, it probably wouldn't have ended that way. They could have stayed in their car until they were reasonably certain the suspect car was done for, or they could have stayed behind the protection of the cop car. Instead, they chose to put themselves into danger by running right at the suspect's car. If the suspect had had a gun and the willingness to use it, they would have been easy targets. Call it the "heat of the chase" or something like that, it's a known issue for cops in high speed chases. And I'm not aware that potential for harm down the road is a valid justification for use of lethal force. Anywhere. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." And how many times did the "cops have no other choice" due to bad technique or stupid tactical errors? How many times have the cops put themselves into situations that ended up as shootings, but could have been easily avoided had the cops used better judgement? The incident with the old man in his own car is pretty high on that list. The cops got too close, startled the guy, and shot him when he reacted. The incident in the OP is also a good example. The cop told him to produce his ID, and shot him when he complied too quickly. I've mentioned in a previous post a much better way to have handled it. I've seen a video somewhere where the cops are chasing a guy, the guy spins out and stalls the car. The cops get out and approach the car, just as the guy fires it back up. As he starts moving to escape, he heads in the general direction of the cops. They "fear for their lives" and unload into the car, killing the guy. It certainly looks like he isn't deliberately trying to run over the cops, but just to get away. If the cops hadn't gotten out of their car, or hadn't approached the other car until they were reasonably certain that the car wasn't going to move again, the guy wouldn't have had to die. And of course, the shooting was ruled "justifiable." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Not entirely true. The places that have put those kind of "Use a gun, go to prison" mandatory sentencing laws in place have seen a reduction in gun crime. Once the bad guys start to understand that they are really going to be put away for a long time if they get caught doing these kinds of crimes, they tend to not do them. One of the first was Project Exile. It was rather unusual to see both the NRA and the Brady group support something. Others were opposed to it because it extended federal court jurisdiction further into what some thought should be state and local issues. How well it worked is a matter of some debate (were the reductions caused by the program or was it just a coincidence?). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." ^This. Sort of like "Rule 34" (google it if you don't know what it is). Billy should have made the title "Toys you won't see at "Toys R Us." But that could have just been a fun diversion in the 'Sick & Twisted' thread. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I know a few car guys who have used Plasti Dip as a "quick and dirty" alternative to powder coating wheels. It's good at hiding little imperfections, easy to apply, and while it's not the most durable, it does hold up fairly well and is easy enough to peel and redo as needed. I've also seen it used as a "temporary bra" on the front end to protect from rock chips. As was said, put on a bunch of coats and it peels off easily. It really isn't. You said that you experienced it while dressed for riding. It sounded like the cop explained that your reaching into your jacket could have been taken as reaching for a gun. Since there was no real reason for you to be doing something that stupid, he didn't panic. Unfortunately, traffic stops are the second most dangerous thing a cop can do (first is a domestic violence call). The cop has no real idea of who you are, what you may have done and how you will react. You may well have just robbed the gas station down the road and killed the clerk. Or you might be a white supremacist fugitive from justice (real situation). The cop just doesn't know. My ex-wife had a cop lecture her rather severely about reaching into the glove box - she had gone for the registration just as he reached the window. He wasn't real happy about it. She wasn't either, but she understood better after I explained why the cop freaked out (the cop never explained why, he just bitched). As GeorgiaDon said in the other thread (we seem to be posting very similar stuff at about the same time): By keeping calm, keeping my hands in plain view and moving slowly, I don't make the cop uncomfortable. That makes him a bit more willing to let me off easier. And there are some areas that are basically war zones. I see it when I'm on the road. Cops are always 2 to a car. The second one will take a position either by the cop car, or behind the subject car while the first goes to the driver's window. They will often pull all the people out of the car and have them sit on the guardrail while they talk to the driver (or go through the car). Proper training and technique allow the cops to minimize the risk by making it clear to the "bad guys" (some of them are really bad, too) that they are well covered and won't be able to get away with anything they might think to pull. Other cops get careless, turn their backs, allow hands to disappear, and on and on. Those cops sometimes get hurt or killed. Which makes the less competent cops all the more "trigger happy." I guess I don't see less use of force as a "shame." Civilians are run "over the coals" whenever there is a defensive gun use. It has a strong chilling effect on the use of deadly force (at least for those that take the time and effort to learn properly). There's way too much of it right now. GeorgiaDon mentioned a couple incidents that were similar to this (as in the cops were way too quick on the trigger). Maybe it will get the cops to stop putting themselves in positions where a "sudden movement" could be misinterpreted as a "deadly threat." The case in Florida(?) with the old man digging through his own car is one - Maybe instead of coming right up behind him and screaming "Don't move!!!", they should have stood back a few feet and waited for him to stand up on his own. Perhaps even taking positions far apart enough that they could cover each other properly. And in this case, where the cop told the guy to get his paperwork, then shot him for complying too eagerly, maybe the cop should have asked first - "Please don't move, but do you have your license, registration and insurance?" then "Without moving, please tell me where it is." I know that "slow and easy with hands in plain sight" is the best way to interact with cops. Not everyone does and not everyone remembers to in the "heat of the moment." If the cop is doing his job well, then he (or she) will remind the subject (maybe repeatedly) of this. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Depends on what plane. 182 - Dive out into a double front loop. The trick is to stop the front loop at the right time to pop out into a good boxman on your belly. Otter - Anything off of the camera step. There's just something really cool about climbing out and hanging on the outside of the plane while the others set up in the door. Skyvan - Either a "hop off the back (facing the back) and let the wind flip you into a backloop" gainer or the "hanging off the bar under the back watching the rest of the load exit over top of you." A running dive out the back is fun too. The further forward you start, the more of a run you get. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Here is the first one (actually her second tandem) that begins her journey (Each installment will have a link to the next): http://tailotherat.blogspot.com/2011/08/sky-diving-duck-ii-chicken-of-sky.html As others have said, this sport isn't for everyone. As others have said, perfectly normal. A very common fix is the "Butt Bungee," a little piece of shock cord that runs between the legstrap pads. Most new rigs have the little loops or channels already installed. If you don't have them, it's a quick job by a rigger to install them.
