Should you surrender to the police? (watch video)
wolfriverjoe replied to CameraNewbie's topic in Speakers Corner
For your first example (well dressed, driving a nice car): Wanna bet? "Driving While Black" covers most socio-economic strata. And for the 2nd example (gangsta car, gangsta music, gangsta appearance): Can the cop pull him over just for that? I don't think so. Although cops can always "find an excuse" to pull someone over. Hi Jerry, Wow. So what happened if you didn't have it on you? I can understand the concept of states placing any restrictions they choose on a license that they issue, but I doubt that this would have survived a serious court challenge. You don't give up all your rights just because you obtain a DL. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Iranian Phantom jet strikes the Islamic State in Iraq
wolfriverjoe replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
Except for the stuff they got during the Reagan years. Supposedly, they only got TOW missiles to use against the Iraqis, but there were a lot of rumors and speculation about spare parts for the US planes they had. And supposedly, the Iranians have gotten very, very creative at keeping those planes in the air. Aside from cannibalizing many of the planes to keep one or two going, the Russians and the Chinese have reverse engineered some stuff, the Iranians have adapted Chinese and Russian parts. Should you surrender to the police? (watch video)
wolfriverjoe replied to CameraNewbie's topic in Speakers Corner
It depends. Back in the 60's ( I'm not sure about now ) in Oregon, if were issued a Driver's License, the law req'd you to show to anyone who asked to see it, not just a LEO. Jerry Baumchen Agreed on "It depends." If you are exercising the privileges of the DL (driving a car), then you are. If you are just walking down the street, not so much. FWIW, it's the same thing for pilots. Anyone getting on the plane at the DZ is within their rights to ask the pilot to show his commercial license and 2nd class medical. But if a particular pilot isn't flying that day, he doesn't have to show it if he doesn't want to. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." She does not live near an airport. Boulder's airport is 4 miles away. Longmont's airport is 6 miles away. Really? I thought it was closer than that. Maybe it's that she is on the approach path. I could have sworn there was a letter of some sort when she bought the house. I remember it from one of the news stories linked in one of the threads. I took a quick look, but I can't find it again. I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time (or the last). Edit to add: Found it. http://www.examiner.com/article/critics-harass-pilots-and-businesses-of-longmont-airport The statement is given to people "in the airport influence zone." It doesn't say how big that is. But I doubt that 8 miles is still in it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." How wide can a step on a 182 be?
wolfriverjoe replied to baronn's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
^This. The 182 I do most of my jumps out of has a "Box Step" that's maybe a foot by a foot and a half. (no pic of it, sorry). You can have two people have a foot solidly on it, plus a "tippy toe" by the guy hanging way out on the strut. We put three out the door on a reasonably regular basis. It has several stripes of "grip tape" on the top of the step. It also has a couple strips going up the wheel strut from the step to just under the door. One of the TIs liked to put a foot there and wanted a better grip. I've fallen off more than once, but never because my foot slipped off the step. My understanding is that when the house was purchased, Ms Gibbs received a letter that stated very clearly that her house was near the airport, and that there was going to be airplane noise, and that the airport had expansion plans which would possibly increase the noise. When she or her fellow "airplane haters" were posting in the thread, I asked specifically about that letter. No response from the anti-airplane crowd. No real surprise at that. There is data to demonstrate it. At least there is for pilots. I just can't find it (forgot to put that in the last post). I don't know why USPA doesn't correlate accidents that way. I'm not in charge of that. It may be that it's not that big of an issue. Not everyone falls into the trap. Not everyone who does suffer from "100 jump wonder" syndrome needs to get hurt or killed to learn their lesson. Some learn it from a close call. No stats on those. I know I didn't suffer from it (too much anyway) in skydiving, because I did fall into it earlier in life. Personally, I got lucky and learned without serious consequences. No joke. And it's not necessarily about jump numbers. It's more about attitude. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect I only stumble on this a few years ago, but it explains so much about some of my former coworkers. So do I understand that there are no data suggesting that intermediate jumpers have more accidents? The Wikipedia article about the effect does not translate into real-life accidents without some more evidence. Do we have any support for the idea that intermediates get into proportionately more accidents or are more hazardous? If not, why not? Shouldn't somebody be keeping track of this if it's truly so dangerous? The idea of the "100 jump wonder" isn't a myth or a joke. It's a well known phenomenon in a wide variety of activities. Pilots (100 hour wonder) & motorcycles (Squid) are the two I know of personally. The "enough knowledge to get into trouble, but not enough to stay out of it" isn't new or unusual. Remember the line "Your ego is writing checks that your skills can't cash"? It doesn't affect everyone, but it's definitely out there. And USPA has taken steps to address it. Camera recommendations (C License) Wingsuit rules (200 minimum), canopy card for B license, all of those are in response to incidents or near-incidents caused by confidence exceeding actual skills. There's a thread in Swooping & Canopy right now about low timers on Stillettos. One guy is posting about a reserve loaded around 1.4 with fairly low jump numbers. He doesn't seem to think it's a bad idea, despite what others are saying. And then there's Sangi. He wanted to downsize & swoop. Despite being told he wasn't ready, he was pushing too hard too fast, he refused to listen. He came up with all sorts of rationalizations why he was different. He was better. The ground didn't recognize his extraordinary abilities and he's now in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He at least had the courage to come back and admit that he was wrong and should have listened (and I give him a huge amount of respect for that). A good friend of mine was similar. He wanted to swoop. He wanted the "rush." He got a Xfire loaded at about 1.4 and started pushing it. He was told to dial it back some. He didn't. So he spent an entire summer watching from the sidelines as his bones healed. I've read your posts before, and in the past you have expressed doubt or disbelief that someone "could be that stupid." Yet they are. I've reached the point in life that I'm no longer surprised by the stupid things I see people do, but I'll never cease to be amazed. I drive truck for a living, and volunteer as a safety officer at my local shooting range. I see amazingly stupid things on a regular basis. Right, the mayor has special authority to reverse the Supreme Court. He certainly seems to think so. Chicago (the mayor and the city council) have tried to enact a large number of "reasonable restrictions" on their citizens with regards to gun ownership. The two that come to mind are the ban on gun sales in the city (by licensed dealers) and the requirement for prospective gun owners to show proof of proficiency, but the ban on shooting ranges (no place to prove that proficiency). Both of those have gone to court and been struck down. http://cfif.org/v/index.php/commentary/42/2068-federal-court-overturns-yet-another-chicago-gun-law Not exactly an unbiased site, but the facts are there and it's the first I could find with a quick search. Are you talking overall in sports, or skydiving in particular? I don't see PED being a problem in skydiving. First off, it's far more skill than strength/endurance. 2nd (and this is actually more important) is that there isn't the money involved. The pay levels for top-level competitors, either through prize money or sponsorships, just isn't there. The sport just isn't big enough. As far as the "rest of the sporting world" goes, I'd just as soon see them try to keep it clean. I see it as being "not fair." After the steroid era in baseball in the 90s, where the hitters were very clearly using PED, and blew a lot of records clean out of the water, I lost a lot of faith in the sport. Anyone who had eyes could see that McGuire, Sosa, Giambi, Bonds and that group were 'juicing.' You just don't get that big without it. A lot of folks see it as a choice. But the problem with that, is that it then takes away the 'choice' for everyone else. If some are doing it, then the rest have to in order to keep up. I've heard that Olympic level athletes almost "have to" use PED to be competitive. Those that aren't willing to take the risks simply won't be able to make it. And most of that shit is dangerous. It has serious side effects, some short term, some longer term. Look up how many pro wrestlers from the 80s & 90s are dead. Same thing with pro football players from the 70s. Many died young from stuff that was likely a result of PED use. And if the pros are using it, then the kids who want to grow up to be a pro are going to use it. And that's the truly vulnerable population. Because even if you can justify use by the pros, knowing that kids will use that crap, most of whom are never going to make it big, well that's inexcusable. There's always going to be cheating. There's always going to be cheaters. Make the prize big enough and someone will always be willing to take the risk (both getting caught and health risks). But that doesn't mean it should be condoned. Oops. Demonstrated, not limit. It's been a while. I was always taught that the demonstrated number was a good place to put a "limit." I agree that "maintain control" is the deciding factor, and that gusts & rotors make it more... Interesting. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It's up to the pilot. The planes each have their own max crosswind component allowed (part of the certification process) Crosswind landings (presuming the pilot is reasonably skilled) look a lot scarier than they really are. Gusty conditions make it more challenging, but again, it looks a lot scarier than it really is. The wing flexing is normal, and these planes have enough mass (inertia) that they react to gusts a lot slower than we are used to, flying nylon canopies (and the wings won't collapse either). I've pushed a Cessna right up to the limits, and it wasn't that big of a deal. Proper technique and staying on top of it is vital, but it's actually worse on the ground, especially in a high wing, like a Cessna. Has that worked in other cities? Obviously nothing to the extent of Ferguson, but was video evidence believed when other evidence ignored or considered "faked"? Only issues see with body video itself is the impact of once made standard, of due to a strictly technical issue, it not working. Would the officer still be permitted to work, or would whatever issue preventing the recording or transmission/storage be required to be resolved prior? Or would this only be the case in "high risk" situations/areas? Well, there have been some studies: http://www.policefoundation.org/content/body-worn-cameras-police-use-force Most show "use of force" by the cops drops a lot, and citizen complaints against officers drops even more. I have yet to see any good arguments against it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Welcome. On jumping an AN-2, I don't think so. AFAIK, the AN-2 was never certified here in the US. Which means that any that are flying here are doing so under an "Experimental" certification. Which usually means "no jumping." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
As an interesting point to add, PBS had "American Experience, the Kennedys" (or something like that) on the other night. I didn't watch it all, but I caught the part about the Freedom Riders. Shortly after an integrated bus was firebombed and burned in Alabama, the Riders planned another trip to Montgomery. Kennedy didn't want a huge uproar about civil rights, so he tried to get both sides to back down. The Riders refused. So RFK sent a rep to Montgomery to talk to the cops, to try to prevent violence. The Montgomery cops refused to stop the segregationists from attacking the Riders. The cops refused to prevent crimes against black people. And the segregationists weren't fooling around. They planned on giving serious beatings (hospitalization, broken bones, internal injuries serious) to the Riders. And the cops were going to stand by and let this happen. And this was a little over 50 years ago. Ron asked why there weren't any riots when OJ was acquitted. Maybe it's because white people believe in the justice system. Even though they know it's not perfect, whites feel that most of the time, guilty are arrested, tried and convicted. While the innocent are not. Black people have just about the opposite experience. Whites accused of killing blacks usually were acquitted, regardless of the evidence. Blacks accused of crimes against whites were usually convicted, again regardless of the evidence. No wonder why they don't have a lot of faith in "The System." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." No, I don't. There's lots of people I don't like. But I don't feel the need to bash them and call them names "just because I can." Do you mean the carnage caused by guys thinking that the mistletoe overhead gives them the "right" to kiss a girl? Or the carnage caused by the wives of the above guys? Or the carnage caused by the thing getting swatted out of the air and across the room? Or the carnage caused by all the shit being thrown at it? C'mon, it's the USA. Given the crap that's top rated on TV, this will take off like gangbusters. Personally, I'd see what would happen if a napkin was tossed over it. Would it foul one rotor and throw it wildly out of control? Or maybe foul all the rotors and make it drop like a rock? Or maybe just screw up the airflow into the rotors and it would simply settle? Or maybe I'd just throw the table candle at it. My aim is usually pretty good. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Wow. I'm not a fan of her music, but I don't see the need to bash her like that. She's a long, long way from "ugly" by just about any measure (except jealousy). She seems to have a good management team behind her (headed by her mom, if I understand correctly), and she's not letting the fame destroy her.
