  1. Absolutely agree that, as private citizens, they can fly whatever flag they wish. But it does say a lot about them. So does this: That quote seems to be saying that they acknowledge the history behind the flag, the truth of what a lot of people are saying about it, but simply refuse to believe that their display of it means any of that. 2. Oh, hell. I'll play too. This was a bad landing. They happen. It could have been a traffic conflict (another canopy in the air) that the TI had to avoid that caused this. It could have been funky winds, a bad spot, or just "operator error." It's almost impossible to tell from that video. Was the student (passenger) hurt? This is not a carnival ride. It's skydiving. There are risks. When (if) you go, you will be required to sign a lengthy waiver (hold harmless agreement). It's a binding legal document, I suggest you actually read it. It will say "risk of injury or death" a bunch of times. Basically it means that you understand that there are risks. That there is no guarantee that it will go as planned. That "Bad Shit" might happen. And you agree to assume that risk, and not blame the DZ if something goes wrong. There is virtually nothing that you can do to avoid this. You are completely under the control of the TI. If you want to take responsibility for what happens, take the AFF course and do a solo jump. But then you won't have a TI to take care of you. It is a rare occurrence that something goes bad. The vast majority of students (passengers) have a fun and safe experience. You have to decide if the small but very real risk is worth it. 3. Nu-Uh. That's "ignore." Because he's ignoring your data in favor of his data. You know, the "more accurate" ones that he likes better. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  4. What about the Illinois rulings? Wouldn't those be a precedent of some sort? I can't find what I'm looking for with a quick search (and I'm kind of in a hurry), but wasn't Illinois' complete ban on civilian carry ruled unconstitutional? Wasn't there a court order that the state pass some sort of carry permit law, or "go constitutional carry" with no restrictions? And, of course, despite being given a year to do this, the state dragged its feet and had to ask the court for extra time. Working entirely off memory here and I'm probably missing something or getting something wrong. Any correction to this would be welcome. 5. CARRIER Specific sensitivity? ... sounds familiar. Ok, I'll bite. WTF is a "buried cellphone tower"? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  6. You have to remember that Ferguson was the cliched "Pot waiting to boil over." The killing of Brown was the "breaking point" if you will. The minority citizens of Ferguson had been treated badly for a long time. The way the crime scene was handled, the way the information was given out (including bald-faced lies), the way the protesters (and the media) were treated, the whole situation was mishandled from the beginning. But, again, that wasn't the real reason for the riots. That was just the trigger. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 8. Or ego is a good possibility too. Like the go involved with, how dare you run away from me and try and show me up. I am going to arrest you on questionable charges regarding this knife that may or may not be legal. Then, I am going to give you the ride of your life. That should teach you not to challenge me again. Well, he won't be challenging their authority again, now will he? Ego is a huge factor. Failure to "respect their authority" can be a capital offense. 9. I don't doubt that there have been bigger naked formations. But a "Record" is a combination of the actual accomplishment, pre-declaration and documentation. Look at some of the recently claimed "state records" that have been recorded since USPA started pushing them. And keep in mind, due to the differing requirements to "claim" records at different levels, the Illinois state head down record is 142, while the World Record is 138. Congrats Jeff. One more "Naked World Record" for you. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  10. I'm thinking if you are going to have a cat wandering the length of the wing, aileron trim could be useful. I'm thinking that the wing covering is translucent. You could see the shadow of the cat on the underside of the wing. Why didn't the pilot see that during preflight? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 11. From the description, it isn't unclaimed or abandoned. The guy who owns it doesn't want to move it at the moment. The hull is probably worth several hundred dollars for the scrap metal alone. If it were to "disappear" the cops would probably get involved. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 12. Unfortunately (or not) we have that pesky little thing called "Freedom of Speech." While I fully agree that hatred is wrong and stupid, people have the right to be those things. Certain "speech" is illegal in Germany. Some may agree with that (that's their right). I don't. Freedom of Speech includes the right to be an asshole. A hateful, prejudiced, asshole. Because at some point in time, someone may decide that something I consider important is no longer "acceptable." And the freedom to speak about it, no matter how unpopular, is important. Taking the flag off the state capitol is a very, very good thing. It's tantamount to state sponsorship of hatred and bigotry, despite what the "historical advocates" say. 13. Yet another answer of "Check your brake line length," I have a 170 Sabre2, and it had brake lines that were too short. The brake lines were taut and the back of the canopy was deflected down slightly even with the toggles at the rings. Front riser turns would go about 90 degrees and start to buck and flutter. Letting them out a lot, to the point that I have about a foot of backwards "bow" when all the way up made a huge difference. If you don't know how, ask your local rigger. It's a reasonably simple task that should only take a few minutes. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 14. That's funny. Wisconsin law specifically prohibits employers from prohibiting firearms in privately owned vehicles, although it does specify "locked in the vehicle." https://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/state-gun-laws/wisconsin/ You have to scroll down to "carrying" and click on the "more" to open up the part I quoted. 15. I've noticed that your posts have become more "illiterate" of late. Because it was a recent and sudden change, and the mistakes are clearly of the "Damn you Autocorrect!" type, I guessed that it was a platform issue. But other folks on here have a long, long history of word misuse, horrendous grammar, even nonsensical phrasing. I look at their posts and wonder what they are smoking. Others will launch into vitriolic, profanity laced diatribes at the slightest hint of a pejorative. One minor insult towards them results in their "standing up for themselves" with a vicious PA. And subsequent banning. Good riddance. I understand typos. And I'm not so straightlaced that I'm offended by the word "fuck". But I look at the care with which posts are constructed. I look at the choice in language, grammar and spelling. And if they can't take a minute to look it over for obvious mistakes, if they only know three adjectives (fuck, shit and damned), then I tend to skim over what they have to say. If even that much. Of course, there are a few on here who post with impeccable grammar, punctuation and spelling. Yet the majority of their posts are "I know you are but what am I?" bickering. Or splitting hairs to near nothing. Or twisting and manipulating what others say, "moving goalposts" during debate, that sort of stupid "win at all costs" debate technique that has little to do with an actual discussion of the situation. I pay little or no attention to them also. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  16. Sounds good to me. After the Sandy Hook shooting, one thing that was being advocated was background checks for all purchases (including private party). The NRA was invited to the discussion. One thing they asked was why the current laws regarding background checks weren't being enforced. As in, why aren't any people who lie about their past being prosecuted. 44 prosecutions out of 72000 (Seventy two thousand) denials. VP Biden said "We don't have time for that." Before adding new laws or expanding the ones in place, how about enforcing them? How about prosecuting the people that violate them? http://dailycaller.com/2013/01/18/biden-to-nra-we-dont-have-the-time-to-prosecute-people-who-lie-on-background-checks/ "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 17. Yes, especially in Nigeria. http://www.eyesonnigeria.org/EON_Extractives.html The article is more about oil production done poorly than oil production itself. As Kallend has rightly pointed out, water can be as hazardous as oil, if done incorrectly. Well, the mineral extraction industry as a whole has a long, long history of making huge messes and simply leaving them. To the detriment of the people who live there. Strip mining of coal in the Appalachian region, oil in Africa & South America, gold mines across the western US. The ratio of "production done poorly" that leaves behind big environmental damage vs "production done properly" that doesn't is pretty big. Worker safety is a very similar situation. 18. In order: No. Lower. A lot lower. A fully loaded jump plane will descend very quickly with no power. 1000'. Really. I've thought about this one a lot and discussed it quite a bit too. With both jumpers and pilots (and those who are both). Hand on the reserve handle going out the door, arch and pull. Haven't done it for real with the reserve, but "Instant H&Ps" under my main lose very little altitude - canopy opens before fully off 'the hill'. HOWEVER...That is presuming that the pilot is ok with it, or the airplane has suffered a failure that's bad enough to make exiting necessary. If the pilot says "EVERYONE SIT WHERE YOU ARE AND DON"T MOVE AROUND!!!" then I'm doing just that. The difference between maintaining control and losing it can be a very fine line under emergency situations. I'd hate to have a "handleable" (if that's a real word) emergency, just to see it screwed up by jumpers moving around and shifting the CG (see below). You are screwed. How much fun do we have getting belts on while loading the plane on the ground? How much more "fun" will it be under duress? We (generic "we") always stow the belts away under the floor mats to keep them from flopping/tangling. How hard does that make them to find if/when we need them? Seat belts also keep the jumpers in place to prevent sudden CG shifts. Next time you are in a 182, watch how much control input the pilot has to make as a tandem pair moves around to hook up and get ready to go. There's a reason long time jumpers will let the pilot know when they are going to move around in a 182. I fully agree. I really like those sorts of questions which raise more questions as the answers start to come in. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 20. Somewhere in Stephen King's "Dark Tower" books, the gunslinger, Roland, describes them with something like: "That which is believed to be true by those who think very little or not at all." 21. Living in the US in the 80's when the state moved the drinking age from 18 to 19 then 21 over a few years, I was legal drinking age (twice). Was odd to be able to go to bars and purchase alcohol for a near a year, then be underage again. Had one friend who was legal drinking age for just one day. Was always curious why a 20yr old having a beer or (God forbid) seeing a bare breast in the media/advertising would harm society. Really? I was "grandfathered" in. When they passed the laws around here, anyone who was legal age (18) continued to be legal. There was simply a "cutoff date" after which the new age limit would apply (born after a certain date). The people who were really pissed were the ones who missed the cutoff date by a couple days. And the one of the biggest arguments was the "bloody border" situation. For example, Wisconsin was 18 and Illinois was 21. So all the 18 year olds would drive up to Wisconsin, get drunk and kill themselves (and others) driving home. 22. From the article: So the desire for gun rights is based on ignorance? The 'funny' part about that is that for most anti-gun folks, 'reasonable restraints' include outright bans on guns that have certain cosmetic features. They also prey on the ignorance of many about the difference between select fire (full auto capable) and semi auto. I'm certainly in favor of keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, but I have yet to see any proposal which would do that. Every proposal so far has been targeted at keeping the guns out of the hands of the law abiding. Was this guy a convicted criminal? Was he demonstrably mentally ill? 23. You sure about that? Here in WI, under 21 is unable to purchase through a FFL, purchase ammuntion, or obtain a carry permit. But possession (pistol or ammo) is perfectly legal. To include open carry. And private party purchases are legal too. Louisiana seems to be the same: http://smartgunlaws.org/minimum-age-to-purchase-or-possess-firearms-in-louisiana/ "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 25. I'll root for the undertaker. He's going to be the winner no matter what. The US is still there and probably will be for the foreseeable future. Kind of like what Bush #1 and his SecDef, Darth Cheney talked about after Iraq #1. There's no way out that doesn't end up with Afghanistan going back to what it was in the 90s after the Soviets left. Total anarchy. Tribal warfare with modern weapons. The Minister of Defense attacking the Minister of the Interior and the Foreign Minister in their neighborhoods in Kabul, using tanks and artillery. That is what got the Taliban created and in power in the first place. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
