2 Gunmen killed outside Muhammad cartoon drawing contest event
wolfriverjoe replied to Driver1's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, what she did isn't incitement to riot, as I understand it. As was pointed out above, MB's dad in Ferguson saying "Burn the bitch down" would be. Making statements that get the crowd on your side all worked up is "incitement." What happened here is more "fighting speech." Making statements that are so inflammatory and insulting that a physical assault from the subject of the comments is a reasonable response. Which is bullshit. "Fighting Speech" is still protected speech. If someone is so incensed and inflamed that they are unable to restrain themselves from attacking someone who angers them, then they should go back to kindergarten where little kids learn those things. Or they should be put into a psych ward because it's clear that they are a danger to society. And way back, someone (Professor Kallend maybe?) asked if people who are making statements so offensive that they need protection have to pay for that protection. I can't say for sure, but I think the answer is "No." At least in Wisconsin. The KKK has had rallies in Madison a few times over the years. It went to court a couple times, but the end result was that the KKK had to be issued permits, as long as proper procedures were followed. I'm pretty sure that they had to pay for the porta-potties, and for standard level security from the local cops/sheriff's office. Of course, the "other side" had to counter-protest, and they had to get permits and all that stuff for it. There ended up being a fence between the two groups to make sure they stayed separate. But I'm pretty sure that the KKK didn't have to pay extra for the extra security. The whole "She shouldn't-a-oughta done that" annoys me. Sure, she deliberately held an event that is blatantly offensive to Muslims. But the "offense" Muslims are taking is a blatant attack on free speech. The Muslims feel that their "offense" is more important than freedom of expression. And I'm pretty offended by that. Any time anyone says "If you say or do that, I'll punch you in the nose!!", I'm more inclined to say or do that particular thing. Just to keep the bullies on notice that I'm not going to be intimidated by them. That I'm not willing to give up my freedoms to kowtow to their threats. I'm kind of surprised that you would take any different view than that, Quade. As a writer, you should be more interested in preserving and maintaining freedom of speech than most, I would think. Ummm... Because she isn't inciting a riot? She isn't standing at a mike saying "Go out and... (kill Muslims, burn Mosques, loot Kwik-E-Marts, ect)", which would be directing people to commit violent acts. That is "incitement." She is provoking a response by being deliberately offensive. Exercising her 1st A right to be a douche. She's deliberately "pushing buttons" to show people that Muslims are easily offended and react violently when insulted. No different than if I desecrated a flag and someone reacted by, say, trying to steal the flag. Although, in that case, I would be a douche for desecrating the flag, the person who stole the flag (or assaulted me if Ron happened to be there ) would be the one in the wrong. And yes, I know Apu isn't Muslim. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
Just out of curiosity, is there any sort of "polygamists rights" group out there? I know some of the extreme Mormon sects (not recognized by the main church) practice it, and some Muslims do too. But is there any sort of 'push' to legalize it? I'm not aware of any. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Jerry and Andy both mentioned it, but no. The majority isn't allowed to deny a minority it's rights via the ballot box. Period. We've been through all that. If that were true, Jim Crow would still exist across the south. Quite possibly, slavery would still exist in a few states, too. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Maybe, maybe not. Conditions in Germany during the depression were perfect for the rise of a dictator of some sort. If it hadn't been Hitler, it probably would have been someone else (Goebbels, Strasser, Himmler or Goering are prime candidates). Edit to add: Ah, Andy beat me to it. Because they aren't adults? Regardless of what comes out of gay marriage (monogamy) and polygamy (gay, straight, or "mixed"), I can't see the laws on age of consent for marriage (or anything else) changing much. We "protect" kids (juveniles, teens, whatever) from their own bad decisions by not letting them make serious ones. The "age of maturity" is pretty arbitrary, and as a 'one size fits all' is not the best, but it's what we have and works pretty well most of the time. Science has shown that the brain doesn't fully mature until the mid-twenties for most people. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." As for the severity of the charges, and they will come no doubt. There still are legal standards to be met, even though they are cops, they still get due process........... Yup. Cops get "due process." Sometimes it's even "fair." Sometimes, not so much "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." You are getting a bit of crap over what seems to be an honest question, so here is a serious answer: Yes. Lots of people did. I was part of a fairly big group of friends who all went out together. The DZ was fairly small, and the only way a group that size could work was static line. It was also about 2/3 the cost. It happened that I couldn't be part of the group the day they did it due to a work conflict, but I went the next weekend on my own (and took the class with another from the same group). We couldn't jump that day (Saturday) due to high winds, but I went back the next day and jumped. I ended up in the plane with 2 other students from the original group that had come back to do repeat S/L jumps. I landed after that first jump and said: "I gotta do that again. So I did. The quote below applies to me too. In the years that we have done the group, only 2 of us have gone on and gotten our licenses and become "real" skydivers. One was in the plane with me on that first jump. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

What exactly do you mean by "video log"? Lots of places have security cameras. I've been to offices where the cameras cover just about everything "open". That is, the entire cube farm. Not bathrooms, not offices with doors, but all the hallways, conference rooms, breakrooms, ect. Most places archive that footage. Access to that archived footage can be anything from wide open to "you need a warrant." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Well, at least some parents are willing to try to keep their kids on the right path. I don't know what's worse. Having your mom beat the crap out of you in front of all your friends, or having the video go viral. http://coed.com/2015/04/27/baltimore-riots-mom-slap-video-freddy-gray-protests-looting/ "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." The arbiter of what is "appropriate" and what is "not appropriate" are... The doctor and the patient. Period. Once the state or the church or anyone else insists that "this question" or "that question" be asked, or that any other tests/procedures (like an ultrasound) be performed, or that any information be given (like watching a video of an abortion, or the stupid and inaccurate stuff some states require); then it is no longer solely between the doctor and the patient. IIRC, doctor/patient confidentiality is up with lawyer/client, priest/penitent and husband/wife. For good reason. And I agree with Professor Kallend that it's highly unlikely that any clinic would agree to perform an abortion (or just about any other procedure) on a patient "on demand", without some sort of consult. Like any medical procedure, the doctor does have an obligation to explain the procedure and possible side-effects etc. I agree that the decision in the end should be solely made by the woman. I don't agree that a woman should just be able to walk into a clinic and demand an abortion without any questions asked. That would simply be bad health care. I think this sums up what I was trying to say, better than I did. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." And if you can't see the hypocrisy then you can't see the hypocrisy. ***Because your statement was hypocritical. Once again, you state that something is disrespectful - but it's OK when you do it because it's hard to do it right. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Right. That's what the "cannot" part of my post implied. I've ground crewed demos that involved smaller flags. We made every practical effort to treat the flag properly, but it did end up touching the ground on landing. There was no way to prevent it without endangering the jumper. A piece of cloth isn't worth risking injury over. But I'm not the one saying out of one side of my mouth that I couldn't restrain myself if I saw someone treating the flag with disrespect, while saying out of the other side of my mouth that I went and hid because I was laying the flag on the ground to pack it, after doing a patriotic demo jump. Well, at least it's nice of you to admit that your side of the argument lacks common sense. You are right that there is a difference. One side is deliberately making a statement by desecrating the flag. Like it or hate it, it's an exercise in free speech. The other side is a group of people who claim to "love" the flag, do a demo jump that is supposed to be "patriotic", and then go and hide because they are unwilling or unable to take necessary steps to treat the flag properly. At least the first group is honest about their actions. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

I think the rote quote is absolutely counter to the pro-choice movement's intent. It should be the adult woman's decision ONLY. It's not partly the doctor's decision at all. He just executes the procedure. Period - final decision rests with the woman if we want to be philosophically pure. Who are you to tell the potential mother/or not who she is allowed to get advise from? Why do you hate choice? (She can include anybody she chooses to get advise from - I think if it's an adult woman - then the father and the doctor are typically good choices. but neither is remotely the final decision). You make some very valid points, and in a very reasonable and rational manner. I've noticed you've been doing that a lot lately. Are you feeling ok? Seriously, I think that a doctor's opinion is important to have for any planned medical procedure. Any procedure that I would have done would be in consultation with a doctor that I trust. I would seek his (or her, my last doctor was a woman) opinion and advice on the appropriateness, risk level, expectations of results (and probably a few other things that I can't think of right now) before making a decision whether or not to proceed with the procedure. I would expect my doctor to give professional and impartial advice. If I felt I wasn't getting that, I'd seek a different doctor (not talking about "doctor shopping" to find the opinion that I want to hear, just making sure I felt I was getting sound advice). I would think a woman seeking an abortion should do the same. There may be sound physical/medical reasons that she shouldn't have the abortion. Reasons that the doctor would know, that she might not (I don't know of any, but I'm not a doctor). But I see your point, and do largely agree with it. Per capita cost of gun violence, by state
wolfriverjoe replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
It already is. 11% excise tax on all ammunition. Guns are also taxed, 10% for pistols, 11% for long guns. That's over and above the normal sales tax, which is also levied. So let me get this straight... A person can pray for God to mind control another person's actions? Well, I guess they can ask. Sure. And when all goes well and the patient recovers, it's all because "God Answered My Prayers." When it goes bad and the patient dies or suffers serious complications, then it's because that unbelieving doctor wasn't open to the "Grace of God" C'mon, this is basic self deception/religion. Kind of a shame that the cops and prosecutor in the case can't and/or won't be held responsible. Maybe give them 27 years. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

No. First off, there's not a lot of evidence that waiting periods have much, if any effect. People who are seriously pissed either wait it out, find a different way to get a gun quicker or use something else. Second off, the decision to have an abortion is private. That was the whole point of Roe v Wade. It should be a decision between a woman and the doctor. NOBODY ELSE. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Who in the world cites JW or any of those far-right-wing "tabloid" sites as actual 'news'? And show me any of their (JW, WMD, WesternJournalism, ect) stories that have been accurate. I'm talking about stories about FEMA camps, Obama impeachment, Ebola or "The Scary Brown People Are Coming FOR YOU!!!!!" ("scary brown people" can be Muslim terrorists, Mexican or Central American Illegals, blacks in the inner cities, ect) They make up the most ridiculous crap to feed the fears of the simple minded. As I mentioned before, they are the on-line versions of the "Weekly World News", minus the Bat-Boy (because he's copyright protected). Don't wear it around your neck, period. Jumping, not jumping, whatever. Having something around your neck that will kill you before it breaks is just plain stupid. And dangerous. Well, don't point a gun at the cops. When they tell you to drop it, it's best to do so. Most "Defensive Gun" or "Concealed Carry" classes cover this. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Pfft. The Turks refuse to admit it was a genocide because that would "contaminate" the memory of the formation of Turkey as a nation composed (mostly) of Turks, instead of a huge empire consisting of a wide variety of ethnic groups. The Turks like to keep claiming that "there were a lot of displaced people in the aftermath of WW1, and a lot of them died. Of course, the Armenians were all displaced by the Turks, and mostly killed by them too. How different is it from the "American Exceptionalism" that so many "Flag Wavers" like to claim? And Obama will not stand by his campaign promise to call it a "genocide" because we need Turkey way, way too much. Period. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
