  1. At our dz the tandem instructors choose who they want to shoot video of them. I have about 4 camera flyers that I use when I do tandems. I have been jumping with most of these people for more than 10 years so I am very comfortable with them. If a new camera person wanted to shoot video for me I would want to get familiar with their flying and video ability first hand before I would ask them to shoot a paying video. To do this I would make some solo jumps with them if I had not already, then I would ask that they lurk me on some tandems that do not want video. If they can get good video without scaring me...well cool. Skydive Radio
  2. Its cool, but how do you view a users full profile now? That option is not on the post any more that i can see. Skydive Radio
  3. Not the exact same features. The lanc port alone is enough reason to go with a Sony. Also, the fact that Sony has become the standard in the skydiving industry means that there are more products available to support Sony. Like a D-box and the cameye2 which both rock by the way. Also, some other brands have issues with wide angel lense's which you will want for skydiving. There are reasons almost everyone on the dz's use Sony. The difference in price is not that much anyway. You are probably talking about less then 15% difference for similar features on a Sony vs. some other brand like JVC, RCA or Panasonic. In short, if you want a real skydiving video camera...S O N Y is the best choice. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  4. Whats the difference between the two? -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  5. Don't know if this is the same thing you guys are talking about, but here is a pic of how I mounted my cameye2 on my Optik. I drilled a hole and stuck the cameye2 through it from the inside. On the outside it only sticks out about 1/16 of an inch. Works great. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  6. Glad to hear some of the Couchfreaks will be attending. Hope all goes well with your car. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  7. The Lincoln Sport Parachute Club will be hosting a Skyvan boogie June 7, 8 and 9 at the Coucil Bluffs Airport in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This is right across the river from Omaha, NE. Anyone going to be in the area? -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  8. 33 feet of water is equal to one entire atmosphere of pressure. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  9. What about the PC-110? -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  10. My TRV-30 was just under $1700. Mrhixxx, who also posts here, bought his PC-110 for just under $1100. I am sure that you can find a TRV-30 for less then $1700, but I doubt you will beat the $1100 price that Mrhixxx paid for his. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  11. Here is a copy of a post that went around about this subject a few months ago. Hope this helps. Well I finally just went to Sony's website and got the info I was looking for. For those of you who are interested here are the differences between the PC-110 and the TRV-30: PC-110 - Sidemount configuration TRV-30 - Topmount configuration PC-110 - 1.4" 1070K Image Sensor TRV-30 - 1.4" 1550K Image Sensor PC-110 - 520 Lines of horizontal resolution TRV-30 - 530 Lines of horizontal resolution PC-110 - 1152 x 864 Still image resolution TRV-30 - 1360 x 1020 Still image resolution PC-110 - 2.5" LCD screen TRV-30 - 3.5" LCD screen PC-110 - Just over 1.25 lbs TRV-30 - Just under 1.5 lbs And the TRV-30 has 14 Bit DXP (whatever that means) Other then that the cameras offer all the same features. They both have the same editing features and special effects features. Not sure about battery times but I would suspect that the PC-110 has longer battery time because of its smaller LCD screen. Price wise the PC-110 is about $500 cheaper...at least in the case of my purchase vs. my friends purchase. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  12. Are you back in town? Did you say night jumps? Am I missing something? -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  13. You can just click and drag the video or mp3 file you want right into the Premier window. It will then show up in the bin and from there you can drag it into the timeline. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  14. I am having a hard time grasping this. The parallax issue does reduce at further distances. But how does sighting your camera farther away reduce parallax at close distance? I don't think it does. If I sight my top mount in at 50 feet it will be very close to the same as if I sight it in at 100 feet. However, If I move to within a few feet of a subject and use that same sighting point, I am still going to be shooting high. I simply use my own judgement to change where I point my sight as I get closer to my target. If I am right in their face I am aiming my sight slightly low to overcome the parallax angle. If I'm wrong, please explain it to me because I would love to find a way to get my sight to be dead center at all distances, but short of mounting the camera inside my eyesocket, I just don't see how it is possible. . -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  15. Once again, a skydiving fasion trend comes in one step ahead of safety and practicality. I'm not trying to rip on you, I just don't want to see you loose your new camera or worse yet, get hurt. Good luck to you. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  16. Well it doesn't look quite as scary as I thought it would. I still think it is way wide for a side mount though. You will be getting the occational riser strike for sure with that baby. Is there a reason you don't want to top mount it? -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  17. I have a trv-30 in a dbox topmounted on an optik. The optik comes with a chincup so I don't really know how it would be without it but I have several jumps on an nvertigo with a pc-1 on the side with no chin cup and never had any problems. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  18. Don't know much about that model, but if you can afford to go mini DV you will not regret it. The cameras are smaller then high 8 cameras and the picture quality is much better as well. Plus, if you want to do some editing on the computer you will have digital video to work with. If you use high 8 or VHS-C, you will have to convert your analog signal to digital before you can edit. You can get into a new Sony mini DV camera for around $1000. When you do buy, make sure to go with Sony if you are looking for a skydiving camera. Sony has some features, like lanc ports that other brands do not have. Most of the camera accsories for skydiving support Sony. I have a Sony TRV-30 mini DV camera and love it. It is a top mount camera. If you are looking for a side mount you might want to check out the Sony PC-110. Hope this helps. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  19. I would be interested to see a pic of it set up on your helmet. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  20. Specs on that camera say that it is 3 and 7/16 inches wide. Why are you going to side mount it? By the time you build your box that thing is going to be at least 4 to 5 inches off your helmet. Sounds super scary. You might want to top mount that camera. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  21. I-Link is the 1394 firewire port which you will use to transfer video to the computer or to another dv camera. Lanc is what you would use for a cameye2 which is handy for more reasons then just identifing if the camera is recording. With cameye2 you can also turn your power on and off, start and stop recording and see if you are getting low on battery or tape all with one button which can easily be flush mounted on any helmet. It is a super handy thing and after having one it would just totally suck to jump a camera without it. Also, did you check to see if you can add a wide angle lense like the above poster asked? If not you may really want to consider returning the camera and going with a Sony. Not being able to use a cameye2 sucks, but not being able to use a wideangle lense would in my opinion make that camera totally useless for skydiving. Don't want to rain on your parade or anything, but theres real reasons why just about everyone you see at the dz uses Sony's. As for cost, you can get into a Sony PC-110 for not much more then you spent on yours. MrHixxx could give you information on where to get a good deal on that camera if the place you bought yours at will take it back. I use a topmounted TRV-30 myself, but you get into a little more $$$ going that route. Hope all works out for you. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  22. Looks kinda big for a d-box. Maybe the picture is deciving. If it will not work with a d-box I have a friend who built his own box out of aluminum that works very well. I can put you in touch if you need. By the way, does the camera have a lanc port? -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  23. I've jumped at Longmont several times over the past 7 or 8 years and have always had a good time. I also went there to get a rating recently. However, I was able to stop by Brush on the way home (Nebraska) from Colorado last summer and the atmosphere there seemed really great. The owner took time out to show my wife and I around even though we were not able to make a jump that day due to weather. He was a super nice guy and seemed eager to please the skydivers. I will probably go to Brush to jump next time I am in CO. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  24. I have a standard Kenko .42 and it looks fine to me but I have not seen the other one so I can't really compare. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
  25. I was not suggesting that he cut off the handstrap. I am reffering to the plastic cover that goes over the ports. If you have a cam-eye 2 you have to either drill a hole in it over the lanc port or cut it off so that you have access to all your ports. I experimented with removing the cover and leaving it hanging inside the d-box, but decided against it because it looked like in time it would wear out the plastic keeper anyway. -Dave "Gas...Undercarriage...Mixture...Prop...Beer"
