  1. Nice try. But the guys who are getting naughty PMs from me don't type one-handed and tell. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  2. Yep. Power. Forcing will. Also... A long way away from your initial post about provocative dress in risky area! His initial post was about "...if a woman is dressed like a slut, leads a man on... goes back to his house, then says no to sex right at the last moment..... she must shoulder some of the blame for what happens next." It got taken off track later on, but the original post was clearly about "date rape." rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  4. Star Trek fan, eh? If supplying the needs of the few does not infringe on the rights of the many, what's the point of withholding except for pure meanness? Edited to add: "Democracy: Three wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner." rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  5. The temptation to hijack this thread and make it about a little boy named Jeffie and the butt plug he got for Christmas is almost overwhelming. I think I'll just stay out of this one. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  6. Further bowing and scraping is now necessary. We're going to give him a complex. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  8. The disparity is a whole lot more annoying when you put it in list form. How can we, as a country, be so unenlightened? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  9. Still too painful to talk about. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  11. It exists. But sometimes you have no choice but to love someone from a distance. That doesn't mean that when the shit hits the fan, you can ignore it, but it does mean that most of the rest of the time, you need to stay far away for your own mental and/or physical safety. There are people in this world with whom I stay out of contact deliberately, but if there were something I could do for them in a crisis, I would. I still love those people and miss them, but being around them for even a little while isn't good for me, so I stay away. Sometimes, that's all you can do. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  12. Gah! Y'know, I read very fast. On a rainy day when I'm just lolling around in bed drinking tea, I can get through five or six normal science fiction novels. Non-fiction takes a little longer, but not much. It took me two weeks to get through Atlas Shrugged. Two weeks. Lo these many years later, it remains the most poorly written, deadly boring book I have ever read. I don't think much of Rand's philosophy either. I worked for an attorney who knew her. He said she was as shitty a human being as she was a writer. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  14. The problem here is that you're trying to separate (correctly) the two issues that Ian has tried to merge (incorrectly). He's having a hard time with the idea that one person's behavior doesn't in any way justify the behavior of another. We just had this discussion in another thread about Matthew Shepard. Different fact pattern, but the argument is supposed to be "if you put yourself in a dangerous situation, you get what's coming to you." The argument didn't work re Matthew Shepard, and it doesn't work with a rape victim. Given that his original premise didn't have anything to do with walking around on the bad side of town, but simply with being a dick tease, all the arguments about putting oneself in harm's way (with strangers) don't even have a place here. The real answer to the question is, "don't go home with Ian." rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  15. Yeah I guess you have to be raped for it to be a valid topic Par for the course, your comment doesn't make a bit of sense. It made perfect sense to me. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  16. A lot. Indeed. A lot. If you know anything about federal tax law, you would understand that the gift tax laws and the death tax laws are written to favor spouses. There are no legal documents that'll get you around those laws. Currently the exemptions are pretty large, but everything may change five years from now. And there are presumptions in the law that apply to spouses that do not apply to couples of either sex who are living together. I did a quick google and came up with this: "As of 1990, 6 million to 14 million children in the United States were living with a gay or lesbian parent." In a heterosexual relationship, it is presumed that upon the death of one parent, the child will remain with the remaining biological parent. In the case of a homosexual couple, this is not the case. Even with a written direction from the deceased custodial parent, the non-custodial parent has no legal claim to the child that would trump the claim of a blood relative. It might all turn out okay, depending on the judge assigned to the case, but there are no guarantees. There are so many rights that we simply assume for ourselves, because we've always had them. Those without those rights have a different perspective. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  21. When I was in college, a girl I knew went to one of the frat houses one night. They got her drunk and then they trained her. She was too toasted to do anything but lay there, and afterward, she felt as if it were her fault anyway, so she never pressed charges against them. She ended up leaving school. There are a lot of men in this world who take "no protest" to be "yes," and they don't understand the myriad motivations that underlie a woman's silence. It doesn't matter if a woman "asks for it," rape is rape. Don't do it. rl (There are exceptions to this that relate to an ongoing relationship and the assumptions we make while in one, but they have nothing to do with this thread. But even in a relationship where "yes" is implied, "no" still means "don't do it.") If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
