Is it legal to ask for a criminal background check when renting?
NovaTTT replied to aykay's topic in The Bonfire
But make sure to yell "SHOW ME YOUR TITTIES! SHOW ME YOUR TITTIES!" They'll ask you why - tell them you like to look at titties when you're screwing someone. Jumped a D-6 Russian paratrooper rig with a drogue
NovaTTT replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Great story - and photos. Sounds like a lot of fun. Cheers! "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73 -
Why are you waiting to pack the main? Put that thing in there and take some more photos - something a bit further back so we can see the entire rig. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

is there an easy way to get a siphon started?
NovaTTT replied to TrophyHusband's topic in The Bonfire
You can buy a small hand pump at the hardware store. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73 -
I tend to agree with the fist, but I don't spend enough time auctioning for it to matter. Still, A quantum is defined as: the smallest discrete quantity of some property that a system can possess. So I guess that's an interesting use of the word. Isn't modicum something to do with proper behaviour? Another example of how you relay experiences so well, Jim. I can just picture Mark giving you the appraising eye - then busting up. Thanks for sharing the anecdote. Nova "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

Sorry for your troubles. Happy for you that you got to enjoy jumping with your canine companion. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

Mark was much smarter and more intelligent than the Peanut Gallery gave him credit for. It was his up-front way, his brash honesty that caused some to have issues with him. It's like Jack Nicholson in that movie: You can't handle the truth! Unfortunately, the power was not in his hands and he paid for his honesty. I'm not saying he was a saint, but he wasn't just standing up for himself. I hope he's soaring somewhere, flying glorious banners and flag-jumping into stadiums filled with angels. Wait for them to violate and then write them a ticket. Try the back of Parachutist magazine - the USPA monthly magazine. You'll get it if you're a member. Blue Skies magazine might list as well - you can find them online. Which is the best? That's subject to opinion, but ask around your DZ. Find one in your area and go for it. So sorry to hear this. Go easy, Slyde. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

Tony, you'll have a hard time getting hired by someone who knows you are better suited for their job than they are! The "overqualified" rationale, in my experience, really is a preservative measure - don't bring somebody on who will replace oneself! Maybe you should downplay your skills/experience and swoop their slot once you're onboard. Good luck with the jobhunt! Short answer: Talk to your instructors. Long answer: Talk to your instructors because they will be able to review with you your landing pattern, tasks and goals. They will know your skills and needs, current weather conditions and will be the ones talking you down if you are on radio. If you're not on radio and are unsure of your ability to judge your landings, you can ask to have radio assistance. The good news is that it doesn't typically require a lot of thought to land well - no deep thinking. It requires planning, awareness and good timing. You'll learn the visual cues in time. Until then, use your best resources - your instructors. Sorry about the ankle. Good luck. The best skydiving movie scenes, IMO, are found in The Gypsy Moths. Pretty radical stuff, such as the 5x canopy transfer. It's worth watching. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

+1 A very good parachute. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

Yes, there are many ways to pack and bag. In my experience, the psycho gives the best bagging method - it's very easy to control the roll. Packing is like religion, as you suggested. It takes patience, perseverence and plenty time on the knees. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

I typically PRO pack, Gabor, but with very new or slippery parachutes, I find it much, much easier to control the pack with the pyscho. It's easier to control the roll than the s-fold because the s-fold tends to/wants to squirt away. The roll allows one to maintain inward pressure on the material and keep it right there. As far as openings, I find the PRO pack opens more consistently on-heading - that is, with less searching - but I have never had a psycho opening that wasn't smooth and easy. How many psycho jumps, you might want to know? Much fewer than PRO's, I admit, but I've jumped ~300 psycho packjobs. Aircraft drag chutes? I'm not an airframe mechanic so I don't worry about them! Nova "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

Serious question? You've not pyscho packed? The parachute is flaked like a PRO pack but the tail isn't rolled after bringing it up. The psycho overview: Turn the parachute around and place it nose-up on the floor. Pull the tail-ends across and purge the air. Fold in the sides and roll that sucker up. Bag it and rotate it back to the 'normal' position for stowing lines. Sound like a PRO pack? If you watch the video you will see how it works. Does anyone have some unwanted or extra male Capewell components? I could use two newer ones, not the old-school type. PM or post - thanks! Nova "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

I'm being looked at as a madman because that is so effing funny I've cackled aloud and the wife thinks I've lost it! "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

You're right, there. He cut the short cable at the pud and left the excess outside the riser channel, presumably so he could pull that to effect a cutaway if the hook-knife didn't work. See 2:37 to see the yellow cable extending from the housing. The excess cable is clearly visible throughout the "malfunction". Again - this was not a good idea. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73
-
It looks like it. The abundance of camera work, the speed with which this guy whips out the hook-knife instead of trying to manually release the riser, the higher deployment altitude, the way he's hanging onto the left riser to control the cutaway. Cool video but it seems scripted. I wouldn't call it a good idea, though. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

I don't know you, Quinton, but I know it's a hard decision. Skydiving isn't just about being in the sky. Good luck - and keep your head down and your left arm straight! Blue skies. It was Frankie, and I believe that was in 2000. It was a moment like the Olympics, where the outcome is measured in 100ths of a second. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73
