Thank god we still have young men that wish to enlist. I just retired myself after serving (enlisted) for 23 years. The absolute best years of my life!..... Best wishes to your son! P.S. He can still get his degree and stay enlisted. Being a ZERO isn't everything.......

As far as injury, sure anything from bleeding and inflammation/soft tissue damage can occur. Ear blocks are more common than sinus blocks. It's just that the level of pain from a sinus block will make you want to scream!... A web search for "barotrauma" will come up with tons of literature on the subject.... [Edit to add: Just because you've jumped before with a cold and nothing happened, DOES NOT mean it will always work like that. Your next jump might send you to the doc with ear/sinus damage. Recovery time can be quite lengthy.] Buck

Ever wondered why some are so "cheap"? Cheap sunglasses offer zero/no UV protection versus the more expensive brands. Sunglasses trick your eyes into thinking it's darker, then your pupils dialate. Bad UV rays storm into and damage your retina. Do some research, you'll see. Ask an optometrist....

That my friend is what's called a "frontal sinus block." It can have devastating affect, up to an including not being able to see due to intense pain..... Guess I cue in on these types of problems since that is part of my career.......

D, Scenario: You jump, perforate an eardrum (easy to do) or rupture a sinus cavity (easy to do). You will be OUT of jumping for a longgggg time. And you'd miss out on all the FUN JUMPS this summer...... Additionally, risk of hearing loss plus inner ear long term balance problems. Me no lie. Better to miss an upcoming event than miss several months of jumping........ Buck [Edit to add: Even a hop n pop can screw you up. Pressure change is greatest from 5,000 to ground.]

Most of the people who reported catching the highly contagious Norwalk-like virus are Hawaii residents who stayed in Boyd Gaming Corp. hotels in downtown Las Vegas, officials said. Clark County Health District spokesman Dave Tonelli said the good news is that there seems to be a decrease in the number of new cases, down to 74 for the week of March 5-12.

Clean ears have nothing, repeat nothing to do with "clearing" your middle ear. You possibly had some congestion and/or mucus in your eustachian tube. The reason you can clear when you point that ear up is, you are stretching the eustachian tube allowing equalization. If it's not getting any better, go see your doctor. And yes, you can have an ear infection and not know........ Hope you get it worked out. And BTW to other peeps, if you have congestion and/or a cold, DO NOT pinch your nose and blow. All your doing then is forcing mucus w/ bacteria back up into your middle ear, and possibly helping an infection begin..... Advice from your friendly NASA physiologist......... Buck

Couple things: 1. Medication side-effects at sea level can have entirely different reaction on a person at altitude. 2. The individual better consult with their JUMP PILOT prior to boarding. I'd think they would have an entirely different viewpoint on the matter!..........like don't screw with their ticket...
