Likewise, the Wheel series didn't catch me. Read the first one, figured it had a big following so I should try it out. Didn't like it much, too predictable, standard cookie-cutter characters, too long winded. I like my sci-fi/fantasy to be good prose regardless of genre. Check out "Small Wonders" by Barbara Kingsolver for some great short stories with sci-fi twists. Yup, love most of his stuff. I've read most of the Seventh Son/Alvin the Maker series, love it too. The Mars series by Kim Stanley Robinson is a good read, although the first couple are better than the last. The books are Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars, and I think Children of Mars. Great thread. I'll be looking up a few of these suggestions!

4 years of jishin ryu jiu-jitsu, got to my green 2 (middle rank) before the dojo closed and our sensei moved. I'd love to get back into it, but there still isn't a nearby dojo. I've thought about taking up a different discipline, but I'm not keen on any particular one. And of course, I tend to spend all my $ on skydiving now... less available for other interests. I'm not a big partier, so ours are just about right. But our group dinners kick ass! This last Saturday we did deep-fried turkey with all the trimmings and dessert. We're planning a lasagna bake-off. Can't wait! And I'm so hoping for another chance to jump the heli. Oh yeah! Had a blast last year, and living so close I simply can't imagine NOT going. Not many chances to jump anything but a Cessna around here. And the party at the Rockin Firkin can't be missed! Sal, if you find yourself in the area and need a ride, there are lots of jumpers from Kelowna and Vernon (about 1 1/2 hours south of Kamloops) who will be heading that way, and I'm sure a ride can be arranged. And if you find yourself here the weekend before the boogie, the plane will be flying in Vernon. drop me a pm if I can help. On my budget - or lack thereof - jumping at a wee cessna dz in Canada? Trust me, if I could be at a year-round, 7 day a week dz, that number would be way higher, and I'd be even farther in the red than I am. Like I said, circumstances. The number of jumps is not representative of the drive and desire for more, or of the time spent thinking/watching video/squatting against a wall to work on my sitfly position/reading about skydiving. My hubby and I were talking last night about how, although we both love skydiving, I'm way more addicted than he is. And even though I'm finding more balance in my life after 2 years in the sport, it's still the thing I think about all the time and I live for jump weekends. I keep telling myself that the hunger is easing off, that skydiving has its niche and that my life will be more... normal... but it's a lie. If the circumstances fit, I'd happily drop everything and live at a dz for a couple years, totally immerse myself in the sport. Is this healthy? I don't know, and don't really care. So, how addicted are you? Do you think of nothing else? Do you love it but it doesn't rule your life? Do you enjoy it as something to do but not all the time? So, where is this empty house, is it near any dz's, and where are the keys? I sense a place to stay on holidays... j/k Let's see... Gave up gardening. Some days that really stings, I love getting my hands dirty. For the first 1 1/2 years I gave up writing. This is BIG. I usually spend several hours a day writing, and for a long time I did none. I couldn't concentrate on anything but skydiving. Happily, I've begun writing again and feel much more balanced. Stopped jiu-jitsu. Stopped doing back country camping, although I'd love to get back to that. Gave up any semblance of financial stability. All in all, I'm completely happy with these changes! Sorry, but... I used to sell telescopes and other optics. I had a woman come in asking about a starter telescope, and I gave her the basic intro, asking questions to establish her real wants and explaining the usual things that beginners don't know. No big deal, she seemed reasonably intelligent. After about 15 minutes of this, just as I was thinking that maybe she really was a serious customer (at least 9 out of 10 cutomers weren't buyers, they just had questions and wanted to talk) she came out with the best line ever. 'So, with one of these telescopes, will I be able to communicate with the aliens who land in the field behind my house?' No I am not bsing. She said it with a straight face. I told her that it would not, and that she would need to visit the metaphysical store downtown. Yay I've got numbers! 15:4:0 15 number of bags of leaves and yard debris I've raked so far. So far. Still have more to do. 4 jumps, all sitting! Love love lovin' sitting! Now I need to get more action out of my forward drive, close distance a bit faster. 0 beer owed.
