  1. First heard it from the vet when I was younger. Then read about it and other breed-specific health problems for paps and many other breeds. Quickest to cite, of course, is Wiki: Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  2. Frankly it interests me where & why people do various things--particularly involving animals, children, elderly and probably many other things. The where and why is important w/r/t sociology, psychology, and anyone with an interest in the subject for whatever other reason--be it advertising animal-related services, products, marketing those things and/or conceptualizing them. A lot of people get paid a lot of money to pay attention to where & why people do things. The market for pets and pet products is no exception. As far as judgement goes, there are far pettier things to judge a person for. And I think where & why and even how a person acts w/r/t animals is a pretty good indicator of certain personality & behavioral traits. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  3. I'm not sure what the normal procedures are in New Zealand, but as far as I know, here in the U.S. you're required to take the animal for a complete check-up within one week of adoption. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  4. This touches on one of the primary points I wanted to make in this discussion. There sometimes (not always) seems to be a noticeable distinction between rescuers vs. purchasers in the way they view the animal. Some people view pets as property--and they are to a certain degree--but certainly a pet is not like a vase in that there are no laws w/r/t what you can do with your own vase. There are, however, laws about what you can do to your pets (thankfully!). Still, some people view their pets in much the same way as their beautiful vase. It's another thing to keep up with the joneses. It's a status symbol. Sure such a person might love their pet, but such a person also really loves their vase. Sadly, if such a person loves their vase more, and the pet breaks the vase, it's not unthinkable for the person to surrender the pet to an adoption facility or worse--stick it in the backyard, or crate or chain or somewhere to wait for hours in vain. Ironically, I've actually been working to make it "trendy" to rescue an animal vs. purchase. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  5. While this is true in some cases, I would say not all (or even most). Shelters don't just pick up a dog from the street and immediately put it up for adoption. And often mutts have far less health problems than pure-breds. My entire family has papillons and has since I was a little girl. And each went to a "reputable breeder" and were assured this and that. And as far as tempermant goes all is as promised. But, not a single one yet has not developed an enlarged heart, MR or some other heart problem. A couple also slowly lost their ability to see well. These are breed-specific problems. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  6. It's true many breed-specific rescue-organizations do often have animals with papers. And it's important to note not all of the animals came from abusive homes. Many were given up for other reasons such as the owner didn't do the proper research beforehand and wasn't prepared to care for the animal and/or did not expect the cost, elderly folks moving into a home which does not allow animals, a couple pregnant for the first time might give up a cat before term, or after pregnancy might give up a dog because babies take up a lot of time & energy, or these days people loosing their homes in foreclosure and having to find new housing and the new housing might not allow animals, or the family can no longer afford their animals. There are a ton of reasons and in most cases with these animals--especially in the breed-specific shelters--the shelter knows why the animal was surrendered, picked-up, etc. and this information is included on their card. Even at Animal Care & Control (where we got Cruz) they had surprisingly a ton of info on all the animals up for adoption. For example, we kept our eyes open for the cards that read: "Likes cats" as that was a primary concern of ours. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  7. I LOVE greyhound-rescues! My friend has one she rescued and his race-name was "Sir Thomas Moore". She calls him "Tommy". I LOVE Tommy. Tommy can run like the wind blows. And he LOVES to be loved. I would steal him from her in a heartbeat--oh my gosh! I just love watching him have a great time because he's so happy now. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  8. The pre-emptive strike! I love it! Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  9. Yea! I agree--while there are certain breeds of animals I love, I row in that same boat. And so important to note, some breeds are very happy to be just that! OTOH, it's sad to think of this type of dog in someone's backyard with nothing to do, and never much attention. The latter happens when people love a breed, but don't first research the breed's disposition. So, when it's mischievous in the house, they eventually put it outside and forget about it. 10. Absolutely--or wait long enough (nearly every shelter has wait lists for specific breeds). I actually meant to adopt an older one and ended up with 1-year-old Cruz (his age at the time, and that wasn't his kennel-name). I also meant to adopt a smaller dog. But, I'm sure some others will understand when I say: Often you don't pick them; they pick you. Anyways, I'd really love the next new member of the Fuzzy Butts to be older--like four to seven years.
  11. As always, I love reading your response!
  12. I understand your point. But, lumped they shall remain! Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  13. Wait, I can't tell...Chelle, are you saying this is a good or bad thing? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  14. The best method, imo, to achieve maximum felicity for all parties--both man & furball--is to first research the "general personalities" of all breeds, and then to consider one. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  15. I want to open up this topic to discuss in its own thread. It's clear many of us here enjoy our pets & sharing pet stories. I've noticed, however, there is often an underlying divide between those who rescue and those who purchase from a breeder and/or pet shop. To be clear: By "rescue" I'm referring to adopting an animal (usually also for a small fee) from a local shelter (Humane Society, Animal Care & Control, or breed-specific previously owned, abused or discarded animal society). I'd like to hear views from both rescuers & purchasers--specifically, why you rescue vs. purchase and vice-versa. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  16. My first thought was: It's one perspective. The problem--in my perspective--isn't the denying of the existence of inequalities, but rather the failure to accept one's own perspective isn't the only correct one. Or conversely, it could be argued no one perspective is correct. One thing's for certain: Our own perspective is always correct to us because that's what happened, that's what we heard, that's what we saw and that's what we felt. The gentleman in the video would obviously have a different perspective than I do. His comments are interesting and not unfounded, but "100% true", "spot on" or "100% correct"? Not from my perspective. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  17. I actually started to purchase the entire set (1, 2 & 3) but had second thoughts. I'd like to see how far 1 & 2 can get me. And I just spent $50 ordering two certified birth certificates, $120 for a new passport book & card and a ton of money on gas driving across town to the in-person location which is only open Mon. through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for passport purposes whilst loosing valuable work time, and time is money, and I'm fucking annoyed. What's ironic is after all that time & money spent it seems I've none of either left to go on the vacation I'm planning in the first place. (Teasing ). Edit: Oh and the best part was--like a dumbass--I spent several minutes going through the process on the state of Florida website to order a certified birth certificate when I remembered I wasn't born in Florida. 18. So I finally bought Rosetta Stone. We'll see if I use it, but I bought it nonetheless. There's a guy at work who annoys the fuck out of me because he speaks fluent Spanish and gets a ton of extra business because of it--often business that would have been mine had the potential client spoken just a little English (I can speak/understand well enough with them). And on top of that, he keeps treading on my turf and using my ideas. This serves as excellent inspiration to learn & cut him off at the knees. No more handing him leads on silver platter. They will all be mine! Mwwaaah. Haaaa. Haaaaa. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  19. It looks like now's a great time to buy directly from the website. They are having special offers on sets: Save $109 on any Level 1 & 2 set. Save $208 on any Level 1, 2 & 3 set. When you check out, it will automatically plug in code "Set123". Remove this code. The price will stay the discounted price. Then enter code: emc038a This code will save you $50 on any Level 1, $80 on any Level 1 & 2 set and $100 on any Level 1, 2 & 3 set. I just bought the Spanish (Latin America) Level 1 & 2 set. 20. As I grow older I make more. I haven't yet decided if that's a good thing. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

    Juno

I just saw it. From another Juno thread: Um, she wasn't bored. My favorite part of the entire movie (I'm paraphrasing): And you weren't bored because there were like a ton of things on TV that night, and The Blair Witch Project was playing on Starz, and you said how you were so excited because you hadn't seen it since it came out and la la la la la. "And la la la la la." Heelarious! I enjoyed it. While I abstained from sex in my teens, I viewed the movie in an entirely different manor than VSky. It was fantastic! Four out of five Netflix stars. 22. We've had several panther sightings near dog park.
