Southern states were buying goods from Europe cheaper than they could buy them from the Northern states. They thought it would be short and sweet. Two years later, Abraham Lincoln was having trouble selling the political ideal of Union to the tired Northern states. He then mounted a campaign to pretend the whole thing had been about slavery all along. Abolitionists joined the band waggon and the war regained momentum. Meanwhile, the Southern states had overestimated the value of their cotton in a Europe that had stocked up on cotton before the war. They were unable to recruit Europe to their cause and ran out of funds and industrial production capacity. Then, they invaded the North and stoked the fires of indignation of the Northern states. After the war, the Northern states wrote the history books to pretend the cause had been moral indignation all along. And that's what little children are taught in school still today. From reading the works of the Founding Fathers, I think the US started out with a principle that one's earnings were personal property and taking that away was tantamount to theft, whether the taker was private or government. Today, it seems anything I earn belongs to the government for it's use or to someone else because they 'deserve' it. Government routinely decides that someone 'deserves' assistance. At the same time, they decide that I (and you) do not 'deserve' what we earned. Government takes what we do not deserve and gives it to someone else. Oddly, the 'deserving' person often votes for the government representative who makes this decision. To answer the question: we once owned what we earned. Today, we all belong to the government and don't own anything. Doubt me? Don't pay your property taxes and see what home ownership does for you. I have no use for either agency. Put whatever you want into your body. Just don't expect me to pay for your healthcare if it goes wrong. Don't endanger others. Stay off my (NOT public) assistance. Cell phones have been invented since I was a teen. I usually tell my daughter a time and express it as '9ish' or whatever. If she's going to be more than a few minutes late, she's to call me. I think you got carried away with the copy and paste function. You have 'sick leave to care for partner' in there at least three times. Most marital benefits can be re-created or thwarted through a will, power of attorney or other simple instruments. I think most benefits come from a time when women were in a lesser position to their husbands and needed protection under the law. For instance: a woman plays the role of the homemaker and her husband dies. If she did not work 40 quarters, she does not qualify for social security benefits. So, the law accounts for that and allows her to draw against her husband's accrual of benefits. There was a constitutional amendment decades ago that tried to eliminate most of those benefits. The Equal Rights Amendment. It was a big feminist issue. They rightly claimed that those types of laws facilitated women maintaining a backseat role to men. I happen to have the equivalent of a blackbelt in a Japanese Swordsmanship martial art. Swinging that kilo of steel for any length of time is exhausting. Anything heavier would be more so. Also, skill counts for so much more than you would think. Having seen it done doesn't mean you can do it too. The machete would be best for most people because it can be used effectively with little skill. It isn't overly heavy and it works in close quarters. In the given scenario, if space permits, a heavier sword would likely damage the head faster than a katana. Since there are only three or four zombies left, the swordsman would be very tired afterwards, but alive. Something along the lines of a broadsword or hand a half would fit the bill. Were there more zombies or more action expected, I would opt for the lighter weapon for speed and endurance. In closer quarters, a wakizashi, machette or similar shorter edged weapon would be my preference. A long knife could act as a backup, but requires more skill than the machette to cut off a head. I would personally opt for the katan, because I have trained extensively with it. But, if we were in tighter quarters, I would be forced to go with a shorter weapon. So...it depends on the details of the situation. Even Samurai typically carried more than just the long sword. Inside, they carried the shorter wakizashi or even a tanto (knife). My ex-wife was really hard on cars. I was trying to find her a Mercedes (well built. Last), wagon (practical. Not a sports car), diesel (good mileage. Not a sports car. I've always considered a well toned rear end a much better indicator of fitness than breasts (which are pretty well genetics). There is a genetic component to the rear as well, but less so. So, the nice back side could be indicative of someone who takes care of themselves, has at least a little self-respect, has some discipline to exercise, etc. Not necessarily, but certainly more so than hitting the genetic lottery on breasts. I'm not big on religion being pushed on anyone. But I have to admire people who are so passionate that they will try to reach out to that particular segment of the population. I read the article from top to bottom. Didn't find any reason to think badly of them. They promote free enterprise and smaller government. I can't afford to pal around with them, but it sounds like I would like to. The genesis of the article was that someone (I presume someone who disagrees with the brothers) called the Governor's office and lied about being one of the brothers in order to talk to him.
