  1. You mean like a surgeon? HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  2. I won't. Fuck 'em. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  3. The Black Plauge was spread by rats who transmitted it via fleas. It is well known that rats need very little to live on. They are quite abundant even in neighborhoods where our Gods surgeons live. Do you believe a person should have their wages restricted because of their job? Do you believe a man is entitled to charge what he wants for the work he does as long as the customer is willing to pay it? Do you believe a person is within their rights to take advantage of anothers misfortune by charging an hourly rate that is far in excess of what most other professionals make? HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  4. Pretty much but I don't know why you included prostitutes. Just because you have sheep , doesn;t mean everyone does... Whatever HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  5. In terms of number of people benefitting from it, it is far more important. Surgeons have a direct impact on a relatively few people. Most people never have to have surgey. Work longer, sure. But that is a major reason why i feel they are not worth what they charge. If somebody is going to be cutting on me they damn well better be fresh and alert. I don't care if it is a heart transplant or remove my appendix. If they aren't then they are providing second-rate services. Harder? I doubt that very much. As a weldor yourself you should know that most surgeons would run home crying to mommy if they had to work in the conditions most weldors see every day. Laying on their back in a muddy trench freezing their ass off, etc. More stressfull? I'd put that at 50/50. 7. You really have a problem understand the concept of of "not replaced", don't you? HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  8. That's your useless hypothetical, yes. Did air travel stop when Reagan fired all of the air traffic controllers? No. They were replaced. There were lots of people looking for work at the time, happy to do it. It's a shock to the system, and some knowledge would have to be relearned over time. I is actually a very good hypothetical. It is a good way of comparing overall value of a trade. Docotors are near the top but several rank far above them. Most valuable are agriculturalists. Most people these days would starve without somebody else supplying them with food. Skilled infrastucture trades would be right behind. These are your carpenters, masons, weldors, etc. Right up there with them are educators. Then come doctors but they would not be so dearly missed as the rest since their impact is relatively small. Yes, they cure illnesses and save lives but mankind is like any other animal and can get along as a species and civilization without them. Remember, most of the New World was settled by people who never saw a doctor in their life. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  9. But they would be replaced. That's the point. Doctors aren't irreplaceable either. There could be many more than there are currently. But still more difficult to replace, and longer to do so. Its my opinion that MANY of the things that doctors claim to be the only ones capable of doing are actually being done by the physicians assistants and nurses. Many of those people can and would do more if the AMA was not standing in the way of training them to do more of the day to day work that is of a routine nature. What? And take away some of the illusion that they are some kind of god? It will never happen. LOL, talk about words you will eat some day, I hope you remember them, while laying their praying that some doctor/surgeon can save your life! With most of them working long hours with little or no sleep in a high stress environment I would be more inclined to pray they don't take my life. 11. But they would be replaced. That's the point. Doctors aren't irreplaceable either. There could be many more than there are currently. But still more difficult to replace, and longer to do so. No, the point was if they were NOT replaced. Read the post again. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  12. You didn't read the entire post. I said if they quit and were not replaced. I guess you have just been working too much and missed that part. 13. Except for the fact he is taking advantage of people's misfortune. You weren't? After what he charged me, you bet your ass I did! And I'd do it again without hesitation. 14. you bet - from each according to his means - no problem Absolutely. That is why we never charged a child for fixing their bike, a handicapped person for fixing their wheelchair, or the local fire department for whatever repairs they needed and couldn't do themselves. 16. No, I charged him what I thought he would be willing to pay. Same way he charged me. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  17. So it is ok for a doctor to take advantage of my situation and charge me as much as he thinks he can get, but I am a dick for doing the same to him? Sorry, Bill, but I don't agree at all. after you have done 4 years premed, 8 years medical, 2 years internship, another raditional 4 yeas minimum specialised surgical training, come on back with your whine about how long it took to learn to weld, (BTW , I am a welder) Sorry, I don't buy into the "it took x number of years to get my title" argument. Many trades are only mastered after 10 or 20 or more years of experience and learning. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.

  19. It's strangely compelling shit. Note that the Romans managed to build extensive infrastructure without welding. But they did have surgeons. And the question shouldn't be which has greater value to society. It's which is more replaceable if all its participants got up and quit. I happen feel the value is the impact it would have on society if all its particpants got up and quit and were not replaced. Who would be missed more? And, BTW, the Romans did have welding. They also had brazing, soldering, and the ability to create alloys. These processes were vital to the infrastructure and Empire they created. The Egyptians also had the ability to join metals. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  20. So why all the people here giving me grief for charging a fee that was obviously worthwhile or I would not have been stopped from un-doing my work? A surgeon charges several thousand dollars for a couple hours work and everybody says it's ok. I charge the same hourly rate for a few minutes work and those same people have a fit. I guess I have to do like the medical profession and convince people...and myself...that i am a god. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  21. So you feel saving the lfe of a dying person is of greater value to society than preventing the deaths of many? HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  22. You keep trying to make the argument that if a welder FUCKS UP he could kill hundreds of people with his shotty work. Which in turn somehow makes his skill set as, or more important than the surgeons. but By that logic, a commuter train conductor could also kill hundreds of people if he/she fucks up. No offense to train conductors, but you can teach a monkey to conduct a train. And you underestimate the skills needed to be a top notch weldor. BTW, the word is "shoddy", not shotty. Shoddy, with two d's. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  23. Can a surgeon prevent the catastrophic deaths of hundreds of people at the same time? Maybe, but probably not. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  24. Not all surgeons have quite the same luxury- certainly this is only possible for elective- or at least planned- procedures. Simpler does not always = better. Agreed. However, in this case it does. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
  25. Now that surgeon deserves every dollar he makes. I hope your dad is doing well. If they all did that then there would be far fewer mistakes. Fewer mistakes would lead to lower insurance which would let them earn more while working less. But that is probably too simple an idea and will never catch on.
