Total ban on cellphone use while driving
Belgian_Draft replied to akarunway's topic in Speakers Corner
First off I'll say right out that I will talk on my cell while driving. But that is never in heavy traffic or bad weather and I keep the conversation as brief as possible. I also NEVER discuss important business while driving. I owe it to myself and clients to give them 100% of my attention. That said, I would be the first to welcome a total ban on all use of cell phones while driving, emergency situations exempt. Why? Because anything a driver does requires attention that can be better used for driving. Anybody who feels they can drive better giving the road 75% of their attention than they can giving it 100% is fooling theirself. Hands-free has been shown to be no less distracting than a conventional cell. I've seen too many people who can't even walk while chatting on a phone to believe the distraction isn't a significant factor in a high number of fatals each year. Hell, I was walked into by a girl talking on her phone...while I was standing in a checkout line! Then she looked at me like it was my fault! P.S.- If I see someone behind me in traffic drinking coffee, smoking a cig, and talking on a phone (hands free or not) you can bet your ass they'll get a quick brake check. (As long as nobody is close behind them, that is.) I like the way you think. Tequila with a Heineken chaser it is. Good way to get rid of the Heinie and I'll have the Guinness for enjoying on it's own tomorrow.

I have a 5 liter mini keg of Heineken, a 12 pack of Guinness in bottles, and half a bottle of tequila. Which should I drink tonight? So you don't practice malfunction procedures? Of course I do. Most of my range time with my Springfield is just that. Where did I say I didn't? The fact is, every gun will malfunction at some point. None of them are perfect. Ammo varies, parts wear, and so on. Sooner or later, it will happen. And if you can do a simple double-check to ensure that you're really got a round in the chamber, when you're life is on the line, what's the harm? If you read my post you would not have to ask that question, but I'll answer anyway. I have had other semi-autos fail to fire after pulling the slide back. THAT is where the harm can come from. If you want to check yours, fine. I choose to have a weapon that is reliable enough I need to check. If you want to discuss this further, maybe you should start a thread in SC. Yeah, but in a self defense situation, that first "click" could be the difference between life and death. You need to know that there is a round in the chamber ready to go. Like I said, my carry weapon (a Springfield 1911-A1) has never (NEVER!) failed to pickup that top round off a clip. After loading and emptying several hundred magazines of ammo I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that there is a round in the chamber. And before you ask, yes, I am willing to bet my life on it. My opinion is that if you don't fully trust your weapon to function perfectly every time, then you need to get a different weapon. I used to check, but I never had the slide fail to pick up the top round. But I did have, on occasion, the slide fail to go all the way back to battery and my pistol would not fire. Auto-loaders are designed and made for the slide to slam back into position, not eased or bumped, so it is not surprising this happened to me. Now, I just pop in a clip and let the gun do it's thing. Besides, if it won't pick up that top round, I wouldn't have confidence in it picking up the second, or the third, etc. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.

Agreed. John 3:16 on his face and thanking His Lord God for the win. Gimme a break Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the guy. he's one hell of a QB and has a bright future ahead of him. It's just that there are dozens of other players taking the field who worked just as hard as tebow. They deserve their moment in the spotlight. Good game so far, and looks like it will be to the end. Florida just took it in to go up 24-14. The only problem i had was Fox Sports announcers. I ended up turning the volume down and listening to some music while watching the game and getting caught up on some work. It seemed everytime I turned around they were practically proclaiming Tebow as the second coming of Christ ! you are not getting the point, as most americans don't! No, you're not. Answer the question, too. How often do you need 679 l of water? Or for your esoteric scenario, 14.4kg of ballast? It's a rare need in life, so the benefits of the easy translation aren't great. And as I said, if you know that conversion, you might also know 8.8lbs/gallon (or 64lbs cubic foot). This is why Americans don't care. We rarely go beyond the 2liter bottle of soda, the gallon of milk, or the 750 of tequila. Except for those of us who use measurements and subsequent calculations to make a living. Everyday I have to convert volume to weight and vice-versa. Metrics are MUCH easier to deal with. The only reason not to change...the ONLY reason...is people's fear of something they don't understand and don't want to understand. If someone searched a good percentage of the gardens most likely to contain fairies, found none, and proclaimed that they "probably don't exist", I would trust his judgement far more than that of someone who believed in and worshipped one big fairy that supposedly lives in the sky. Ya know what, i think I'm gonna join the "metrics suck" group. I mean, really, isn't it much simpler to convert inches to feet to yards to miles...than to convert millimetres to centimetres to metres to kilometres. All those tens give me a headache. And volume! Ounces, pints, quarts, gallons is soooo much easier than much easier than those pesky liters. Heck, their just based on those stupid metre things anyway. And weights & mass...forget it! Grams are crackers, not units of mass. Overall, it's just ridiculous to have 1000 cubic centimetres be called 1 liter, and have 1 liter of pure water at 4C be of 1 kilogram mass. It's just stupid. Sorry, my bad. I saw the green screen name and thought it was Bill. What would you suggest as a better standard? Pure water is easy to get, temperature is easy to control. Actually, water is pretty arbitrary too since it density varies quite a bit with temperature, so you have to put all sorts of other conditionals on it. Hi Bill. I'm surprised you didn't already know that temp and purity were specified. From Wiki (no other reason tha it's easy to copy & paste)...
