Different way to flare?
millertime24 replied to millertime24's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well, damn. Guess I better send back my Velo Comp I just ordered after watching those swoops. I DO have common sense. Do you? Muff #5048 -
I could make a "mistake" while doing a brake job on my car. Does that make me any less liable if I run over your child because of that mistake? My point is riggers should be up to date on all the gear they are dealing with, and an oversight such as NOT routing the reserve closing loop inside the cutter is just plain negligence Muff #5048

You're right. Ill have to do this a bunch more times then I can formulate a decision on if it's a better way to do it or not. Muff #5048 -
Different way to flare?
millertime24 replied to millertime24's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
See, that's kind of what I was thinking. Plus lets not forget that you have the added fact that the canopy is a piece of fabric and not a solid wing which could also play into the characteristics of this. Muff #5048 -
Different way to flare?
millertime24 replied to millertime24's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's inefficient and less predictable. Basically you're screwing up the highest potential for your landing whether or not it happens to freekishly just work out. Thats intteresting. I recall seeing a guy land like this at Ritzville a while ago on every jump he did. I do agree that it isn't a very viable way to land in shifting winds, but the result I got today was better than ideal. Muff #5048 -

Different way to flare?
millertime24 replied to millertime24's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
So youtube got to me again, and I figured I would try something I saw on a skydiving video. Basically, when I went to flare, instead of the standard "flying the canopy to the ground" bit I usually do, I pumped the brakes several times rapidly. To my amazement it actually gave me the softest no-wind landing Ive ever had. My question is, what is happening differently when doing this with the canopy? Also I have not yet had the chance to try this in a cross-wind landing, but I'm sure it's doable. Anywho, any canopy/phisics experts out there care to explain why this method of flaring works so well? Gear info: Pilot 150 W/L 1.35-1 Muff #5048 -
Already have my plane tickets. Can't wait to have a flocking good time, and jumping with my brother again.

For the record, you guys are my heros! It's great for newer w/s'ers like myself to watch things like this and strive to be this good at some point. BTW, you guys are flying Shadows I noticed. What is the reasoning behind this (ie. why not a P2 or a Ghost)? Great flying, and props to the camera flyer too. Without good video we wouldn't be able to watch incredible maneuvers like this. +1 .... no kidding. so lets see, what could we get for that kind of money...hmmm, more education at a school, a rig...ok, guys lets hear some more... Pay off debt, partial down payment on a home, REALLY nice vacation, more for the wedding, more for things you can actually use (computers, phone upgrades etc). Basically there's WAY more usefull things to spend your money on than a tiny piece of shiney rock. Muff #5048

Purchased my first Log book!

Cool! I'm the same way. I'm always super stoked whenever I buy skydiving related stuff (which would explain why the back of my car looks like a skydiving billboard). Wait untill you get other stuff thats with you for the jump that belongs to you (alti, helmet, rig etc). Like crack I tell ya. Muff #5048 -
Congratulations, nice job. I'm a really old guy (well into geezerhood) and not especially strong but I don't get tired arms. I suspect you may be trying to muscle it too much. That actually could be true. I really push my elbows up level with my ears as hard as I can. Maybe I'm just pushing against material more than is needed to obtain good flight position. Also, what suit do you fly? I hear the Tony Suits have the variable preassure zippers which (according to my friend who flies one) makes the suit easier to fly. I just dont know not having jumped both brands. Thanks for the advice though. I'll give it a try this weekend.

I just watched the vid. I'm sure I would devolope a case of tourettes if that shit happened to me. As far as a glove in the canopy, that could just be your packer fucking with you. I know a couple guys who packed their friends canopy with 2 bottles worth of baby powder inside the slider. Muff #5048

Thanks everyone. I was just trying to practice maxing the suit using the coaching I got from Justin Schorb. The flight style was identical the the coach jumps he did with me at the WS over Utah event. I told the pilot to give me 3 miles past the last person out. I made it back and had a great jump. I will add that once under canopy and everything unzipped I just sat in the harness for a good while before unstowing my brakes just to get some feeling back in my arms. Looks like Ill be spending even more time at the gym. Muff #5048

Today I took my P2 on a XC flight. I got out over Hill AFB and opened just over the tower at Ogden Hinkley Airport. The altitude was 11,800' and pulled at 3k. Delay was 133 sec according to my Neptune. When I got to the ground I was flat out knackered. Muff #5048
