The last two GOP nomination acceptance speeches
livendive replied to livendive's topic in Speakers Corner
Yeah, I already raised that point elsewhere. Why in the world would the GOP expect us to vote for a guy who they consider worse than Bush? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
Maybe if Michelle Obama is disfigured in a car accident, we'll find out. I know somehow Obama had the smarts and character to excel in school, and McCain didn't. Blues, Dave I know many people who accelled academically that I wouldn't want running the country. Obama's Ivy League education doesn't qualify him in my opinion. In fact, for me it makes him suspect. Universities have been a hotbed of left wing thinking for years. I think Obama their prodigal son. Do you feel the same way about GWB? At least Obama earned his way into Harvard, rather than have daddy pave the way. When McCain's wife was disfigured in a car accident, he cheated on her, then left her for a younger, wealthier woman. When McCain was in school, he fucked off rather than trying to succeed. Obama hasn't left his wife. Obama put some effort into his schooling and succeeded. I'm mostly playing devil's advocate here. With some exceptions, I think McCain is a decent enough man. I just don't think you have any standing to say that McCain has character and Obama doesn't. Honestly, I don't know what case you're talking about. My guess is that it's not being relayed accurately and that, rather than requiring the state break the law, he somehow suspended it otherwise exempted them from complying it. Well, except for those women unfortunate enough to live in states that don't think they deserve a choice. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I disagree. Course directors, for the most part, test more than teach. It's the responsibility of INSTRUCTORS to teach and to lead by example. If there are bad (as opposed to new) coaches working at a dropzone, blame the instructors first for not teaching them, and then the DZO and S&TA for allowing them to work with students. Meh. I've watched enough poor speeches over the last 8 years. And the crescendo of "fight! fight! fight! fight!" was spot on stereotypical. I'd rather have a great orator and statesman than another cowboy who can't even appear sincere and who's already looking for a fight. My favorite part of the speech (on PBS) was 10 seconds after McCain encouraged people to teach an illiterate adult to read, when they showed someone waving around a sign that said, "The Mavrick!" I believed in McCain in 2000 and would have voted for him over Gore, but the Republicans decided GWB was better, so I didn't get that choice. 8 years later, all of which involved him getting more in line with his party, I certainly don't want someone WORSE than the Shrub. And if it's at all possible, his fake smile is even less sincere than Bush's smirk. I appreciate his service to this country, but am not particularly interested in the brand he's selling now. Though I think McCain made a smart choice with Palin (assuming the scandals can be handled), Quade made a good point...she's upstaging the top of the ticket, and I suspect that it will take a deliberate effort to keep that from continuing. I think the government needs to perform some pretty basic functions, and whenever practical, those functions should be performed by state governments. I'd like to see a hell of a lot less governmental intrusion in private lives. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Yes. Blues, Dave So let me see if I get your position correctly. If a Dem gets others removed from the ballot on Technicalities, therfore removing choice, and a Dem benifits AND, in another case a Dem is pulled from a bollot for crimes but a judge OVERRULES state law not on a tech but simply says, the people need to be able to choose, then, you are OK will all of this as long as a DEM benifits. Wow....... Goes a long way toward building yourself any credibility me thinks Quite a bit of fabricating you did there. All I said was the law should be followed and people should have a choice. The rest was entirely your imagination. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

For purposes of reference, when she took over as mayor of Wasilla, the total budget she was handed for her first year was $8.2M. The budget she handed to her successor 6 years later was $18.6M. That's some serious growth! I read somewhere she also accumulated $20M worth of debt for the city during those 6 years. I can see now why the Republicans are so enamored with her. Bigger government and more debt...she rocks! Blues, Dave So you are a libertarian? I only ask because a dem accusing the reps of bigger gov and more debt is pot/kettle area. I suppose so, though I don't really stick with one party. I've voted for candidates from both major parties in different elections, but I've probably voted for more Libertarians than D's or R's in the last 8 years. I agree that both the D's and R's are for bigger government, it's just been my experience (as an adult) that the R's are bigger offenders than the D's. The estate tax is scheduled to go to 55% on everything over 1 million dollars in 2011. Obama's proposal to limit it to 45% of everything over 3.5 million dollars is thus a REDUCTION from the current plan. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

How in the world would Obama's opponents know his plans better than he does? The claims are patently false. They have NOT been verified. They are NOT what Obama plans. They've been discredited by a bipartisan group dedicated to sorting through such political propaganda. They've also been discredited by snopes. The only reason you would possibly believe them is because you want to believe them. It's certainly NOT because they have any basis in fact. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" I consider the "elite" to be especially gifted, especially with regard to intelligence and/or ability. I consider "elitists" to be those who falsely perceive themselves to be better than the common man, especially with regard to unearned wealth or power, but sometimes also intellect and/or ability. Someone who has worked their way to the top of the socioeconomic ladder is most likely elite. Someone who was born or married into their socioeconomic status is most likely elitist. If I had to guess, it'd be that your auto repair business doesn't pay corporate taxes, but rather gets itemized with your personal taxes. If you make more than $250k/year doing auto repair and your increased taxes aren't offset by the small business tax credits, I'm sure your customers will be able to handle the 3% or 4.5% increase on your profits (assuming you're wildly successful and keep 33% of your gross as profit, that'd mean your customers will have to pay a whopping 1% to 1.5% on their bottom line...at 10 or 15 bucks per thousand spent, I think they can handle it). I don't think it's any secret that he intends to raise income taxes on the highest earners. For perspective, here's what those top two income tax rates are now (hint, he's gonna raise taxes on singles earning more than $165k/year or couples earning more than $200k/year by 3 percent, and he's gonna raise taxes on people earning more than $357k/year by 4.5%) Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Do you think 95% of working Americans make more than $250k per year (per family, $200k per individual)? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Selective hearing is something we all fall prey to (myself included). Perhaps you only heard the parts of his acceptance speech in which he promised things that will cost money and didn't hear the part where he talked about paying for those things. I'll paste that entire portion for your review. No, it's not terribly in-depth, as an acceptance speech isn't the right forum for such detail. It does however clue the listener in that he has a plan for financing. Looking at the budget performance of the last 28 years of our history, you may notice 8 years that were not defined by massive deficit growth. Those 8 years suggest to me that the Democrats have become the more fiscally responsible of the two major parties. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Show me where these claims were validated by the linked news sources. I actually looked, presumably you didn't. The CNN link in your post doesn't go to any verification, but while there, I found this about Obama's position on capital gains and dividends taxes. That agrees with factcheck.org and directly contradicts the crap you posted. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Copied a post from another thread courtesy of Normiss CAPITAL GAINS TAX MCCAIN 0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples). McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax. OBAMA 28% on profit from ALL home sales. (How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.) DIVIDEND TAX MCCAIN 15% (no change) OBAMA 39.6% - (How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama becomes president. The experts predict that 'Higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market, yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.') INCOME TAX MCCAIN (no changes) Single making 30K - tax $4,500 Single making 50K - tax $12,500 Single making 75K - tax $18,750 Married making 60K- tax $9,000 Married making 75K - tax $18,750 Married making 125K - tax $31,250 OBAMA (reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts) Single making 30K - tax $8,400 Single making 50K - tax $14,000 Single making 75K - tax $23,250 Married making 60K - tax $16,800 Married making 75K - tax $21,000 Married making 125K - tax $38,750 Under Obama, your taxes could almost double! INHERITANCE TAX MCCAIN - 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax) OBAMA Restore the inheritance tax Many families have lost businesses, farms, ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will only lose them to these taxes. NEW TAXES PROPOSED BY OBAMA New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400 square feet. New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already) New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity) New taxes on retirement accounts, and last but not least....New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!! You can verify the above at the following web sites: cnn cnn2 fox? AARP WP WP2 Sometimes not changing is a good thing As I posted in that other thread, the above is a pack of lies.
