What not to do (how the Aggie almost died)
nacmacfeegle replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
"Wait a little before you start to post things so strongly....You will be made to look stupid if you do this." This is good advice Stylin, take heed. There are instances where going a whole lot lower than 4000 makes sense for safety reasons, not to mention exiting the aircraft a hell of a lot lower than your minimum 4000. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "And god damn thats one mother of a fire!!! " Yep, we (the offshore industry in Aberdeen) lost 167 good guys in that one. If you google Piper Alpha, you can find all sorts of information on it. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "And screw that repel device!" The donut thing came about after we had a big bad fire offshore on the Piper Alpha, some guys had to jump 240+ ft into the sea to escape. Now thats a long way to jump with no rope and no base rig. But the boys had to make a choice, fly or fry. You'll find that most climbing ropes don't really like being heated up that much, the tape used on the donuts is heat resistant, and you put it on like a diaper. I lost count of how many times I've seen people puzzling out how to put a climbing harness on. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "WGN-TV won an Emmy for the story on the 1998 300-way attempt (the reporter was also a jumper on the attempt) at Skydive Chicago." Now thats good news! The media are very much like a lot of other things in this life, you get what you give. During the British record attempts in 99, one of our stated goals was to generate 'positive publicity' for the sport. To achieve this we did a lot of work with the media, gave them press releases, stills, footage, interviews with jumpers and organisers, access to the DZ, etc, etc. Result was extensive positive media coverage of a visually pleasing event. I think we had at least 12 different TV slots, and some stations covered the show with a nightly spot, including daily video clips. We even had a major national newspaper give a centre page spread when the formation completed. Jump for the cause from the same year did similar stuff, with good effect. Local media also loves "granny makes lifetime ambition" type stories, people who are jumping to raise money for a charity, and virtually anything with a local interest. If you make a little effort you CAN get the media to give you positive coverage. So quit whining and demonising the media, feed them positive stuff, and you'll get positive results! If you ignore them then don't be surprised if they only come round when something bad happens. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Hey Antonio, it might be worth going to visit your local dropzone, or phoning them. There is a list of Italian DZs here..... http://www.dropzone.com/dropzone/Europe/Italy/index.html The local jumpers will probably be happy to chat and answer your questions...... There are some good skydivers from Italy, the Frick Freefly team (Atmonauti) are great people. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I'm not saying jumpers shouldn't have a wee rig like this in their hi rise offices, but for whuffoes? We chatted about this a longtime ago, just after 9/11 in fact. The general consensus was that peeps using this system would more likely be a nuisance, bogging down EMTs with minor sprains and ankle breaks etc. It makes much more sense to provide people with a set of nomex coveralls, a smoke hood, a light stick, and some heat resistant gloves. Damn sight cheaper too. As for rapelling down the side of a building, we already have fuckwit proof escape systems like this offshore. http://www.offshore-technology.com/contractors/safety/emi/index.html#emi4 In forum discussion on this subject here http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=48456;search_string=escape;#48456 -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Did you any problems with TSA at either airport?" I flew in and out of Bush (flying international and domestic) a lot last year, took the rig as carry on about 6 times with no problems. I flew mainly with BA and KLM, but did a couple of domestics with Continental. Just arrive in plenty of time, check any knives in as hold baggage, and be prepared to smile and be polite to the nice security people. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "i have a 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive." If you partition it and keep all your apps on one virtual drive, and keep all your footage, choonz, titles, etc on the other partition you may notice some improvements. Its worth a try and could be a quick fix. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "I've been told that a "perfect" fit for an articulated harness is if the middle of the hip ring is centered at the top of your hip bone (i.e. the first point that you can feel if you run your finger from your last rib down your side) when the leg straps are snugged up." Her's a neat way to find out if the hip rings/harness length are right for you. Put the rig on, snug everything up, and point your fingie through the hip ring, raise your knee up, if the ring moves relative to your fingie, its your body thats the wrong shape. This is essentially what Lisa suggested, but is easier than trying to guess where the centre of the "hip bone" is. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Why wait that long for a rig when you have other choices that are just as good or better?" If its worth having, its worth waiting for, patience young Jedi. Lisa posted a great thread about gear lead times a while back. The market is seasonal, if you can hold off until certain times of the year, you can get them in a reasonable timeframe. Last Javelin I ordered actually came earlier than promised, it was ordered in the autumn. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Anyone know him?" Are you exporting in the same format you are capturing in? There is a project preset that should be called "pal dv" or something like that. Can you capture a clip, place it on the timeline, stretch the wee yellow bar to cover the clip then export without rendering? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Hope i soon is out of pain killers, just want back jumping" Take some time out right now to do the physio therapy, there will be a lot of muscle wastage with that fixator being in place for a while. When you can jump off a picnic table, and can run around, it will be time..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "there is a great advantage in having procedures that seem simple to you (as long as they cover all common scenarios) so often it's a good idea to just stick with what you've got" I'm a big fan of the KISS principle, and to my mind having newbies and lowtimers (no offence to lowtimers!) taught only one procedure is in keeping with this. If you give a student, or lowtimer, a choice of procedures, there is a definite probability that they will inevitably make the wrong choice. In terms of numbers for risk assessment, it is not unusual to assume a 3 to 10% "wrong decision" rate (human factor failures) for, say, process plant control room operators, during high stress events. Having only one set of proecures reduces this "wrong decision" rate significantly. Not a big deal for a PC in tow, but could be significant for other 'normal' malfunctions.... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Sangiro and the greenies see users ISP addresses or something else that they can identify users by. In this case the guy obviously didn't have enough brains to change his ISP or whatever. He is Shabakazaa, aka Tim Heintzman from Bloomington Illinois. If you want to mail him, his zip code and his normal e-mail address are on his profile, look them up. He has also posted under other pseudonyms (something which is frowned upon by the bossman) in equally futile attempts to disrupt the karma and good feelings that pervade this site. Hey Hook, while your in the Lab (visualising Frarnkenfurter from Rocky horror show).. Take a look at how velcro behaves when its wet and frozen..... I'm thinking about velcro that might easily get wet, say the wee tab on a main PC bridle.....or toggles Also perhaps the velco on handles, which admittedly is less likely to get wet.... I've been led to believe in the past that wet velcro + freezing conditions = bad juju -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I had a pal who described this to me once. Procedure was to wear a neoprene diving hood- balaclava- thingie. Slap on quick drying plaster of paris and badges to bulk it up, chill for a while drink beer through a straw, then cut it off and you have a cast of the head. When you come to build the cam helmet, you build it with the prospect of using (or re-using can't remember) the diving hood as a helmet liner to adjust for any irregularities, and make the whole thing fit nice and snug and comfy. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "For once I'm glad it's going to be raining this weekend cause I won't be able to jump this thing without the lens and cable anyway." Hey Deuce, why don't you use the wet weekend to go out and about and play with your camera? I mean experiment with various settings, light conditions, fast and slow moving subjects etc. I'm pretty sure the camera will record settings, so you don't even have to take note of apertures, priorites etc.... Knowing your camera intimately will ultimately make you a better photographer. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I load my spectre at around 1.5-6ish. which is at or around the placcarded limit for this canopy. The performance is spirited to say the least, I have about 450 jumps on this canopy and I still have some performance exploration to do with it, if I feel like it. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Haar, I had no life before I started jumping, so those years don't count. Actually I had a pretty good life, but I'm looking for a way to avoid telling you guys how young I am not..... Which makes me 10 years old this coming september. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
