  1. I'm actually shocked and awed that the jokers aren't Chirac and Schroeder. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  2. If Skreamer is spotting, take your passport, a GPS, emergency rations, a signalling mirror, some water, and a phrase book for various languages! Seriously, I've landed way off at Vichy in particular, jet jumps, you get strung out a fair bit. But they are ready for it. I normally carry a pull-up, a couple of stows and a couple of coins. I've necer needed a cell phone. Tactics if you are landing out would be to try and land with some other people, as long as their landing area is clear. You can look after each other in te event of minor sprains, twists, hard landings, etc, and its easier to round you all up. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 3. Thanks for the link Wendy. There's a whole load of associated stuff on the Amnesty International page here http://www.amnestyusa.org/waronterror/ Oh, and welcome back Zennie....

  5. "Here I am...at the office and BORED OUT MY WITS!!! " Wanna feel better, I've been busy most of the day in my office, now I'm off to the PUB! For any Aberdeen jumpers out there, I'll be in the Dutch Mill in 5 minutes and I'll be the big guy guzzling Heinekin! -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 6. "Sickening and wasteful, and I can't help but wonder (as many from Oz no doubt do today) whether the British commanders would have been so careless of the lives they were squandering on those beaches if said lives had been British..." Well the same tactics were being deployed on the western front around about the same time at the Somme, Verdun, Ypres, Flanders etc with an equal, if not greater, wastage of human life. So I doubt if it was a nationality thing, just plain, pig headed, ignorant outmoded commanders. Somebody else mentioned the charge of the light brigade, different war, different era, but still a futile waste of life. It prompted one French commander who witnessed it to comment.. C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre. However infamous, the charge itself 'only' consisted of about 673 men. Not a lot compared to the carnage of WW1. Anyway, to get back on track, there's a good Gallipoli page here...http://www.firstworldwar.com/battles/gf.htm Lest we forget. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 8. "If you do go bring Herbal tea, pamprin and scented candles. It's too late for me but if you go prepared you might have a chance. " Also, be sure to wipe your feet on the way in, and for gawd's sake when you are finished, leave the damn seat DOWN! "Then they all asked me if their butts looked big in their jumpsuits." Of course the PC answer is "No, honey, but your rig sure looks smaller"
  9. "no probs went to the gear shop and roberts your mothers brother. " Au contraire, Robert is the Kit Store owner... You need to ask any of the instructors what the little knife is for, they will tell you all about it! "from what i'd heard headcorn wasn't the greatest place" You will hear good things and bad things about every DZ, its just the nature of things, the only true way to find out is to visit the places and make your own mind up. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 12. Dave your into choonz and stuff.... This one is about Gallipoli. Its traditional song, but if you fancy busting that geetar out of an evening, the Pogues did a nice version of it. "The band played waltzing matilda" Now when I was a young man I carried me pack And I lived the free life of the rover. From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback, Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over. Then in 1915, my country said, "Son, It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done." So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun, And they marched me away to the war. And the band played "Waltzing Matilda," As the ship pulled away from the quay, And amidst all the cheers, the flag waving, and tears, We sailed off for Gallipoli. And how well I remember that terrible day, How our blood stained the sand and the water; And of how in that hell that they call Suvla Bay We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter. Johnny Turk, he was waitin', he primed himself well; He showered us with bullets, and he rained us with shell -- And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell, Nearly blew us right back to Australia. But the band played "Waltzing Matilda," When we stopped to bury our slain, Well, we buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs, Then we started all over again. And those that were left, well, we tried to survive In that mad world of blood, death and fire. And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive Though around me the corpses piled higher. Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head, And when I woke up in me hospital bed And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead -- Never knew there was worse things than dying. For I'll go no more "Waltzing Matilda," All around the green bush far and free -- To hump tents and pegs, a man needs both legs, No more "Waltzing Matilda" for me. So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed, And they shipped us back home to Australia. The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane, Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla. And as our ship sailed into Circular Quay, I looked at the place where me legs used to be, And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me, To grieve, to mourn and to pity. But the band played "Waltzing Matilda," As they carried us down the gangway, But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared, Then they turned all their faces away. And so now every April, I sit on my porch And I watch the parade pass before me. And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march, Reviving old dreams of past glory, And the old men march slowly, all bones stiff and sore, They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war And the young people ask "What are they marching for?" And I ask meself the same question. But the band plays "Waltzing Matilda," And the old men still answer the call, But as year follows year, more old men disappear Someday, no one will march there at all. Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda. Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me? And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabong, Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me? copyright © Eric Bogle -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 13. Google Gallipoli Dave, it was a British military fuck up during WW1, where the price was paid by the Aussie and Kiwi troops. A hideous waste of life. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 14. "Hmmm do you mean that the 4-6 and the 6-6 cables CAN'T carry power? " Only the 6-6 can carry power, as Andy said, the 4-6 is an 'adaptor'. "I had a laptop with an interface card (sold it to Henny ) with 2 6-pin ports. Now I have a Vaio with one 4-pin port. " I'm not sure if any PCMCIA cards, such as you might get on a laptop, actually output power without adding another adaptor (transformer). But I've no doubt it worked fine talking to devices that had their own power supply. Otherwise Henny would not have bought it..
  15. He is a cutie! Hmm, two year's old today, hmmm, I'm sure I can get Mininac to play this game.....He played along with the 'I'm watching the Flyboyz' thing a while back..... 17. "The flyaway brakes were a good idea. If the brakline failed in use - it normally happened at the loop - and in that case your canopy would remain steerable. " Don't flyaway brakes also limit one possible cause of a lineover? I heard a lot of Base rigs were set up like this for that reason? No I'm not stalking you T, -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. "I have put part of my hand through the excess steering lines reaching for the toggles, before, and had my hand get caught by the steering line when I unstowed my brakes." I've done this on my Spectre, resulting in a brake line knot which needed a cutaway to resolve it. Spectres have deep brake sttings, but it was basically down to shoddy stowing of the brakes...My bad. I fooled so feelish when I landed.... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 22. "direct you near London." Hmmm, sorry Raeford person, not many USPA dropzones in the UK... Fungi, go to the BPA website listed on Mick's post, it has a map which has clickable links to all the UK DZs along with phone numbers etc. If you contact your local DZ they will be able to tell you costs, and age limits etc. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 23. 4 pin to 4 pin is what you probably want. The 6 pin ones can carry power, and are often seen on interface cards, and external devices such as burners and hard drives. I've never seen a 6 pin socket on a camera, or vcr deck to date. They are different size and shape to each other. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
