"Are you likely to fall out, or can most people hold themselves in if they know they are detached?" This is quite common, the leg strap slipping around, a butt strap will prevent it. On hire gear just tie a pull-up between the straps, ask a freeflier to show you. I've never seen or heard of a leg strap failing, or as you suggest coming disconnected mid flight. So the following is kinda what I might expect to see in this very rare situation.... I'm not sure if you'd fall out, but the harness being unevenly loaded would make steering the canopy awkward to say the least. You may even spin up the main on deployment. Which might be difficult to kick out. A quick cutaway to a reserve might help, but if it spins up you are on your last chance.... Edit to add...I don't like B12's either (this is the name for those hook things you described). -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "The Revolutionary War. You know the one, when we just didn't like your tea." Who ever said you need a degree?

"I'm currently stuck back in the UK, with nothing but my rig and camera helmet, working 12hr shifts 7days a week and trying hard to save enough money to do about 400-500 dives and get into tandem/camera." Dayumm, if you had an engineering degree, and a wee bit of experience, you could be clearing enough to buy a complete rig a month, or a camera a week..... We are howling for experienced engineers right now. Och well "chaque un a son gout" as they say across the channel.... The only thing a qualification actually gives you is choice, it looks like you gave up that choice by choosing your life...ironic really. But you have to chase your dreams...good luck. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Best over the counter PC notebook computer for Premiere?
nacmacfeegle replied to Deuce's topic in Photography and Video
Try here http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&category=1&BypassCookie=true I use an old P111 700 IBM Notebook, which is pretty robust, it serves as my work pooter when I'm away/offshore/in nasty places....Its never let me down in the last 4 years or so. But I can't speak for its more modern brothers. I might consider going with external drives, DVD burners etc, in a Firewire case then you can hot swap them in and out of your home based system easy peasy. As long as you have a 'standard' OHCI card in your home PC. Transferring large amounts of data and humungous files then becomes very simple. If I were to do it all again, I'd probably opt for this type of setup. Actually, I'd probably opt for a more fruity variety of number cruncher, but I'm a Windows man too, its all I know.... -
The dropped frames problem means that there is a bottleneck somewhere on your setup. Can you connect the hard drive on its own and test the read/write speed (the raptest should be able to do this for you), then you will know if your hard drive is set up effectively. The hard drive should be capable of sustained read write in excess of 5MB/sec. I have a Maxtor drive with 2 firewire ports built in, they are the 6 pin (larger type), are you sure your not looking at a 6-pin firewire and mistaking it for USB 2.0? Its a silly question but I have to ask it... On my Laptop I have an ADS Pyro PCMCIA card, the dongle that comes with it has two firewire conns, both work fine, as does the drive with a camera attached via the spare port. Finally what type of laptop are you using? There are known isues with some laptops, Cajones knows about these, try PMing him. If all else fails, try here... http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&category=1&BypassCookie=true -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. It might be cheaper getting a firewire hub, but I've never seen one in the flesh... It would be best to see if your system has any bottlenecks before spending money, hence my suggestion to use raptest to benchmark it. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. What make/model of ext hard disc are you using? Most Ext hard discs have 2 firewire connections. USB is not fast enough for full DV transfer, (USB 2.00 is reported as being fast enough but I 've not played with it yet) Go here http://www.canopus.com/US/products/free_utilities/pm_free_utilities.asp download raptest and run it on your system. It will actually check system compliance for a card called a raptor, but it doubles as a good system checker. Its a good idea to shut everything that you don't need, use a free application called enditall http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Reviews/r91.html Also check you premiere settings, ensure you are writing data to the F/W disc and not to your laptop drive. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Disconnect your RSL and pull on it. It will also deploy the reserve even if there's a pebble or something stuck in the ripcord channel." As part of my 'preflight' check, I ensure my cable is free and running in the housing by 'tweaking' the slack from the pin end. Basically I stick my pinky under the cable next to the pin and give it a light wiggle while keeping an eye on the other end of the cable, the cable has a little slack in it to allow for harness flexing, so all I do is wiggle it until I see the little cable end ferrule/ball moving. Then I know the cable will be free. All you have to do is make sure you don't dislodge the pin. I also check my handle retaining velcro by pulling the handle free of the housing. I do this at the start of the day's jumping and if I have had a tumble. I also do this as part of a mandatory flight line check on others. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
