  1. I know who you were talking to. But, you insinuate to those that dont agree with you that they want to polute and destroy the planet. Sorry, but you called called on that bull shit Well, you insinuate that people who don't agree with you are delusional and crazy. I feel I am neither, so I guess I'm calling you on that bullshit. Do you see how this is unproductive and silly? I guess what i still don't understand is why you are so vehemently opposed to practicing ecological responsibility. I really don't understand, and i'm not saying that to be condescending or pedantic...i truly don't understand. Perhaps our world views are just too different, i'm not sure. 2. wow marc, you assume i was talking to you. I really wasn't. And i wasn't insinuating anything except that I think it's the right thing to do to live and act responsibly toward our environment. I actually dislike the way replies are listed on this board for this very reason. I'm replying to the thread in general, but it has to put a name there. but if you want to feel guilty, go ahead. 3. Oh, i dunno, when i have my AC set to 85 degrees and it still runs most of the day all summer...i'd say it's pretty fuckin' hot. Honestly, i'm past the point of arguing about global warming and moving on to arguing about general responsibility and long-term thinking. Do i want to leave the earth fucked up for my children but easy and cheaper for me, or leave it a better place? The decision is easy for me (and i don't even have kids yet!). And I don't do it because of global warming or whatever. i do it because it's the right thing to do. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  4. ...land of the fruits and nuts! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  5. Heh...i agree with the Palinites here on this one...and call me Bill Clinton. I tried pot and didn't inhale. Because i couldn't. Oh, i tried! Smoking anything makes me sick, though, so i tend to avoid it. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  6. still missing the point. If it's OK to make that judgment, then shouldn't it apply to others in the same situation? anything else is hypocrisy, which is the charge being leveled at Bill O'Reilly in this segment. Oh, and to answer your question, I know a lot of pinhead parents. Apparently, the Palins are some of them, as are the Spears. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  7. Perhaps not. But i can tell you without a doubt that the opposite is absolutely true. for those who have trouble with reading, i mean that poor grammar and punctuation make an argument LESS persuasive. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  8. who cares what the intent of getting pregnant was (pretty judgmental to assume that spears' intent by getting pregnant was to get publicity). My guess is Spears didn't intent ANYTHING when she messed around with her boyfriend. But that isn't the point! The point is, Bill O'Reilly thinks it's perfectly OK to blame one set of parents and judge them as "pinheads" but it's not ok to do the same for another set. The point of my posting this is meant as a warning to not take what you see each day at face value, and to dig deeper and do some research. too bad most Americans won't do that. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  9. I think you completely missed the point of the vid. as a matter of fact, he was almost sympathetic to Palin herself at the end. Who he was calling out were the pundits themselves and their blatant self-contradictions. Bill wasn't comparing Spears to the Palins. He was judging one person and their family for teen pregnancy and giving another a pass. Or are you saying that's OK? because the Spears are "poor white trash" and the Palins are not? Where's that elitism thread? LOL Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  10. Not sure if it's been posted, but let me just say that sometimes Jon Stewart hits one out of the park. http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=184086&title=sarah-palin-gender-card What does it say that a political satire show is one of the few places that actually does, you know, hard-hitting journalism? All you get on the major networks is pundits who very obviously contradict themselves. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  11. Of course, i think your candidate would have a terrible time getting elected today in the age of television and internet and instant information. Same with FDR...honestly, would the American people be able to elect a physically handicapped man to the presidency if he was splashed all over TV all the time? I would bet not. It's really too damned bad. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  12. All depends on the platform. Of course, i know who you're describing...which would influence my answer ;) Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  13. can we get hot oil dripping over her exposed breasts? Only if the man making dinner is shirtless Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  14. well, "sex sells" is only one side of this equation. The other side, and the stuff that i'm actually MORE uncomfortable with, is the typical ad for something like, oh, dishwasher detergent or some kind of packaged dinner. those ads ALWAYS show a woman/mother cooking or cleaning. Never a man/father doing those things. And on the flip side, lawnmower and car repair commercials ALWAYS show a man mowing the lawn or changing the oil, never a woman. I would say those are worse because rather than being ridiculous and obvious, the sexism is more subtle and insidious. I wouldn't say *ban* them so much as encourage companies to equalize out their commercials...show the father making dinner some of the time (hell, in my family growing up my dad did most of the cooking). Show a woman changing the oil with a Fram filter... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  15. Can we make a club? with numbers and everything? we can have AE numbers, add them to our sigs and everything. Billvon AE #1 I'll sign on for #2! Who's with me! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  16. ah bill, stealing my spotlight. i was going to make a new thread based on the results of my other thread....but you arrogant elitist! you stole my thunder! I sincerely hope that people recognize this for what it is. one already did not.... By the way...i *want* my president to be "elite". I don't want some stupid schmuck leading the country. I want someone smarter, more compassionate, more understanding, and more qualified than I am. This whole "everyman" concept is a huge stinking pile of shit, IMHO. I don't want an everyman to lead the country, i want Superman! ok, that's a bit much, but you get my drift. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  17. A common theme i see recurring in many threads here in SC is the "elitism" claim. Someone, somewhere in the threads, will mention elitism, usually with a negative connotation. Often we talk about divisions in society, though usually they have better definitions, such as economic status, regional or ethnic divisions, etc. But these cries of "elitism" have me puzzled and seeking a more concrete definition, or at least an idea of a consensus. So I have a few questions. Consider this a survey, of sorts. 1. What, in your opinion, is "elitism"? 2. If you consider elitism to be a negative thing, are there any people or groups of people you consider to be "elitist"? If so, who? and why? 3. Of those people/groups, are any of them in your opinion truly elite (meaning their supposed elitism is justified)? The questions are open-ended. It doesn't have to relate to anything discussed in SC so far. I don't care. I'm just trying to get a feel for where this particular attitude comes from, and more importantly, what it IS. This isn't necessarily a political thread, more of a survey of SC participants. I don't see the subject as particularly controversial on it's own merits, but I figured this would be the best audience for it. I'll answer a little later. Thanks. 18. Indeed! From infoplease.com And from a recent political speech: I'll leave the analysis up to the reader. Blues, Dave Absolutely...challenge the liberal status quo that exists today. You DO realize that doing so would make you.........LIBERAL? According to the above definition, at least. Careful what you wish for... 19. lol, yeah, i usually don't answer at all...the only reason the guy even bothered is because my husband happened to be home and outside in the garage. point is moot now, since we live in the boonies now and no one comes to the door. 20. Actually...we did. But only because we could physically SEE the truck with the logos all over it parked across the way. The case was sealed and pre-packaged. And it was actually a good deal. The nice thing is each steak is individually wrapped, so we can use what we need when we need it. So yeah, if it's from a reputable company. Not if it's some dude with a cooler in his pickup :P Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  21. I no how 2 rd slng & txt msg spk, ne1 can c u need 2 ths days. But that doesn't mean that we should let the proper way degrade at the expense of the slang. My point here is this: slang is just fine, but when kids or even adults know NO OTHER WAY to speak or write, that's where the trouble lies. You know, I'm not sure why I'm arguing this anymore. To be perfectly honest, being an elitist when it comes to this issue isn't such a bad thing in my mind. Yes, I am proud that I know how to speak and write properly, and i know that I will go farther in this world because of it. Yes, if someone speaks or writes like the examples in this thread, I DO tend to prejudge their intelligence level. As will that job interviewer. Sorry, that's the way it is. If one doesn't want people to think one is an uneducated idiot, don't write or speak like one. Harsh? Maybe. True? Definitely. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  22. Happy to oblige... Did you ever realize that much of what passes as "standard", "educated" English today grew out of non-standard uses perhaps only a century or two ago--or less. And that if educated folk from the 18th century heard us all speaking today, it would sound to them like the characters of Idiocracy sound to us? Again, my point is this: Perhaps we should use language more as a tool to communicate ideas, and less as a tool to justify one's tendency to judge and separate. The day one can score a job on wall street after answering an interviewer's questions in the manner posted in this thread, or in Idiocracy, then i will possibly change my tune. As of now, you won't see it. And kids turning in papers written in "leet speak" or text message "language" because they don't know how to write any other way is NOT beneficial to society, whatever you may say. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  23. Excellent. Let's do that. One could then argue that proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation should be stressed in schools. So we come to the original question again: why is a substandard way of speaking (and writing, i might add) becoming more prevalent? Is it not being taught in schools? or if it is taught, is it not being stressed as important? I would argue, for the VERY reason you just stated, that proper speaking is extremely important. So why then is someone who despairs the collapse of the english language seen as an "elitist?" I would say I am just arguing for the greater good of society. Why is arguing for the teaching and upholding of standards that are arguably of benefit to a person considered to be elitism? I would instead call it altruism. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  24. ok fine. I'll admit. MY opinion on this thread has nothing to do with race. Degradation of language and a culture of anti-intellectualism, IMHO, has nothing to do with race. Hell, some of the people who are the strongest perpetrators of this "education = elitism" attitude are Caucasian. As i said in a previous post, when *I* read the OP, race did NOT cross *my* mind. But please, by all means, continue to tell me what I am *truly* thinking, I must have been mistaken before. By the way, if you are calling me a racist because I prefer to read or listen to articulate writing or speech, well, then, we have a different issue. Because then it would be YOU assuming that INarticulate speech or writing are dependent on race, not me. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  25. And yet, educated people still get called elitists for desiring to uphold standards. I was merely pointing out misaltas' post as an example. Not to mention he played right into my prediction on the first page of this thread. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
