If you can't land a tandem yourself you shoudn't be an TM.
cpoxon replied to camamel's topic in Instructors
Thick lines or thin? I've found Sigma's with "ropes" to be quite heavy, although that may be completely unrelated. It may be down to the age of the canopy or the fact that I've come from other lighter toggle pressure canopies such as the Hop 330, but that is my impression. In my nearly 500 tandems I have never once had a student help me with the flare, and I don't think it is necessary. I find the cultural differences odd. In the UK, I can't think of any tandem instructor who has the student assist them with the flare. We get them to help lift their legs up with their hands so that they are out of the way, enabling the instructor to get their feet down first. If you are getting your student to help you with the flare, how are you getting them to lift their legs out of the way, or do you try to do some sort of coordinated running landing? Nick, how high are you getting when you go back up in the first part of the video? This JVX is sail material? Does that offer any advantage over "normal" ZP? i.e. more lift when popping back up? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

When I went (over three years ago though), they provided suits. It was quite a baggy one as well as I weighed over 90 kgs at the time. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Yeah, me too. Since "helmets" are required in the UK, all tandem students, and nearly all their instructors (if they haven't gone for some sort of shell) where them over here. Mind you, I'd never worn one until my tandem course when I had over 900 jumps! Now that I've got one, I have worn it for RW, when I've been travelling and didn't have room in my luggage for a hard shell, and on hop and pops. Somebody finally invented a packing machine? Good to see there is still a use for clamps! How big is that slider and how many grommets?! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Original thread (before video was released) is here. That's where I'm directing the traffic from the link on SkydivingMovies to so if the discussion could be kept in there it would be great. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Chris Lyall. Saved a parachuting member of a middle Eastern military group (UAE?) after a freefall collision. Can't find any online reference though! Also Andy Peckett, a British ex-pat I believe, was named Skydiver of the Year 1993 for saving an unconcious Maurizio Brambilla in mid-air over Vichy in France on August 11th 1993. I want to jump your tandem rig! Our Vectors weigh in at 50-55lbs, and then there's the student harness... Yeah, I was being a bit generous to achieve the 1.25 loading. Assuming 55 lbs takes it up to 1.35. Mind you, don't Jumpshack make a 38lb tandem set up? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

And the method by which the camera and the recording device are connected. What ones are those? How much do they cost? How portable are they? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Yes, but it's analogue isn't it? Via th AV-in? Not digitally via the firewire port? http://www.sports-cameras.co.uk/AccRecordingDevices.shtml Doesn't that compress the data? If so, then the quality isn't going to be as good as a regular DV camera and certainly not broadcast quality. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Whilst I realise this completely contradicts the point you are trying to make, are there any manufacturers of tandem equipment out there who are putting hard housings in their risers? Playing devil's advocate, where would you draw the line? Would you like to see a maximum wingloading for tandem students? We have it in the UK for static-line and AFF students, so why not tandems? Something along the lines of a maximum of a Class 3 (Mid Range) rating (1-1.25 lb/sq ft) according to Icarus? I'm 168 lbs. My dropzone has a 224 lb limit for tandem students. I regularly jump a Hop 330. Assuming 20lb for gear that gives me a wing loading of 1.25 which is about the same as 500 lbs under a 400. There are a lot smaller instructors out there too (as well as a lot larger ones!) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

That's as maybe, but don't they connect to the camera via analogue means, which results in a degradation? I have used bullet cams before and am a big fan of them, but they would be better if you could wire them up digitally to Sony cameras. Are you recording digitally? From http://kgmb9.com/kgmb/display.cfm?storyID=9299 It's really bad that gear was stolen but this story is really confusing. It's probably just down to whuffo journalism and a student's excitement at cheating death. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Is it an unpacked jump? If so, since the body is less likely to be in a chest down position on inflation, having an unthreaded chest strap should in theory be more survivable? Not recommending it though! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
