  3. That's not a very good reason for not buying one. Most places expect you to have your own own equipment (accessories at least, initially) once you are off student status, so that those who are more in need can make use of the loan equipment. Do you want to wear the sweaty ProTec, the ragged boiler suit, or jump the Manta for the rest of your skydiving career? So why should an altimeter be any different? What happens when you jump at a different dropzone? Not to mention that people tend not to look after stuff as well as if they owned it... 4. Actually, I may have been mistaken in my understanding of the term "sensitive". It was my belief that it related to the rate of change of display; it is very difficult to get a (correctly functioning) mechanical altimeter to display anomalous readings, whereas it is very easy to do so with altimeter watch style devices. On further research I came across this Definition of "Sensitive" Altimeters (Reference Section 91.205(d)(5) of the Federal Aviation Regulations) which is not the same thing and seems to relate to devices that (amongst other things) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  5. Not in the UK you wont. According to Section 6 (Equipment) Paragraph 4 (Instruments) Sub-Paragraph 4.2 of the British Parachute Association's Operation Manual Altimeter watches, such as the Suunto, are sensitive devices and therefore will fail a flight-line check if it is your only visual altimeter. Number 100 . . .

I didn't think people paid for your course Tom? Or are you talking generally? Whatever, it's an interesting idea. Could you end up paying people to take your course? :-) However, I think this will completely pass by the people who are in most need of the extra skills. With the prevelance of paying courses these days, and the ease of getting on one, there is the "money no object" mind-set of those in too much of a hurry to take the time to develop the skills that are going to save their lives. 8. I think then that I am interpolating from how I remember seeing some camera suits connect up (can't see any examples on the TonySuits.com gallery), the flash of red (shackle lanyard?), and the metallic colouring on the leg. Can you post a zoom in on that section from a hi res picture so I can see if it's what I thought I was seeing? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

  11. This page gives the impression that it is Hannes Arch in the picture since there is no mention of Uelli on that page or on the team page? Uelli used to have a website at www.sputnik.li with the same picture on but no more it would see, not even on

There was a big European Soccer match in Paris last night with lots of the fans with and without tickets congregating around the tower. I wonder if the timing of the jump was a coincidence? Bird Strike

How did you alter your flight/glide for deployment? Your scenario implies that the bird was coasting or tracking you closely, so your flight would have had to have altered drastically to catch out a bird with eyesight far superior to a human's and flying characteristics that can seemingly out accelerate gravity. The falcons that flew with Leo, Andy and Dave were in a full dive to catch them and when they are soaring on thermals they don't appear to have a great deal of forward speeds; both of these profiles are generally incompatible with normal wingsuit flight. So I'm finding it hard to believe that the bird was intentionally close to you (it would also have to have begun it's flight earlier on and higher up to do so - how high do they generally fly?) unless there is evidence to the contrary. Despite the big sky theory I think it is more likely that this is a random convergence. Does anyone know how good an eagle's field of vision is, specifically with regards to things above it? Plus, I think this should be in the Wingsuit forum rather than Incidents. Glad you weren't too badly hurt. Hope the bird made it too. I hate it when flying creatures get hurt. 25. But is it though? Belly to earth you only really have one person's surface area providing most of the drag and that can easily get to 180 mph drogueless. Whereas head down, you have two (in profile at least) plus the rig. Does anyone have any empirical results? For the cameraman to stay with it reasonably closely and in enough control to safely take those pictures I'm guessing that it was approximate head down speeds. I'm not suggesting it's a good idea; just curious... Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
