BPA Inssurance Vote. All members should read.
cpoxon replied to bigway's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm glad the BPA have taken the step to make the membership aware of this. I'd heard, as I'm sure many of the membership have, that this was on the cards, since it came up at an open meeting (although the way the minutes are approved, that haven't yet appeared on the website). I'm sure the membership at large would be have been quite upset if this had been sprung on them at the AGM. I'm also glad to see that people are not taking this opportunity to bash the BPA (and I hope the will continue to do so). Can somebody clarify the concept of reserves for me? Basically they are the pots of money put aside to cover any claims? If so, how big are they and are they capped in any way? I'm trying to work out what the worst case scenario is here. I would imagine the absolute worse case is that the current insurance company do not quote for the next year and the Association are unable to find alternative insurance. Without insurance, we are unable to skydive. The second worse case is that the claims are as big as they can be with the insurers still prepared to give us a renewal quotation, and are paid out. In this scenario, are the current insurers able to at least give a rough estimate as to how much it would cost? If it is something ridiculous like several hundred pounds, this will drive away a large proportion of the membership leaving those who are able to pay shouldering an even bigger share of the cost. Whilst I don't see an alternative, and would wish to trust the Council and Staff to achieve the best value for the membership, voting for a blank cheque doesn't seem right to me. "The Shadow Knows" - picture in Skydiving, January 2007
cpoxon replied to cpoxon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Have you seen the picture on page 4 of this month's skydiving (of GTAVercetii's father??)? The picture looks a bit odd to me; it looks like it's been taken from halfway down the aircraft, yet the point is made in print that it was taken by the pilot. Co-pilot on board? Telephoto? Help decide? Unless I've missed something (and please correct me if I'm wrong), there's no decision to make. Are you saying you think they are in the wrong place? If you are, your opinions would be best voiced in Suggestions and Feedback. Anyway, it's not up to the mods, it's up to one person only. I think I can speak for the rest of the mods when I say that we don't want them in Incidents (read the forum rules) or General (they aren't questions and can't be learnt from or raise discussion). New forum? I don't think that really makes sense when compared with how the rest of the forums are laid out, so I think the Bonfire is the best place. Just been told of a radio report that the roof has blown of Airkix?! No, not a testament to the power of the fans in the tunnel, but that we are suffering 40-60 mph winds here in the UK at the moment. Hope it's not too serious! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

It would be good if there was an index or the pictures were posted latest first, so that they don't all have to be skipped through to see the newest one (I realise that I could increment the index in the http://www.birdmantopgun.com/gallery.php?picture= URL but I'm lazy) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Flying From UK to Spain With A Rig ?

Fair enough :-) At least it wasn't your intention to carry it on that way. Go on, how much? Under a kilo, jobsworth, over a kilo, fair game I say. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live -
Flying From UK to Spain With A Rig ?

Check out BASE stash bags. Basically, Nylon bags with shoulder straps, that add zero bulk. I have a really nice one made by JNI that has draw strings over the surface to decrease he surplus slack. I wasn't talking about checking rigs in, just covering up/bagging rigs that one carries on, but since you mentioned it, I wouldn't rely on travel insurance to cover my gear but have it itemised on my home contents insurance. What happens if you are forced to check in your gear and the airline looses it? There are plenty of sturdy, lightweight cases out there that offer more than enough protection. If you get turned back from security because they won't pass your rig, you day bag will most likely be on the plane at that point and they aren't going to unload it so you can get it out. Wearing your rig over your shoulders when boarding commercial airlines screams "look at me!" Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live -

Please don't do this. What is to be gained by doing this? It is only going to attract uneccessary attention. In the days of heightened tension when passengers are seemingly effecting the removal of other passengers because they are appear to be Muslim and are "acting suspiciously", why would you want to attract attention to yourself by not having your rig in a bag, not to mention the advantages of protecting your rig and having it contained if the airline or security requires you to check it in? No idea, but I would hazzard a guess that the person will be a kick ass skydiver like the rest of the team. Liz The answer will probably be on this website, when it works that is :-P Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Some Sigma hard pulls have been reported in the UK. From Item 5 (Incident/Injury Reports - Resume) the minutes from the 1st of June 2006 meeting of the British Parachute Association Safety and Training Committee meeting I only have about 15 jumps on Sigmas, all packed myself, but didn't have any stiff pulls. I met Cliff and did a couple of jumps with him at ZHills during Easter of 2003. The first jump we did is very memorable for me as it was one of the best, most fun jumps I'd ever done. Just one of those jumps where everything flows and just works, despite my lesser experience. It came together with very little planning and the funny thing is when we actually tried to do a similar thing on the next jump, it didn't work nearly as well. Attached is capture from the video. Marco, your posts have been incredibly moving, touching and funny. Your friendship, grief and Cliff's character are so tangible. My thoughts go out to you and all those affected by this tragedy, especially his family, his girlfriend, his friends, as well as Jay and Kristen. I hardly knew Cliff, but he is unforgettable.
