Flight Line check requirements (Was:) Fatality - Bridlington U.K.
cpoxon replied to cpoxon's topic in Safety and Training
I've discovered tandem instructors on flight line without their AAD switched on, when they thought they were. 290 jumps or less is not "a lot" less experienced. I take exception with people who don't think the rules apply to them. What's the problem with getting your B Certificate? I hope you are not jumping camera with an A Certificate, contrary to Paragraph 6 (Cameras) of Section 6 (Equipment) of the Ops Manual? But this is all off topic. Perhaps one of the Incidents mods could move it to S&T? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live -

so in order to check an A Certificate parachutist complies with this it must be visually checked according the the Ops Manual. This becomes problematic as novices buy gear that has the control head in the back pad. Yes, especially in the UK where the Teardrop is a popular container. You don't have to be an instructor to carry out a flight line check, just have obtained the JM1 grading (see sub-para 6.1) Depending on the length of the chest strap, it can be done without having to take the rig of as such. Difficult to say because I only jump at a few dropzones in the UK, but if I am checking someone who I don't know, I ask them what Certificate they are and check their AAD if they have one and are A. I would say it is one of the lesser known requirements for checking though as it is a more recent addition to the ops manual. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live -

I wouldn't mind a small amount of clarification on this myself. At my DZ (and how I have always understood it) A-licence jumpers need to have their AAD and top pin checked before emplaning, B and above don't. A quick flick through the Ops manual brings up section 3-2.3 which says the JM is responsible for ensuring all parachutists below B-lic have been checked. So - what is the actual BPA requirement, do A-lic jumpers need their top pin and AAD visually checked? Checking the top-pin is not specified by the Ops manual but then neither are other flight line checks such as having your chest strap done up or your three rings assembled correctly, but then the need for helmet, alti and knife is specified in the Ops Manual. Section 6 (Equipment) Para 5 (Automatic Activation Devices) of the BPA Operations Manual states, so in order to check an A Certificate parachutist complies with this it must be visually checked according the the Ops Manual. Congratulations on getting the TSR but commiserations for not getting the sequential. Sounds like you had a great team and a great event and a good chance of getting the sequential if you'd had the weather! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Thanks for the update Jim. What height are you jumping from? Around 20k I suspect if it's anything like Z-Team. 6 jumps from that height a day is hard core. Good luck! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

I totally agree... I was just seeing how many people who might blindly buy into my claim... Some might call that a troll, which can get you in trouble around here! Me too. Paralog combines the two lots of data quite nicely, however I've never got around to doing it because my eTrex is a bit cumbersome compared with the Forerunner style GPS units around these days. But it's certainly piqued my interest again. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

You yourself said and I think this is the case in the graph that you posted. Your 74 mph is defintely a spike since it is a single point with much higher speeds around it, much like those people who think they can go really fast when they have a peak over 200 mph on their ProTrack. It really needs to be a sustained trend such as the plots that Peter and I posted before I would be happy claiming achieving speeds of 74 mph. I agree, you are wrong. There is no way in hell that someone is slowing down to 70/80mph without a wingsuit. Anyone who says so is either lying or fooling themselves. Digital logging altimeters show speeds that slow sometimes, but it's only due to fluctuations in air pressure caused by variable airflow and burble around the unit. Here you go. Here are some graphs from jumps during the recent sequential record in Z-hills. In 1923 there is 13 seconds between 78 and 91 where the sustained fall rate is in the mid 80s and you can see the speed bleeding off from 120 in the previous 17 seconds. In 1928 you can see the speed decreasing over 28 seconds to a minimum of 77.5mph. Unfortunately I don't have any data from World Team, where I was in the first group breaking off tracking for even longer, due to a problem with my Neptune which required it to go back to the facotry :-( I'm 5' 11" and weigh about 192 lbs with gear and lead. Of the 479 entries on skydivingfatalities.info where the gender is known, 78 of them are female ~ 16%. That's pretty consistent. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

See here, although I was only on a couple of them and wasn't on the 3 plane one. :-( Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

I did one jump in it. I thought it was going to be difficult to fly (due to size of leg wing and the wide leg stance) and Nick saying the arm needed to curl, but I found it surprisingly easy. I was more aware of the Mach1's leg wing when I was flying that. I'm not sure how they compare though. My natural flying style is quite floaty and the Rigor Mortis seemed to encourage me to fly like that and I had to work hard to get what seemed like siginificant forward speed, but I only did one jump on it so that may not be fair. Thanks for a great event guys. I'm sorry I didn't get to jump with you guys as much as I would have liked by I really enjoyed meeting all of you and jumping with you. Thanks to Rob & Kathy, Robi, Scott, Chuck, Grey Mike, Jeff and Matt (and anyone else I forgot) for all of their efforts. I'm sorry if I didn't get to say goodbye to some of you but I hope to see you all soon. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

And once again I miss the picture with the Brits. I'm beginning to think it's deliberate. I was saying where was Gareth. Where were you? Even Kallend was in the picture! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Here you go Jarno, try and keep your hand out of your pants! These aren't official Flock n Dock pictures, just some frames from some late in the day flocks that I've managed to jump on after being released from the big-ways. I've got to fly a Blade and a Mach1 so far, which has been very cool. Right, I've got to be up in 7 hours for a dirtdive so I'd better be off but these should be just in time for your morning you European you. This reminds me of Jason Krieg's death, when he and Bruce Cyphers were doing CRW during winter in strong upper winds and landed in a lake 200 yards from shore. The water temperature was almost identical (42F ~ 5 C). Bruce was wearing a wetsuit and survived but Jason wasn't. Perhaps people who are jumping in similar situations might like to consider wearing a wetsuit. BSBD Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
