  1. Andy Scott and Caroline Allen gave a presentation about th 400-way at last weekends British Parachute Association Annuanl General Meeting. It was quite heavily focussed on sector 11 but I'm sure it has a lot of general stuff that would be of use to you. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  2. Very interesting. You must have been doing a head-down dive to be at 170 mph for most of the dive? And then you opened at about 3-grand and the helmet popped off? It looks like the helmet decelerated from 170 mph to about 50 in just 8 seconds, and then remained at 50 mph until impact. Neat graph. Thanks for sharing it. Pretty much, yes. Found a previous post which had an even better one: from a ProTrack from Didier Moinel Delande who was training for a Speed Skydiving jump when he lost his Oxygn. 200 mph decceleration in 10 seconds Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  3. I came across this story the other day about two 16-year olds from Florida who did a static-line and tandem jump in Georgia which I thought was unusual (especially as they jumped from 55 and 95 thousand feet! :-P) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

  10. Erm, I haven't been on council for a few years! Or are you just suggesting that I might like to write the article! :-P Actually, it's a good idea. It has been done occassionally before and is probably time for another. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

    Carnage Video

I wouldn't share (viewing) with anyone unless they really need to see it and they can be trusted with it (physically). Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

    Carnage Video

Yeah, Dave removed it. That sort of stuff isn't really the sort of thing we want on public access, is it? Please keep it to yourself otherwise one day it will end up on YouTube. having all that carnage in one place isn't going to do us a lot of favours in the eyes of the public. I think even in our community it is questionable, although it does have some merits. If it's the video Yuri put together recently (and has issued some updates in the past), then it was already out there and if you felt that you needed to see it there were ways of achieving that. It worked pretty well. Just like BASE, it shouldn't be presented on a plate, you should do a little work for it. Also, I would think that if Yuri wanted it to be publically downloadable, he would have uploaded it himself. What say you Yuri? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  13. Historically, no more than 10-15% of the membership take part in voting (despite the chance of winning one free membership per 1000 valid votes received - we've never ever had a 1000 voters since I've been a member, but they still give away one drawn at random). I would hope this would increase if there was opportunity to vote electronically as we'll as via the post. We also get a large proportion of spoiled votes. Whether these are mistakes (we have a slightly complicated voting card) or whether they are protest votes, I hope this would also decrease after the move to internet voting. And then some years, we don't even get 15 candidates for the 15 seats, so we don't even have a vote! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  14. Thanks Matt. was discssing this off-line last night and came up with the same ideas as you. The main sticking point is authentication; if we wanted to get something up running now would it be good enough to authenticate with the information we have already? The BPA membership runs 1st of April until the 31st of March, for everybody in order that we can set our membership and insurance (ha!) fees, so I would imagine that the renewal forms are being prepared now. 15. Gary, the BPA already has a membership database, but it is set up mostly for office use with no real member authentication (ignoring the membercheck on the website which only requires surname and date of birth). What I meant by overly simplistic is the idea of 'just' adding some decent authentication as well as the voting mechanism, especially when you are dealing with committees that only meet once every 2 months and outsourcing the work to a third party. Oh, and the BPA does send out a monthly email but it's only a list of the upcoming events. You already get a regular update, it's called the magazine. :-P Seriously though, there would be an overlap. what with the important stuff that's on the website and the mag what would you like to see in an email list? 16. What would you have done if you had been turned back from security? What if it is stolen from your home/car/dropzone/holiday rental car/holiday rental accomodation? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  17. Whilst I feel Gary is being overly simplistic, I wonder how sophisticated such a system needs to be. What information would you be happy supplying about yourself that the BPA knows about that is good enough to identify you. Surname, DOB and membership number I would say. Maybe even FAI number. I think address is to liable to error with differences in the way it can be presented. Combine that with IP address of the applicant to identify any multiple/fraudulant/odd votes and I think that is good enough. http://www.bpa.org.uk/membercheck.php Any member can use it if you know the surname and date of birth. And I note with interest that the same system has been implemented in the Classifieds so that only current BPA members can contact advertsers. But yes, there is a BPA membership database which could possibly be utilised. I just had a quick look online to see if there was any suitable voting systems that could be implemented quickly, easily intagrated with our current database and cheaply (less than the cost to mail each of the 5,000 members at the cost of a second-class stamp and stationary - ~£1500). The only one I came up with was VoteNet but it gave no idea of price and didn't appear to be easy to integrate. Edit: The Chair of the Development committee has expressed his interest in electronic voting in the most recent council minutes (item 66/06). Buzzkill.

Are you talking about the post titled "..." with the a single exclamation mark in the body, that was followed up with a bunch of equally pointless posts? That got recycled unsurprisingly (it wasn't me) but I don't think it was personal. Congratulations though JP! Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  23. Yes, and Development no less, but I'm afraid my memory is vague will see if I have any old paperwork tomorrow. One thing I will say is that I think the BPA's reserve is different (i.e. separate) from the insurer's reserves. I think the confusion comes from the idea that has been mentioned in the past that the BPA could use its reserve (~£1M?) to insure ourselves if we can no longer secure insurance. And with regards to the insurers reserves, I just found this quote from the Chairman's speech last year Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  24. One is member on member swooping accident claim and the other is the injury to a static line student at Netheravon, which left her paralysed. Bryn I think you are correct about the static line student, but if we are thinking about the same member on member swooping accident, that happened several years ago whereas Keiran's letter refers to "new" claims, so I don't think it's that one? 25. Perhaps, and that was a consideration I also had, but the shot seems to be fairly central, although slightly to the left, and would have been quite obtrusive? Have you seen the picture yet Bill? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
