  1. I was out exactly 1 month for a dislocated L shoulder. The DZO wouldn't let me jump until I could do a couple of chin-ups in front of him to prove I could flare... circa '84 I was out 3 months with a broken tail bone (6am and a ground full of dew... Cochrans... no wind... feet slid right out from under my ass) circa '86 Currently reading the boards while I wait for my Ortho appt tomorrow. Out a couple of months nursing a bruised lower back. Out for numerous short periods of time for way too many stupid 'oops' moments. Who says 'Pain is an excellant teacher'???? Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  2. I agree with Bigway... However, I would like to point out that if the container fits well and has an appropriately sized reserve, it MAY be worth it to pick the rig up. I'm not suggesting jumping the main. Put that in your closet (for a couple of hundred jumps) or sell it and buy an appropriate main. As always though.... Talk with your instructors before doing anything, consult riggers prior to buying, and regard any advice from these boards with a grain or two of salt. 3. What a crock of shit! If you really feel this way, may I suggest re-educating yourself to the realities of the sport/lifestyle and by all means tell us why you have a suicidal deathwish? Rationally, if you know an activity will kill you, then why do it unless you have a desire for the inevitable results? Yes, skydiving is dangerous; a quick peak at the incident reports tell us this. In addition, there's an unknown number of 'minor' incidents that never make it to the official incident reports (bruises, sprains, compound fractures, etc, etc, etc...). This being said, there are a lot of 'legal' sports (some mainstream, some not) that are just as capable of injuring/killing you with or without any help from the participant. As far as 'justifing the safety of skydiving to ourselves'... well, we ALL do that! (...even you my friend, and if you haven't then you had better get on it!). Do the risks and consequences of participation in this sport justify the benefits and rewards? Everyone has their own answer. Skydiving never has been, and never will be for everyone. Can skydiving kill you? Of course it can. Will it if you stay in the sport long enough? No. I will, however, admit that the likelyhood of injury (of some flavor) at some point in your skydiving career is pretty high. But personally, I refuse to sit on my ass watching TV while others experience what makes life worth living. YMMV Have a nice day.
  4. Skydiver: You do a mr. bill with the hottest hottie on the plane and save the day... There.... fixed it for ya! Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  5. I'm not an instructor, so add some salt... I have to disagree with wind being a valid reason to downsize. If, a student is backing up under canopy then perhaps the winds are too high for the student to be jumping. I don't believe a student, or anyone for that matter, should downsize just because your going backwards under canopy with some winds. I have, on numerous occassions, flown and landed while flying backwards. If your proficient with your canopy its no big deal (I didn't say 'ideal'; there's a difference). If you can't safely land your canopy if you happen to be losing ground while facing into the wind (being blown backwards by high winds as a front is moving in after a CRW load...for example), then your not getting all the 'performance' out of the canopy and you haven't explored all the envelope of what the canopy can/can't do. You therefore, should probably reconsider the downsizing decision. YMMV. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...

  7. Good reasons: You want to be a member of the ultra-elite Titanium club, and you can't do that without having the metal under your skin and bolted to bone... You need an extended break from the sport: perfect opportunity to join the aforementioned club... It's too hard to pack a larger parachute... You really need the attention, and there's no better place to get attention and be talked about than on DZ.com... It's too difficult to handle a larger wing and it makes it impossible to swoop... Bigger is not always better: except with paychecks, boobies, and bottles. Bad reasons: Well...there really isn't any bad reasons to downsize. Nobody on this site knows what the fuck their talking about anyways. There's an unspoken conspiracy where those of us who have survived do our best to keep those of you with less experience totally clueless to the realities of this sport. It's not that we don't like you (even though we prolly don't), it's just that it makes it easier for us to maintain our 'Godlike' and 'Manly' status and image to all the whuffos. Really... 8. More importantly... if your incapacitated somehow (unconscious, broken arm, etc), then do you really want to be under a crotch rocket? Remember... all too often in this sport when bad shit happens it will keep getting worse until you come to a stop. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...

    THIS SUCKS!!!

Careful... I caught a couple of youthful African American males stealing a neighbors bike in college. Beat the shit out of one (if your going to pull a knife on someone, you should at least know how to open the fucker and use it...) and had the other cowering on the ground like a baby. I ALMOST went to jail for my efforts. The only reason I didn't was because: I insisted that he had a knife and pulled it on me so I was defending myself, and we found the knife near where the incident took place. Turns out they were 13/15 years old with a long wrap sheets... habitually released because they were minors. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...

Better yet... Format HD Install any flavor of Linux. Place Windows install disc in microwave on high for 2 minutes. Replace microwave if needed. Problem solved!
  11. And yet, at every DZ across the country (world) we encourage drinking by virtue of the Beer rule. Why is it perfectly fine to get shitfaced hammered on your alcohol of choice, but get 'accused' of hitting a joint at 10 pm (whether true or not), and your branded and shuned as the dreggs of society. To the boards in general: I personally don't care what others do on THEIR time. If I don't like it then I won't hang with ya... your loss. I would rather see someone spark up a fatty while sitting around the bonfire then watch em get stumbling drunk and acting like complete asshats. What fun jumpers do on their own time (when it doesn't interfere with jumping) is their business and I'm not qualified to judge them. What staff / instructors do is, IMHO, everybody's problem. They're the ones whose taken upon themselves the responsibility for the safety of their students. Along with that responsibility is (should be) the ethic that they will be of clear mind to do the job. alcohol or drugs, I make no distinction and it garners the same amount of respect from me. Now... having said all that... I buy my fair share of beer for the DZ. It's my choice whether to drink it or not, and I usually choose not to (I'd rather spend the funds on jumping versus lawyers, bail, insurance costs, etc.). ...and I'm always us for a safety briefing! So the next time your heading out to the car/rv/bushes/pea pit, give me a gently nudge and I'll happily tag along if I'm not already leading the way.
  12. Well he's not the only one... I was never much for number collecting back in the daze (Yeah, I'm kicking myself in the ass right about now...) and infact still have a handfull of apps that I just never sent off (4 stack, Falcon, SCS, SCR, etc...). Hell, the only reason I got my D license was so I wouldn't catch shit DZ hopping on my 9 month X-country vaca back in '87. :P As I recall though, the only place I really needed it was at the DC4 convention at Coolidge... 13. Ok...just got word that I need to go to Remshied, Germany for a business trip... So naturally I'm planning on making a jump or two if at all possible. So who out there can give me some info on what I need to know and/or do? I won't be taking my gear (it is a buss trip...) I will be taking my log book Valid USPA w/ D license Am willing to jump most anything gear wise... Costs involved for lift, gear rental, and ??? Any info, help, and/or pointers would be appreciated.
  14. Oh I don't know.... I'm at work and it suits me just fine!

  17. I'm partial to the idea of mandatory birth control (not condoms or BC pills though) for anyone and everyone receiving any kind of state aid or assistance. You want "your" money, get your shot... I'd also go for a program where they get paid cold hard cash for getting sterilized (V or TL)... it's a lot cheaper than the alternative. ...and why is it that we need a license to drive a car or catch a fish, but anyfuckingbody with the desire to drop their pants can be a parent??? 18. QuoteI don't remember siting sources or stating fact.Quote The problem is that there are up and coming (newbie) skydivers with more money than brains. They read whats posted here, assume it's gospel, and try it for themselves. The replies you've received are basically twofold...1) Don't make statements that are blatently false. This is the net, and the folks with experience will attempt to set the record straight before a fatality results. 2) If you don't know, ask. A question about the usefullness of this camera in skydiving would have been much better than stating what you did state. If the replies seem harsh, well.... get over it. Life is tuff... lose the skirt and grab a helmet. The experienced skydivers on these boards will do what they can to keep the sport safe and to try and keep folks from killing themselves. 19. I've blinked and lost a contact, on final no less. I just shut one eye and... well... I actually prefer to jump with my glasses on now. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...

  21. My son (7) has severe allergies and allergy induced asthma. At the first sign of him touching/ingesting something that his body doesn't like (such as grass, weeds, trees, dogs, cats, mammals, nuts, peanuts, or just about anything else containing atoms (or so it would seem)...) we dose him and watch for further changes. It def calms him down and makes him sleepy... Obviously, YMMV.
  22. Dose him with Benadryl... When he gets sleepy, put him to bed and enjoy the break. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  23. Personally, I'd rather bounce in front of my wife and kids than let them see me waste away from cancer or some other terminal illness. Been there... done that... I took care of my dad while he went from Superman to a frail sub-sub-100lb shadow of himself before the Lord decided it was time. That's when I 'really' learned that it's better to live your life to its fullest now because you just don't know what tommorrow brings... My wife and kids know my feelings and I think they actually understand it too. We were at the DZ yesterday, when my 7 yr old son saw the guy running manifest hobbling around on crutches. He asked me what happened to him and so I told him: He broke a couple of bones in his leg when he biffed a landing. My son looked at him again and said (I shit you not...) "At least he did it jumping!" Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
