  1. I've lived my share in the WPB/Jupiter area, and I'm done. It's fine, until you have kids. ...a whole different perspective to deal with. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...

  3. Been there, done that. Sucks to be you at the moment, and for the next few months. I broke mine once upon a time (yes, skydiving related) and was sucking vicodines for a couple of weeks while toting a ringed pillow around with me to sit on. No matter what I did, it just freak'n hurt. Anytime I moved a muscle that contracted in that area, there was pain. I couldn't sit through a movie (literally) for about 6 months... took a couple of years for all the aches to go away. I feel for ya...

  5. As this is the Bonfire and all... Might I suggest your right ass cheek. I'm pretty sure it would look good there, and if by chance some point in the future you get tired of it, you could always enclose it in a circle and add the text 'Place Beer Here." 6. Crotalus01 I understand what your saying, but I also understand where he's coming from. I blindly follow no-one, and learned the hardway that just because someone has a riggers ticket it doesn't mean they are trustworthy, know what the hell they're doing, and/or should possess the ticket. There was a thread on it with specifics, but it got lost in a black hole; although I'm sure a mod could retrieve it if necessary. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  7. Quote...what problem does skyhook fix? [url] I don't think I've heard of an 'incident' (regardless of the severity) where there was only 1 factor involved. Just like a car accident, there is a chain of events leading up to it's conclusion. How far down the chain you go may or may not depend on your course of action. The sooner you break the chain of events, the better. As an example, in a purely hypothetical situation... A normal skydive; uneventful freefall and normal break off at 4K. You turn and track, and about the time you go to wave off you see someone too close to you for your comfort. You alter course and continue the track for a sec, wave off and pull. Oops... you didn't have a firm grasp on the pull and your pc binds a bit, slipping out of your hand. Your now burning thru 3K. It takes a 'micro-second' for your brain to realize it didn't extract, so while your watching your alti you reach back and search for you pc... cause you 'know' it's there, not extracted, and you have the alti to 'muck with it'. So now you grab it, noticing your alti is at 2500 and you think 'uh oh...getting close to my hard deck' and muscle memory kick in and you pitch (2100'). No real problems yet; you have a D license so your still legal... but your Sabre2/Spectre/Whatever likes to snivel and that last pack job was rushed and so it does... snivel that is. As your grabbing your risers (1300'), watching it remain a ball of crap above your head, you think 'come on you bitch...OPEN ALREADY!'. It does, but in a nasty lineover that immediately dives below the horizon and starts spinning, violently (now your down below 1000'...) You think 'Fuck this...' and reach down to cutaway, but your hand doesn't automatically find it like you 'always do' on the ground (700'). You find it, frantically pull, and nothing. You then peel it off and pull while bring looking at your reserve rip cord should be....but can't see it. Get the idea? Break the chain. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  8. Well, it's been a while since I went thru the SL course, but as I recall I was drilled to 'Arch, LOOK, reach, and pull'. Of course, I'm this is when there was an actual ripcord up front attached to the right side main lift web... Discuss your problems and/or concerns with your instructors; they have the answers and have seen this before. Disclaimer: I'm no instructor, but I am a smartass. 10. I'll second that. Ever wonder why you need a license to drive a car or catch a fish, but the only qualification to be a parent is the ability to kick your knickers down? 11. The poll asked 'Have you EVER...'; not 'Do you currently...'. Times have changed and we live in a different world. People change. I'd advise caution against judging folks for "past indiscretions". Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  12. Back in the day? ...yes and often. Today? No.
  13. Already done. I mentioned to my DZO, on several occassions, that one of my 'goals' for the year was to attend at least a basic course, and that I didn't really want to spend my $$$ elsewhere, and was hoping he could line something up. It's scheduled for June 2nd at AAS. Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  14. Ok...here's one. Mid 80's, got invited to do a demo/party jump into a jumpers lake side house for a big party. My rig was down for a repack, and after sniveling to the DZO about going, he finally relented and said I could jump a his Stratostar into it. Cool...the actual first square I jumped, got lost in the nostelgia, and so I readily agreed. The DZO didn't want to risk his student gear getting wet and beggers can't be choosers, so... Joe disappeared into the loft and came back with an arm full (so to speak) of fabric, tossed it on the packing mat, dropped a Wonderhog on the mat and said "have fun, but don't dump the reserve (with an evilish grin no less...)! I had to put the main on risers, pack it, and still get lunch before the appointed departure time... I had like 3 hours, so I thought 'No sweat...' Bear in mind I was a rigger at the time, so no big deal, right? Well, somewhere along the line, about the time I was tightening down the french links, I got sucked into going for lunch. So I carefully laid everything aside and off I went. When I got back, I did a quick continuity check and got it packed up. I noticed the reserve seemed "a bit" loose (you could actually depress the pilot chute an inch or so and there was lots of room left in the reserve container), and asked the DZO about it. He just laughed and said something to the effect of 'Let me reiterate...DON'T dump the reserve!". Hey, it's only 1 jump...what could go wrong? Anyway, we pulled a 4-way off and geeked at each other till pull time. I dumped and had a nice opening. Woo hoo! ...although it did look like a damn small piece of fabric above my head, it was square and flyable so... I checked my alti (2500' or so, a bit high for those days) and started horsing the canopy a bit with a few spirals and turns to 'woo the crowd' on the beach. Well... about the time I reached up to grab my front riser for some hard-core altitude loss, I noticed the french link (remember when I got sucked into going for lunch) had separated and was literally bent into a 'J' shape...the only thing holding the front riser on was the nut! I missed a few heart beats, grabbed the riser/link in a death grip, and checked my alti 1200'. Remembering his warning, I decided to land it. From that point on, I ever-so-gently made light L turns, hung out over the water (vs the big assed oak trees surrounding the lake) and landed CAREFULLY on the beach getting 1 foot wet (I was barefooted and helmetless, wearing only shorts and a tshirt). I learned a valuable lesson that day: regardless of where your at in the process, if you get interupted while rigging... START OVER.
  15. Just a thought, but did he pass AFF or make it thru the SL delays to the point of being able to do RW? If not... then perhaps he should. We wouldn't want him bouncing and upsetting Barbi now would we? Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  16. That other cutaway thread got me thinking... Let's hear of some instances where you 'should have' chopped, but didn't or of when you 'should have' gone to your reserve, but didn't. I've got a few, but I'll digress for now... Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
  17. Well, lets see... 1) Tension knot on a Cruisair which didn't allow the slider to come more than 1/3 down. Screwed with it until 1800' and then chopped. Stood up a 26' lopo. 2) Hooked up my canopy backwards after swapping out canopies for CRW and Mr. Bill dives previously during the day. I thought I was done for the day, but since I was just about to head off to the Army, the DZO graciously bought me a jump... last load of the day... and since I was recovering from a dislocated L shoulder (yes, skydiving related) and it had previously slid my enlistment date 3 mths to recover... I chose to chop it instead of trying to land backwards. Pissed off the DZO and got grounded... it seems he didn't believe me... I left 2 days later to Ft. Jackson. I still think I made the right decision...landing a 26' lopo is safer than landing a ragged out Bruise-air backwards! 3) Line over on a Laser at Raeford. Double manifested back to back loads... Trash packed... rode a snivel for a while, broke loose the cutaway handle and felt it start to buck open, so I dropped the handle and looked up just in time to see my canopy dive below the horizon to my right. Thought that was a bit odd... cut away and dumped my trusty reserve (we were good friends by now). Saddled out about 1200' and stood it up in the middle of the road, just missing the powerlines. 4)Try-outs for the Knights... Tension knot on the right side. Tried to clear it, only to have the brake hang up sending me into spiral. Chopped at 1800' and landed my first square reserve. Over shot the target and learned that a reserve ride is no excuse for not landing on target. 5)intentional, with tertiary belly wart. I needed a repack... Hmm...maybe I should start a thread 'when I should have chopped and didn't...' Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...

  21. Don't forget about your friendly neighborhood middle-men (DZ and rigger). Have the seller ship to them (protects them as their sending to an established business thingy which makes reclaimation on their end easier) before you ship the $$$ and you can have your/a trusted rigger inspect the gear prior to payment.
