Ok I just read threw all the posts. Its nice to see that everyone makes mistakes and lives on this tread at least LOL I had around 210 jumps and was jumping a camera for about 40. Yea I know lol anyways wanted to get a video of a friends opening. Well he planed to pull in place around 4500 feet so I went to my back right before that. My didder goes off and he is sitting looking at me for a couple then starts to track. I was so cought up in getting his opening that I wondered why he was tracking and I forgot where I was. My didder goes off again on my hard deck witch was 2000 and I was still on my back looking at him. It took me a couple seconds to realize that the alarm was not turning off flipped over and pulled. I was under canopy at a little under 1000ft. The real fucked up part of this was I forgot to turn my AAD on. Realized that when i went to pack Never give the gates up and always trust your rears!

Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
ozzy13 replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
For all you who don't get it: Doesn't matter where you get the rating or about your championships...it's all about what and how you are teaching the students. In reply to the statement above I put this trend up not go back and forth on how much coaches should be paid . That can be another topic .. When I posted this I had just taken the coach course and I FOUND THAT again I SAY I FOUND THAT the SDU part of the course was more in depth with teaching the student. So I wanted to see what everyone else thought about it . I see the difference at my DZ with the coaches that are USPA rated and the ones who are SDU and USPA rated . They spend sooooo much more time on the ground dirt diving and doing drills then the uspa coaches that just go over the dive flow and jump out of the plane . I am not saying that this happens every where .Let me make that clear. I defiantly think that a coach should prove them self if they are going to charge. My CD made sure and said it 100 times , you are not getting the rating until you can give the student the same quality coach jump as I can . So too the say the least I earned my rating So back to the topic . I want to know if USPA should change there course to the SDU one and why you think the way you do . That's all I was trying to get out of this .. To hear for more experience Coaches and their opinion on this matter . BLUE SKIES Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -

Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
ozzy13 replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
That's why I started the topic . For the future of the sport we should give the best we can offer to the student . NOT some minimum standard . I was taught by some really good USPA coaches . I just think that combining SDU's way with USPA's would be a good thing for the sport. Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -
I have put 200* jumps on my sabre 2 170 canopy. My wing loading is 1.2 . I really like it a lot. Nice soft openings . The end cell closer is really no big deal . Real easy to fix. One pump on the rear risers and they are out. Landings are a breeze . This canopy flares real nice . I really dont know what else to say. Good job PD

Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
ozzy13 replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
Raymond- the last time i checked the USPA is the one that gives ratings not the SDU. if thats the case than your SDU rating is a USPA rating. you might have taken a different offshoot of the course, but your doing the same course, to be a coach. Ozzy- If you read the forum I took both courses Raymond - personally by some of the responses you've already proven that the SDU course is not as good as the USPA course, Ozzy - I don't know HOW you came to that concussion Raymond -because all of you are saying that my course is better that yours and im a better coach because of it. Ozzy - I really dont remember saying that . I think both courses were good and that SDU went more in depth on the teaching part of the course Raymond - with that said, if you came at me like that being a coach, i would promptly go to manifest or the school and ask for someone else. Ozzy- I would do the same thing .I would tell them that I could not teach you anything because you know everything. Raymond - {rule of thumb: professionals don't degrade other professionals, they do their job as best as they can and if they have an issue they don't do it in front of students, or future students in a public forum, they pull the other professionals aside and work out their differences.} Ozzy - I agree 100% Last time I check this was the Instructors Forum and I don't have a issue . I was asking other Instructors their opinion on the coach rating. Raymond -as for coaching, charging someone $30 + a pack job is just bullshit for most coaches. ok you paid an assload for a course, that doesn't entitle you to charge ppl. i think covering your slot is reasonable but beyond that, your just ripping them off. Ozzy - I think there a lot of people that would disagree with this statement Raymond- any joe dick in the mud can teach ppl to move forward, backward, do turns, dock, ect. Ozzy- Again I think there a lot of people that would disagree with this statement Raymond- i think a person that teaches ppl how to backfly, freefly, ect, that has proven themselves to amoung the best (went to nationals and placed) should be the ppl that charge for coach jumps. but some person who just attended the basic course is just poo. Ozzy - If the coach rating was that easy everyone would have one . I think I have proven my self by getting the rating. I am a new coach and never said I know everything . I am trying to learn every day. If I can help someone out that is rewarding enough. Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -
Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
ozzy13 replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
Ok thanks that sounds like good advice and I see the whole problem with the money as I was a student going through AFP last year. This thread was not about money or the student . It is about the people teaching them. Again I am not really doing it for the money . I took the USPA and SDU courses and found the SDU one went more in depth on the teaching methods . That's why I started this topic going . The course cost the same and I got so much more out of the SDU course . Times change and I realize people get stuck in there ways . The A card coach jumps really don't teach a student to fly . I think it is just a safety thing more then anything else . I just wanted to get everyone else's feeling on this since I am new at being a coach and what to continue to learn as much as I can . There are so many people out there that I can learn from and I love to pick brains . I think to be a good coach is learn as many methods from as many people as you can and mesh it together . Thank you to everyone for their responses Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -

Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
ozzy13 replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
Well it should be the same . Why pay a video guy more and all he is doing is videoing the skydive . The coach is at least teaching something to the student . I also clearly stated that I really don't care about the money . I have another source of income . I do it because I love this sport and like to help people Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -

Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
ozzy13 replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
This is why I started this thread. My feeling is as a new coach the student should only get the best ( Not a minimum standard ) My Dz a coach gets 30 bucks and his slot paid for . Is that commercial. I don't think so . Its not even about the money for me . I started this discussion because I thought the SDU course was great and as a coach I think I will teach the student more then just to be safe. My true feelings are that all coaches should take the SDU program old and new and Uspa should change there course to the SDU one . Hey I am new at this and it is just how I feel Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -

Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
ozzy13 replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
I am not trying to put USPA coaches down or anything here . I know a few that are very good at what they do .I put this up here to see what other people think and to see if there were other people out there that think the bar should be raised . Yes safety is very important . I think and hope when I get done with a student that they have a good foundation on how to fly too . Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -
Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
ozzy13 replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
Skydive U is a commercial entity, created to train skydivers to a certain proficiency, and to train people how to instruct using Skydive U methods (and standards), and charge for it. Why wouldn't we want that ? USPA sets minimum standards to achieve safety by settings standards for rating holders. If people want to go above and beyond that, fine. Don't we need more then that ? I ask because I just got my rating for both USPA and skydive U last week and I think that I want to give everything I can to the student to be safe and to be able to fly (with others ) .Why should we as coaches just settle. The whole thing about the teachers aid I understand I guess but even as a teachers aid dont you want to teach them so they get it or just so they can pass? 1st downsize from student canopy?
ozzy13 replied to baseknut's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Again you need to talk to your AFFI . they will let you know what will be good for you. It is better to go slow on the down sizing then get hurt because you moved down to quickly. There are so many variables with canopies , wing loading ect. . You need to talk to your AFFI . they are the one jumping with you at this time . Good luck Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -

I would like to know what everyone thinks about this . Should USPA change their Coach rating course to the level of teaching that skydive U uses and why do you think that . Thanks Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -
1st downsize from student canopy?
ozzy13 replied to baseknut's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is a really bad place to ask what size canopy you should be jumping . You should ask you AFFI what size you should get . He or She knows you and will give you the right wing loading for you .good luck Never give the gates up and always trust your rears! -
