First BASE jump from World Trade Center
fastphil replied to Guru312's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
And yet Phil Smith (Smitty) made not only a skydive, but a base jump, inside the Astrodome to open one of the Astro games. He wore the Astro's uniform and threw the ceremonial first pitch... oops, getting off topic -
Skydiving: you screwed with my priorities in life ...

Yeah, and my original plan was to make just one jump... -
Brand Spankin' New To This
fastphil replied to thirdworld19's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Wendy W. is right on about currency; take plenty of it with you to the DZ. My thoughts are you should make all the jumps you can now, cause what if you can't jump even after six months... -
I jumped the smaller 'non student' 28 footer from the first jump, then progressed to bigger...
-
How high would you elevate it; about twelve-five I'm thinkin', and land on the other foot...

Hmmm... A parachute doesn't hold any weight; it's more of a release mechanism.

Thanks howardwhite, that's a good one for weight loss...

What made you decide to quit the sport?
fastphil replied to MichaelMoore's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There was a time I was more revved up about the sport than anyone, I gave it my all, and the sport gave back equally. Skydiving was life and life was good. In time skydiving lost some luster, and not because I didn’t like it, or was bored by it, because I was still very much attached and very much excited, but I was no longer getting back what I put in. In retrospect I think I got ahead of the sport. I was doing demos and stunts, all a lot of fun, and even helped birth the infant offshoot BASE, then in an act of infidelity I tried windsurfing and that’s where my focus went. I may be back soon; I’m getting too old to windsurf… -
So... farting brings on euphoria; and I thought it was the thin air.

Here is a pic with Tony's "lot of stuff" in the background. Tony did some good work, and at the time it seemed a step up from a helmet mount 16 mm movie cam, especially because we could re-live the jump that evening...

Mom won't let me go, how can I convince her?
fastphil replied to AlexEvanczuk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You'll never convince her, Moms are like that. You must decide on your own when to leave the safety of her apron... -

who else raised their prices?

We've come a long way... -
I met mine there. We were both serious jumpers so we had no ties off the DZ. What set me apart was a quick swoop and kiss pass on a formation dive that wasn't building anyway... oh yeah, she was a Skygoddess anyway

Sorry Wendy, I only meant that you might remember them, not that you were one of them (or at least, not that one). Forgive me, please... -

I’ve thought of him many times over the years, Joe was controversial, the kind of guy you love to hate. Joe was an innovator and natural leader, capable of not only pushing himself to new heights, but of pushing the entire DZ, and eventually the entire sport, to new heights. I was not present when Joe died and I did not attend his funeral, and I have always left a small spot in my reality for Joe to show back up some day. The “Gone With The Wind” cartoon that howardwhite posted was so entirely true to Spaceland at that time that I (and probably a few others (Wendy?)) can still put names on the characters. Some of the comments were nearly quotes and some of the real lifers thought it not so funny. Joe not only had his own view of the world, to a certain extent he made his own world, and allowed the rest of us to join him in it… -
Yeah, push him into BASE, where there's no room fro error; that'll get rid of him...

I, too, was at Spaceland jumping in that AFF ICC. We had been making our qualifying jumps during the week, sharing the DZ with the Right Stuff crew. A weatherfront had come through and cleared the skies so the film crew headed west to find cloudy skies. I remember too, Linda coming out with the news, stunning everyone. Joe was an excellent organizer, hackey player, jumper and all around good guy. A look at his legs gave indication of how bad he was shot up in Viet Nam. Of all my jump buddies, Joe was the most bullet proof, the last you'd guess would bounce. RIP Joe...
