  1. At the Z-hills Turkey meet in '76 or '77 our DC-3, loaded with 4 ten way teams, lost an engine just at liftoff. We got a treetop arial tour of Zepherhills and a smooth landing out of it back at the airfield. Funny, I was near the door, and first looked out at the right engine and saw there was a little smoke, that didn't seem too serious; then I looked left, and that prop was static. After a quick glance to see how close the rooftops were I moved forward and sat quietly in the crowd...
  2. You prolly should re-jump that SCR and buy all that beer again, just to be on the safe side...
  3. Wow, I thought this thread was about Bill Newell’s website. Roger, I hope you guys get back online soon, I realize the amount of work involved. Meanwhile I visited the “other” SCR site and saw their offerings include online dating and debt consolidation; maybe Bill should consider a skydiving financial plan or dating service along with that SCR patch (just a thought)…
  4. Random jumps are much fun. I used to live next to a small airfield (not a dropzone) and would get occasional jumps when friends would fly by and visit, but had to share with my wife. Got one jump from a friends steerman. And a slightly different note, the little Lady and I used to have an anniversary party with jumping in the preferred way to arrive. One year we had at least a couple of otter loads show…
  5. It's not really a matter of "hitting" the door. What they mean is "missing" the door, which means slamming your body into the edge of the doorway. This usually happens because of all the pushing and pulling in the line during exit...
  6. In 1982 a girlfriend and I jumped a small helicopter from about 1200' at a demo in Pearland TX. We both took short delays and probably saddled in about a grand or just under. I used a StratoFlyer and I think she did also, those little canopies had bulletproof openings.
  7. I guess I'm at that point where it feels like every weekend is a lottery...but not the good kind. Be safe guys...please. Boy howdy; that's kinda' negative...
  8. Expect to spend all the money you can make...
  9. ...you remember checking to make sure your parachute was perfectly round after opening.
  10. And when you exited 40th you had a long and fast dive ahead...
  11. Out of disinterest I didn't get my "D" as soon as I qualified, then a friend pointed out that I missed a chance at getting a sub 5000 and that numbers might even go over 6000. Licenses and awards kinda verify your position in history...
  12. I've seen jumps made indoors that come complete with possible malfunctions, canopy collisions and botched landings, but "flying hours" would take a long time to accrue...
  13. hmmm... together we fly; divided we fall.
  14. I used to wear mine, leg straps and all, on 100mph rides to the DZ (hence the handle "fastphil"). One day, back in the days of ripcords, when I parked and as I was stepping off at the DZ the spring loaded pilot chute popped and the main unloaded on the ground. I didn't stop riding with it afterward but I did make sure the pins were pushed up all the way. Hopefully my story somehow serves as a (don't let this happen to you) example...
  15. Seems like a dangerous apprehension to harbor; afterall, it's kinda like the spare tire for your car...
  16. Get used to it. Those 9 were just a fluke. Besides, girls think PLFs are cool...
  17. Yeah, that's the place; the bar is in the fusalage. Great recycle of an airship. If you stop in ask the waiter to show you the archived local news reports of the crash. And, like I said, the food is great...
  18. The C-123 became a restaurant too (see pic). Good seafood there...
  19. You'll have nearly a full moon Friday Nite but don't forget to have someone on the ground turn their car lights on the landing area...
  20. I'd pull out of the formation as a way of inducing a little altitude awareness into my buddies. I can remember a 4 way team that occasionally practiced to that altitude...
  21. I don't see it working. Typically, doesn't a rear riser flare have some affect on the trailing edge through the steering that are being pulled down along with the risers. When you cut the steering lines your rear riser flare will no longer have any affect to the trailing edge of the canopy. It's cool you carry a hook knife though...
