  1. If it were me I'd put it in a gear bag and throw it in the closet for about 20 years then take it out and throw it away. Wait, that reminds me, I think I still have a gear bag or two in the closet...
  2. That would explain the stiff looking arch...
  3. The Lady that taught my first jump course lost her finger due to a wedding ring / twin beech connection. I rarely wear jewelry myself, I've found it to be non compatable with the speed I need...
  4. Maybe you should'a chosen a different time to be born, although in the seventies not too many jumpers racked up 7900 jumps. That's pretty amazing...
  5. What's a BASCR? Sorry for the acronym; Bare Ass Star Crest Recipient
  6. I love to sit next to an open door in the cool breeze, thrilled by the prospect of falling out...
  7. Your opinion; jump off an object that protrudes into the sky and I'd call it a skydive.
  8. Your BASCR could come out of it, is that so bad???
  9. The late 70's and early 80's were defining time for the sport of skydiving. Gear was being developed so fast that by time you could get your new gear made it was already outdated. Those times brought us 3 rings, throw out pilot chutes, BASE and tandems. I guess I was spoiled jumping at a "twin otter" dropzone that also had a twin beech, couple of cessnas and a lot going on, and maybe we were even the root cause of Nicks rantings today. Joe Svec's late 70's comic strip (see below) brilliantly captured life and times at the DZ. I applaud Nick for hanging in there; I jumped ship and moved on...
  10. yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about. Why don't they just catch him and put that thread out of it's misery...
  11. I did nearly 500 my first year, knee surgery slowed me down a little...
  12. I agree, the memories are priceless in years to come...
  13. howdy Wendy, I thought (at one time maybe) all the awards required round stars. I've also got WSCR and BASCR, those awards would make a cool acquisition for Bill...
  14. The Star Crest Awards provide not only a platform for personal accomplishment, but also a gauge to measure the advancement of sport skydiving. Bill offered us a most unifying factor, complete with beer showers, something USPA could never seem to equal. My thanks to Bill and Roger…
  15. Cyn, keep turning your marshmellow and it won't burn on one side...
  16. OK this is an older thread and I am stretching it a bit but my wife has a couple of books published which are based around local DZs..... R Hmmm... "freefall" is nonfiction, maybe???
  17. The girl at 11:00 is maybe Kathy Chapline (rust rig and natural frap hat), she may have made a jump or two at Deland in that time frame. She's in this pic on the left for comparison (she was one of the best)...
  18. Dave wintered at Spaceland one year, and when he was leaving we tried to load his wife's car into the plane so she could fly with him. We must have looked like ants with this compact car on our shoulders, and we got it half way in but it would not quite make the turn to head up the aisle. Like they say; those were the days...
  19. hmmm... 48R is not Spaceland; I'm clueless also. If anyone can decipher the inner workings of Jimmy's mind it would be Bill Lee.
  20. Obvious troll Sorry, my bad; wasn't trolling just stating an outdated opinion. Basically you can goof up in freefall and go unnoticed, but under canopy the mistakes become incidents...
  21. One of my favorite low pulls wasn’t entirely low, but on a demo jump I spotted our exit right over a thousand foot tall building. With this part of the landscape protruding up into our airspace we had a special kind of ground rush (Phil Smith was on this load too; hmmm). Our becoming comfortable with the fast and reliable openings of freepacked square canopies also brought on the realization of the BASE opportunity that surrounded us. With several exits form planes and helicopters at barely over a thousand feet and the (famous) picture of Owen Quinn burned into my memory that transition seemed a no-brainer.
  22. Without the freefall there is little point to the sport. Your parachute is comparable to an airport luggage convair; just an necessary end to the trip...
  23. I was convinced they had balloon legs and arms, so was surprised when I got hold of the photo showing straight legs and arms. Is yours really a balloon suit version? The original version had "balloon" suits, indicative of the suits in use then...
  24. There is no modern “base” gear. Anything you are using today is just a rehash of things used 25+ years ago. The tail pocket, mesh slider to the meticulous flat pack. As for “free packing” I have over 500 jumps with free packing. How many do you have? Until you know my knowledge you might want to save your “sad”. Sparky Guess I don't get it either. I understand being at a grand at terminal is spicey place to be, but it seems like a freepacked canopy would be a good thing. I have 600 or so terminal freepacked openings, all of which were fast, straight and reliable...
  25. This was to 7200' in mid 70s. I'm kind'a wondering why I have an unspent ticket too...
