  1. No, it IS that simple. Actually, it might be a bit more complex. After hearing the voices on the tape it seems like the family is African American. I wonder if this would've happened to a white family? What part of a family getting pulled over, dragged accross the ground, held at gunpoint, and having their dog shot is justified by a single phone call saying "I saw a car with money falling off it". The dog was NOT aggresive. You can see clearly on the video, the dog was running in circles - not at the cop, but running in circles the way that happy dogs do. He was jumping up on his hind legs, tail wagging, and mouth slobbering. I don't care if that cop was scared for his life. I don't care about cops that fear getting shot every time they write someone a speeding ticket. That fear is no justification for treating innocent people with anything but the utmost respect. The fact is, the dog getting shot was the last straw in a series of moves that just blow my mind. I can't imagine a set of circumstances that legitimately and justifiably start with me forgetting my wallet on my car and ending with me going through a fellony arrest - never mind my dog being shot. If cops are saying that this is a reasonable way to treat innocent civilians, then cops are badly out of touch with the rest of society. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. It's pretty tough to install the Cam Eye II without cutting, then taping wires. If you're going to be cutting anyways, you could just cut out the switch, reattaching the wires on both sides. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  3. I'm still new to wings... I'm consistently raising my left arm as if I were in any other jumpsuit. I know there's something weird going on with my legs, but I'm not entirely sure what it is. Whatever I'm doing, I seem to have gotten it right after the first few jumps. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  4. Heya Ranchgirl! It was fun meeting you at Perris. Here's the pics I was trying to show you of WFFC last year, but was aparently too hungover to pull off. http://bombshelter.ca/~andy/photos/WFFC02W/ _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  5. Turbine snob? hello! We're talking about bringing turbines in! Are you paying attention? It's not about what kinda plane they're flying, its who I'm gonna meet up with. Like just last week, I met up with Gang Green Bob from Skydive Minnesota, did about 35 jumps with him all week. I hadn't seen him since an MSL meet monthes ago. You really never know who you're gonna meet up with, who you'll hang out with. I also ran into 'Lemonhead' - another canuck, he's one of the organizers atWFFC and a blast to hang out with. I jumped with him all week, too. Actually, I ran into a few from Minier I met when I went down with sunshine and val last year. That was neat, too. You don't need to lecture me about small DZ's. I guarantee the ones I come from are smaller then yours. Little dz's are cute, but given the choice I'd rather go big - and it's got nothing to do with the planes. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  6. Do not ever, EVERY buy something over the internet using wire transfer, bank draft, or certified check. If anything goes wrong, you're hosed. A bit better is to just pay on your credit card, then you get some protection. Pay with your credit card through a proxy like 'paypal', you get even more protection. Pay with your credit card through paypal with fraud protection, and you're even better. My real point, however - is that somebody selling and asking for a wire transfer is 99.999% guilty of fraud. Real merchants don't do wire transfer. My co-worker was recently defrauded over his purchase of an IBM laptop. They took him for $2,200. He wired, they never shipped. Because he paid by wire, he was hosed. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  7. Hmm. I don't. There's a pretty extensive list of places that I want to go, and I tend to use boogies and 'gatherings' as an excuse to go there. It did not take much of an excuse to get me to Perris last week. I can't say the same thing for a tiny 182 dz in the middle of nowhere. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  9. Your story was virtually exactly the same as that from Missy Nelson. The only difference was that she intentionally pulled her reserve after being unable to cuttaway her main. After hearing the stories, it took Bill Booth making fun of me to actually get me to buy them. Looking back, I really should've been more progressive to change. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  14. No disrespect intended to anyone, except perhaps employees of TSA, "airport security", and the airlines who don't know their company policies. In my experience, those are few and far between. I was only trying to state my personal opinion, and certainly don't mean to imply that any other one is wrong - just wanted to thoroughly explain my opinion. I certainly didn't mean to imply that going by any other technique was wrong. BTW - Canadian. I just happen to be in chicago now. ;) _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. Hmm. There was a zero byte file already there with the same filename. You were essentially trying to overwrite it, and got 'permission denied'. If you'd renamed it, it would've gone up. I deleted the zero byte file... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  17. My only point - even if you had the rigs packed in bags, you probably would've had the exact same situation. They would've gone through x-ray, seen the springs, seen the the cypres, and asked whats inside. You would've answered honestly, and the rest of the process would've been identical. My bet is by being honest and up front, I'm in a better position to explain what it is without setting off a newly deputize TAS agent. Because of the stories coming out lately, I've been asking every airline to provide me with their written policy on their letterhead. They've all complied. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  18. The altitude alarm is not a substitute for an audible. I've never heard mine in freefall. Sorry, my bad. I checked the email conversation I had with "kathy@suuntousa.com", and the refresh rate is once per second, not the 3 times /second I previously mentioned. Memory is the first thing to go, they say... Despite their disclaimer, I find it just as accurate as my alti-3, both in the plane and in freefall. Actually, I find it adjusts to rapid changes in speed (like canopy opening) better then the alti-3. Despite her statement otherwise, I've never noticed it go into the 'once per 10 second' mode she mentions. I speculate that if it won't do that during rapid altitude changes. Suunto watches are actually becoming quite common at chicago area DZ's. AFF and Tandem instructors, in addition to videographers are ditching their alti-3's in favor of the Suunto combined with redundant audibles. I should add, that I don't think they're very appropirate for those with lower experience. The smaller numbers can be dificult to read at times, especially at freefly speeds. It is virtually impossible to read in a standard 'sit' position without bringing your arm in closer. You really need to have progressed beyond using the altimeter as your main indication of altitude, to trusting the look of the ground at certain altitudes. I tend to use mine as confirmation of what the look of the ground has already told me. If I'm on a jump where I'll be frequently checking altitude - ie, a hybrid with multiple break-off points, I'll wear my alti-3. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  19. The fact of the matter is that we will never know for sure. Pro-tec helmets are proven against rigorous standards, "skydiving" helmets are not. We can only look at the materials used in manufacturing, and guess. I would question not the thickness of the foam in skydiving helmets, but the density of the foam. Pro-tec helmets have a very firm foam, you can not squeeze it easily between two fingers. Every skydiving helmet I've seen has very "squeezable" foam, to the point that your thumb and forfinger nearly touch when you squeeze it. Pro-tecs have gone through years of consumer safety reviews, independent tests, and government regulation to ensure they're safe. Skydiving helmets have neat places to attach your video camera, a handy windscreen to keep the wind out of your face, and sure do look purdy. For the record, I jump a Z-1 and a Velocity from Skydance Photography. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  20. Yeah, my brother gave me one for christmas. I took it back, got the refund, and bought a similar watch made by Suunto. I had two big complaints that made it innapropriate for skydiving. The first, was that I found it very cumbersome and time consuming to zero the altimeter. The second was that the altimeter updates itself once every three seconds, way too slowly to give reasonably accurate numbers in freefall. As comparison, the Suunto watches update 3 times per second. The Timex might be a neat tool for a pilot, but my opinion was that it was useless for a skydiver. Where did you see it so cheap? My brother paid $230 Canadian... about $150 US. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  21. I always travel with my rig on my back, and have traveled a most of North America like that, and have never had a problem. I do this because I'd rather be honest and up front with airlines about what I've got then to try to hide it. This practice has never failed me. I guess I'm supid. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  22. When I passed through O'Hare with a forgotten screwdriver in my camera case, they didn't notice. When I passed through Toronto with that same forgotten screwdriver, they offered to have someone track down my checked luggage, and put it in. This wasn't practical because of the short time before my flight, so confiscated it. While I completely support the TSA, interesting that the private security guard in Toronto spotted it while the TSA in O'Hare didn't. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  24. Personally, I've found exactly the opposite. 802.11 plays data intensive games like Quake beautifuly. While I haven't used it for video yet, I do use it regularly for a slew of other applications requiring low latency, and have never had problems. While I can understand latency being higher then wired ethernet, I can't imagine it being higher then wired ethernet + (dsl or cable) _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  25. I've used my camera frequently below freezing on the ground. I THINK the only problem with cold is related to moisture. You don't want moisture building up inside the unit, then freezing at altitude. I think the only danger is when you have it in a very humid environment on the ground, then take it up to a very cold altitude. I haven't had problems. Yet. Oh, one tip: BUY the extended waranty. You will need it. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
