  1. If you are talking about the one in Incidents, it's probably because it strayed too far from the intent of the forum (you can read the guidelines by clicking on the "New Post" button in that forum), or devolved into bickering. I saw some of both.
  2. "I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers and Methodists! " ...and from the same film... "My mind is aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought careening thru a cosmic vapor of invention!" "Ditto!"
  3. A step through is just where the container passes through the lines. The mal in the picture probably occured after the container passed between the D lines and brake lines on the right hand side. It often happend like this: You come in from a jump and drop your canopy on the floor, then your set the rig down on top of the lines. If you then pick the canopy up, the rig might pass through the lines, resulting in a step through. Like everyone else mentioned, a continuity check should catch it. I also daisy chain my lines before I walk in to help prevent something like this from happening. Hmm. Now that I have typed that, it strikes me as something that is easier to explain with a demonstration than written paragraph. If you ask a packer or experienced jumper at the DZ how it could happen, they should be able to show you pretty easily.
  4. Take a look at what jdhill wrote above. A DZ can put anything they want in the waiver. They could add a line that says, "After you jump, you must sign the deed to your house over to the DZO," or anything else that they wanted. Most DZs probably wouldn't be so unscrupulous as to try something like that, but you never know.
  5. Adding to what billvon said... If you are physically capable of swimming but just don't know how, sign up for swimming lessons with the YMCA or the Red Cross (last time I checked, they both had adult programs at reasonble prices), or get a friend to teach you.
  6. Doh, I'm an idiot. My post should say that I have Type 8 risers.
  7. I use 21", Type 17, velcro toggles, dive blocks, mini rings. I want to buy the exact same risers, but with velcroless toggles to save my brake lines from some unnecessary wear. I like the blocks, but for no particular reason other than I have never had loops (FWIW, I do not swoop). I like Type 17 (wide) because even with Slinks my slider only comes down to the dive blocks, then stops. If I pull it down, the friction on the wider risers keeps it from sliding back up without any sort of keeper. Length and ring size are just because of my height and what my rig came equiped with.
  8. Terry has had a long-standing vendetta against SDC. He's probably in the Chicago media's speed dial. Search rec.skydiving for "TandmTerry" for more info.
  9. Do you care to elaborate? It seems like a perfectly valid opinion to me. Name-calling just makes us as skydivers look worse.
  10. You are exceeding the maximum recommended loading for that canopy by 30 pounds. The effects of overloading an F-111 canopy have been discussed in these forums before.
  11. Damn. Roger was the first person to greet me on my first trip to SDC, and recognized me when I came back months later. For those of us in the Chicago TV viewing area, Fox 32 will be running a piece about Roger on the 9:00 PM news.
  12. I'm not a TM, so I won't offer advice, but if I may make a request: If your student gets video, please, please, pretty please don't spend the entire dive geeking the camera. I've seen plenty of videos where the TM literally doesn't stop until pull time. The student spent a lot of money to get a cool video of himself and I personally think that the instructor should sorta fade into background and let the student get his face time.
  13. Looks like the weather is going to suck tommorrow, so: 0:5:0 Some RW, some hop 'n pops. Good fun. Number 100 next weekend if the weather holds.
  14. "I cannot kill my friend" [to goons] "kill my friend."
  15. I had to Google it.
  16. Do you say, "We dub from an analog source to the DVD," or do you not say anything? Not to pick nits, but I would think that the very nature of a DVD implies that it's a digital copy. If I paid extra for a DVD only to find out that it was a dub of a VHS tape, I'd be pissed.
  17. There is a thread about this in Incidents (I'm assuming it's the same guy and somebody just got mixed up about the country).
  18. My plans are to work, skydive on the weekends, maybe do a little summer school, and do WFFC in August.
  19. Doesn't look a whole lot worse than a King Air (see attached).

Are you using Slappie's chat? With what browser? And what OS?

Do you have any specific error messages to report? If not, we are really just grasping at straws here.

Get a real IRC client instead of using the Java one (mIRC, for example). If you have mozilla you might also have Chatzilla installed (from the toolbar: Window->IRC Chat). Server: irc.xircn.com channel: #Dropzone Hookitt and I are alone right now.
