I've got my answer so drift away! Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

Don't they have vents to keep the inflation while flying backwards or in a stall? OMG I can't believe that I my attention got stuck in a drift of my post and I'm flowing with it Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

Oh yeah? Here's the song that goes with it ... http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=04bg9IC9N6w ...don't ask, don't tell, keep it on the DL! Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

One example that goes in my mind is a landing that I've did on my 230 Spectre. Long story short: I've did a helicopter jump and while we're climbing the winds pick up big time. We took a long time to exit and meanwhile we were drifting downwind. I've open over forest with no penetration. Find a small "clear" place (20mx30m) and went to land. It look clear but it was not. It had a swimming pool in construction. I've manage to land OK and now I'm wondering what if I downsize and I find myself again in similar spot? In that case slow flight landing sounds good especially since I will not need to much space for the flare to burn the horizontal speed (landing distance). Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

Indeed, I'm mostly asking with downsize in mind. I want to see what techniques are transferring to a higher WL. I've finish Safe Flight School while I was in Spain and progressive flare with flare points and slow flight/landings was one of the things that stick in my mind. We had different WL in the class in the range 0.8 to 1.3 and we've been told the we should all be able to safetely land from half brakes. When I did my landing I've pop-up so there was still a lot of lift left. I want to downsize this year (100 jumps) to 170 so I can do CRW. My plan is to put around 80 jumps on a 190 (1.1) then move to 170 (1.2). I'm still thinking 7 cells. Knowing that I can still land from slow flight at a higher WL if I find myself in a tight landing area would be really sweet. In a way it makes sense. Let's say that in full flight you've got a descent speed of 25 km/h. For a tip-toe landing the descent speed should be @ 5 km/h. During flare you're descent speed "decelerates" in 2 sec from 25 km/h to 5 km/h and this acceleration multiply by the system mass gives you the extra lift that your canopy produce during flare. When flying in half brakes the descent speed is smaller so you need less extra lift out of flare to get to a safe landing speed. That's the theory at least but I know better not to trust a theory over experience hence the questions

Can any "modern" (post ZP and semi elliptical) wing be safely landed from half brakes? I know it works for lighter WL (I've landed mine) but how does this scale with higher WL? Regards, Jean-Arthur Deda. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

The injuries that you make while having fun are not injuries. They are memories. This is true for every activity out there: snowboarding, longboarding, kiteboarding, wakeboarding, sex, etc. Take it easy, Jean-Arthur Deda. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

I haven't remove any twists for 50 jumps or so. I don't let go of my toggles until I've stowed them so I'm thinking that I shouldn't have any twist but I might be wrong in my assumtion! Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

After the opening seizure with the brakes still stowed it flies well. I'll check the brake length from tail to cascade point and from there to the cat eye and (finger crossed) I might need to change only those lines. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

I've bought my canopy with "200" jumps on it and I've put 100 this year. The openings were never on heading and lately they got worse. After the long snivel it surges right in front of me. Then for 4-5 sec it rocks back and forth while looking un-inflated (the nose looks closed). All this time I have no control over the heading using rear-risers so I can't do any canopy avoidance maneuver (unless you count cut-away as one) if I need one. After the opening episode it flies and lands pretty good! I don't roll or push the nose back while packing and I haven't change my packing habits. Do you guys reckon that a re-line might fix the problem? (For the record this started happen before having my canopy covered in mud). Regards, Jean-Arthur Deda. Been jumping in Spain and landed out in a lot of MUD. For some reason I didn't trust the water (since it's treated with Chloride) so I've let the mud dry and once dried remove it with a towel. However, I still have big mud stains on my canopy. Mostly on the top skin and right stab. What's the best way to remove the mud stains from the fabric? Regards, Jean-Arthur Deda. Am I doing the right calculation for the mechanical advantage? 674.4 pounds / 3,34 pounds = 201.79640718562874251497005988024 to 1 m.a. for the mini-force. That's better than the theoretical m.a. of the large rings. Also the test done for the mini-rings shows a 75.605381165919282511210762331839 to 1 m.a. which is closer to what Andre posted (BTW thanks) than my 30 to 1. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

It's calculated in Poynter and Jumpshack has an article on m.a. edit to add: http://www.dropzone.com/gear/articles/The3RingWhatItIsAndHowIt.shtml http://www.dropzone.com/gear/articles/Reversedvs.Non-ReversedR.shtml http://www.dropzone.com/gear/articles/AnalysisofaRiser.shtml Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

This is an interesting subject. Is it possible that the loop or the cut away cable could brake before the risers? From the mechanical advantage point of view I'm aware of the following models: - Type8 risers with large rings (200 to 1 m.a.) - mini force (unknown m.a. but better than mini risers) - mini risers (30 to 1 m.a.) - reverse mini risers (unknown m.a. but lower than mini risers due to a missing lever effect from the closing loop) Is it possible that on the models with lower mechanical advantage, for the loop or the cut away cable to brake before the risers (even if the riser has a hole in it)? I agree with Squeak 100%! Walking accuracy is a LOT BETTER than landing accuracy! Think of all those accuracy chugs/swooping chugs done and watch. Everybody gets the beer by walking to it. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

In my case I got a lot more excess line. I can do 3 loops in the tabs with my excess line. My rigger elongated the brake lines in the begging of the season. Thanks anyway mate! Jean-Arthur Deda. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!
-
Not elastic ... they're nylon type loops (if that's the right name). To use an analogy they are made with the same material as the front riser loops ... if that's helpful in anyway. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

I have the same problem on almost every dive. The excess line is fling around and I have pay attention how I grab the toggles. Spectre 230 (a lot of excess line) Dolphin container with Mirage risers (my old risers were wear out so under my rigger recommendation I've bought Mirage). The way I'm stowing the excess line is: - Excess line goes through the lower tab located in the back of the risers. - then it goes through the upper tab. - then I roll it until is the same size as the upper tab. - then I tuck the roll in the upper tab. (See attachment) Any suggestion on how to stow the excess line are more than welcomed!!! Regards, Jean-Arthur Deda. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

When you say better do you mean you can land it easier in no wind situation or it stays longer level with the ground? Spectre already has a powerful flare, popping up is really easy even at the bottom end. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

No. At this point I'm more afraid of what's in between pull main and do reserve because it might prevent me from having a good reserve, of doing a 2way into 2000 ft (pulling low with no separation), of having free-fly clowns jumping first, of the guy who counts 10 sec in 4. ... Next season its going to be something else... Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

From all the full face helmets that are out there, I've only jumped Havok so I can't compare with the others but here's my limited take on it: Cons: -Today at altitude -15C (5F) at ground level ~7-10C. In this temperature my Havok steamed up really good. -Emergency handles are in the blind spot. -Look is another minus. Unless you like to look like a N.A.S.A. dork who tries to impress tandem girls. -The fact that you can open the entire helmet and not only the visor is another minus. Under canopy is an open helmet = no jaw protection. Pro: - Really really confi. - Friendly to glasses. - Great padding makes it suitable for cold jumps (if you can put up with the steam). - 2 Auditives. - I find that in the plane, it simplifies the before exit procedures.(no need to put on the goggles, then the open face helmet and then "pump" the goggles to fight with the steam). Banned hookturns. Which turbine dz's have banned hookturns?

From a non-technical/common accepted point of view hook turn means what? toggles? Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!
