My ground camera is an Elan 7e with 28-135 IS. I love this setup, although when I want to go shorter and lighter I use the 50/1.8 II. The 28-135 is a very useful lens with good quality. It is arguably the sharpest of the Canon consumer zooms, and it rivals the crappier Canon consumer primes. I have found IS to be very useful, allowing me to handhold at least two stops more than I would be able to without it. This allows more natural party pics. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

Shortly off student status but still under a student canopy, I seized the opportunity to learn a good bit about jumping in questionable weather, off field landings, and downhill landings, all on the same jump. Winds were iffy but within reason going up but were probably 25 mph and steady by the time I opened. The spot was short, so I could not make it back. Looking between my feet, I realized I was going backwards. I picked a big field and held the best I could on the upwind side of it until about a thousand feet, when I made a 360 to get over the field. I then held into the wind and waited for gravity to do its thing. At about 12 feet, I did what I had always done, flaring the canopy with a complete toggle stroke. My probelm was that I was landing on a hill that was going down behind me. The canopy planed out and flew backwards for a while. By the time it sunk in, I was a good bit over the ground and had a less than dignified landing in a heap. Then the wind dragged me for a while until I got the canopy under control. Many lessons learned. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

Taking a CD from Sam Goody deprives Sam Goody of the ability to sell a piece of merchandise for which they have paid. So there is a true "victim" there - you have the benefit of having purchased the CD, but Sam Goody does not have the benefit of having sold it. Downloading music may or may not deprive anyone of any benefit. What if I download and make a CD of songs I never would have purchased otherwise, and I know I never would have purchased those? I am better off, because I have the music, but no one is any worse off, because I would never have purchased it. OK, now how about I download and burn a song from a CD I already own, but the CD is at my house and I want to hear the song while I drive home? I have already paid for the song once, but now I have the benefit of having two copies (one for home and one for car). Should I have to buy it twice to have the convenience of two copies that will never be played simultaneously? How about I bought the CD, and because it was a low quality disc, the coating has gone bad and now it won't play. The record store won't exchange it because I have had it for two years, but I paid to hear the music. Should I be able to burn a new copy? What if I scratched the original CD by being careless? These are just things to think about. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

Open container in the plane, what would you do?
bmcd308 replied to AggieDave's topic in Safety and Training
I've kicked a very low number jumper off a load for dislodging his main pin as he boarded. No one on board had a pullup cord. But assuming we are at altitude: Pilot cute out: Yell "pilot chute", grab it, keep it away from the door, repack it, skydive. Container open: If I have a pullup cord, tell the pilot, make sure whoever is by the door knows to keep it shut, and reclose the container. No pullup cord - jumper sits back to wall and rides the plane down (pilot can close the door of our Cessna). Reserve PC out - everyone lands with the plane. d-bag out - If I have a pullup cord, reclose the container. It should be obvious how to get it back in without a step through. freebag out - everyone lands with the plane. If the door is already open, contain whatever you can contain and get the jumper out if necessary. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com -

That was hilarious, man. Next boogie, I promise not to have seafood, and I'll see if I can't get a role in your boogie video. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

I think there will be a lot of cross-party voting in this election. I think Bush is the lesser of the two evils, but I find it interesting talking to my friends how many of my dem friends think GWB is the lesser and how many of my repub friends think Kerry is the lesser. I have yet to find any strong supporters of either candidate among my group of friends. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

What's your opinion of the canon 300d
bmcd308 replied to genoyamamoto's topic in Photography and Video
I agree with you that the build quality of the higher-end Canon cameras is much higher than that of the Rebel series. If you want a camera to use for personal defense, you're not going to pick a Rebel. Certainly an elan series camera (10D) is going to be tougher than a Rebel series, like the 300D. >>botom line the 300d is a consumer model, not prosumer. -

What's your opinion of the canon 300d
bmcd308 replied to genoyamamoto's topic in Photography and Video
That is a 6 lb lens desinged to have the camera body hanging from it, not vice versa. That is a little like saying your friend tried to jack up his car by putting the jack under the bottom of one of the open doors and then implying that the build quality of the car was low because the door broke off. Your 10d will eventually break its lens mount, too, if you try to hang your 300/2.8 off the end of it and support it by the camera body rather than the collar on the lens. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com -
Well, I for one, WAS SUCKING at the MGB. I think I got my hands on some bad seafood or something, but by 11 AM Friday I was curled up in a chair delirious with fever in the packing tent. Spent all the jumpable days of the boogie either in a chair or in bed. No nig noggery. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

Again, I gotta ask, A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT? REALLY?
