Here is one of mine. I may have made it too small, though. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

No. You don't want to be over the target at 1,000 feet. You want to be beside it and upwind of it. By how much? That is where experience and trial and error come into play. The key to a reasonably accurate landing for a relatively new jumper is to accurately predict, on the ground before you go up, where you want to be at 300 feet. Then pick a pattern that gets you there. How do you get to the spot where you want to be at 300 feet? Well, naturally, by picking a spot where you want to be at 600 feet that will allow you to fly crosswind to that 300 foot spot. And how do you get to that 600 foot spot? By picking a spot at 1000 feet that allows you to fly downwind to get there. By starting your planning high, you can make corrections all the way down. Choose a landing spot that allows lots of leeway for a safe landing on either end on final. That is, one where if you are way short or way long you will be OK. Now pick a spot over the ground where you want to be at 300 feet. On a no wind day, this will be about 750-900 feet away from the spot where you want to land. On a windy day, this will be shorter, as your approach angle over the ground will be steeper. Fly to that spot and face into the wind at 300 feet. See where you end up. Then keep doing this over and over and over until you get good at picking that spot in various wind conditions. The key to accurate landings involves putting yourself in a position to land on the target at 300 feet. The key to putting yourself in that position involves putting yourself in a spot to get to that 300 foot point at 600 feet. The key to doing that is to put yourself in a good position to be at that spot at 1000 feet. As you get more experience, accuracy becomes something you start thinking about higher and higher. There is no substitute for experience, so keep flying a planned pattern and figuring out how much you need to shorten or lengthen your final approach in various wind conditions. Hanging out realtively close to or over the peas from 1000 feet down is a recipe for a low turn or an obstacle strike, since the one place you pretty much know you will not land is the spot you are over at 300 feet. I'm with DJL on this one. You guys are roommates. You are in college. Unless you feel like your roomie really does systematically take advantage of you, blow it off. And before you decide that your roomie does take advantage of you in one area, make sure that you consider others as well. For example, are you hitting out of roomie's bag? If so, that is an example of roomie hooking you up. Do roomie's parents buy a kitchen load of food every three months when they visit? Does roomie do your math homework? Stuff tends to even out over time, so don't let one thing get in the way of what could be a great and lasting friendship. On the other hand, don't let yourself get run over, either. You gotta be the one to draw the line. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

I have been around for several bad accidents, but the only actual ground impact I have seen was this: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1636889;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread I don't think I'll ever feel the same way about the sport. How do you get a deal on a custom mirage G4 system?

You could enlist, get deployed to Iraq, then come back and use the discount. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com -
I read the book while I was on Atkins, and once I had been on Atkins several months I transitioned to SBD. It has been a pretty good maintenance diet, but I have gained some weight back. The first couple of weeks of SBD are pretty much the same as the induction phase of Atkins. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

Wow, dude. You are getting big. In that picture, your belly looks like another whole person. Are you sure that's only 10 extra pounds? j/k. I have gained some weight back, too, from my recent weight loss. I get a little grief sometimes, but I have never felt like anyone was being mean. Plus, I dish it out so much that when it comes time to take it, I pretty much have to be a good sport. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

West Tennessee Skydiving Memorial Weekend Boogie

I can always eat tamales. The other skydivers might prefer if we make Monday night tamale night, but that is not my biggest concern. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com -
I've posted this story on here before, but when I was making plans to do my first tandem, I asked tons of people to come with me, including almost everyone in my office. A black woman in the office looked me straight in the eye with a somewhat surprised look on her face and said, "Black people don't do stuff like that." She was not joking a bit, and I think she might have thought I was an idiot for not knowing it already. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

Charlie, Joel, Jeff, and Zach Mullins IIRC, the only time I have seen Andrea Mullins make a skydive she did so with the three younger ones. That would make a mom+3 kids 4 way. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

You probably do not WANT to jump with a tandem. When you have been around the sport longer and heard more things that can get screwed up with a tandem like its giant burble and its highly variable fall rate and its big string of death trailing behind it and it is sliding all over the sky as the student changes body position and the TI has to pay more attention to the different EPs and the cameraman and correcting for whatever the student is doing and the pull altitude is higher and the handles are in a different place and this is a ripcord rig not my normal sport BOC rig and 2000 other things, the whole idea of jumping with a tandem will make you nervous. You and the TI need to be 100% sure that you absolutely will not have a bad dock and tangle everyone up in that drogue. Three people rolled up in a drogue bridle would fall very fast. But as Rhino might point out, it would be cool video if you docked on your friend. Just ride the plane with your friend, and let your friend enjoy his or her first skydive without any external distractions. Or maybe let your friend get to the door and do a cool flipping exit so they can watch you fall away. Just my $.02. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

And, in general, Nikon wide angle lenses are better than Canon wide angle lenses. I think that even the Canon butt-kissers (myself included) know that there are tradeoffs between the two systems. Nikon did indeed one-up Canon with the D70. I am a Canon guy because freefall photography is only a very small part of what I want to do with a camera. For most of the rest, I think Canon is a better system. If I was concentrating on freefall, landscape, and photojournalism at the time that I picked a system, I would probably have picked Nikon. As it was, I was concentrating on sports and portraiture. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
