  1. It's an old incident. I just went and looked at a few pages of the posts in the thread, and it is so garbaged up that it is not worth your time to look at it. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  2. I used it last year as the basis for my own presentation (with attribution, where appropriate), which was well received. I highly recommend it. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  3. The whole idea that you need to "see the elephant" before you can teach something is silly. I am a low jump coach that everyone complains about. I have stopped weighing in on most of these threads, because there really is no use. But since this one touches the limited issue of whether you need a cutaway to teach EPs, I will make a post. I used to review EPs with student prior to my having a cutaway. Then I had one. You want to know how much that changed about what I say to new people? Nothing. Nothing changed. I still tell them to look grab look grab peel punch peel punch. I guess what is a little different is when they ask me what it feels like to do it for real, I get to tell them that it feels a little like when you think you are going to burp but you actually throw up a little and then everything is ok. I bet that helps them a lot. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  4. When I was a student I had "Number 1" tattooed to my forehead. Sadly, I was Number 2. I was lucky, because it was a long time before I realized it. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  5. It's not a copout. When Chris Welker posted on here that a crash at our dz would have happened anyway regardless of wingloading because that particular jumper was hell bent on breaking himself despite the fact that everyone was telling him to slow it down, he got tarred and feathered by people who had no idea of the personalities involved. Hell, people from other regions were threatening to try to get him impeached from the BoD because of it, and people who skydive on other continents were sending him profane e-mails. He might not have made his point as well as he could have, but the hoopla around it certainly provides evidence against your post. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

  8. Good dog ... bush must be kept trimmed! ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  9. I was an econ major. I started out as a physics major, but it was too hard. My advisor told me that the easiest major for a washed out physics major was econ, because econ is all about math, but it is easy math. To some extent, that was true. Brent EDIT: If you use facebook, PM me or just friend me. I think that so far I have the absolute coolest group of facebook friends ever, since almost everyone is a skydiver. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  10. Every time this thread pops up like a 50 jump freeflyer, it makes me laugh. This has been around for a LONG time. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  11. That is GREAT! Student appears cool and in control, while two instructors appear way out of control! ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  12. Are they going to prosecute any of the people who made it a law to have airbags in the car, thereby killing that child? ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  13. >>I can not think right now why the RSL will kill a skydiver in a regular skydiving activity, can you ?
  14. Cingular is very spotty, and there is a charge for roaming sometimes. Trouble is you never know whether you are roaming because of the way their phones work. So you have to call and bitch about the roaming charges. So far they have always taken them off my bill, but they always say that this is the last time. As another poster said, sometimes my phone works well in my house, and sometimes I get the "No Service" message. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  15. I often rode in the car without a seatbelt as a child, including sitting in my parents' laps. I think it is hard to believe that we have slid so quickly down the slippery slope that so many people here think that my parents were bad parents or should have been put in jail or that I would have been better off in a foster home because of it. I work with a lady who volunteers for all kinds of children's causes, and she even has some kind of professional certification that somehow makes her an expert on the parenting skills of others, such that she does interviews for DHS sometimes. There was a case here where a child about six or seven year old wandered off out of the yard into the woods while his mom wasn't looking. She calls and calls for the kid, then finally calls the police, who do a search, and find him near the bank of the MS River (or maybe some creek, I don't remember) curled up with the family's dogs, who have been keeping him warm. Anyway, the girl in my office thinks that the kid should be removed from the home not because mom took her eyes off him for a moment (she recognized that such a thing could happen to anyone) but because the family lived near woods and a body of water. In her opinion, there was just too much that could go wrong living so close to woods and a river that people should not be allowed to raise children there. I think that is a silly way to think, and I think it is scary that everyone seems to support severe penalties for parenting differently than they think is appropriate. 16. This is a crappy data point, because I do not know any details at all, but I know there is a jumper at my dz who has been around a LONG time who was a defendant in a lawsuit over either a low altitude canopy collision or even a landing jumper vs. landed jumper collision. I think this happened way back in the good old days, but I really don't know. Wow, rereading this it is a friggin useless post. So to summarize, I heard that this guy got sued for something at some point in the past. You can quote me on that. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

  19. I am 6' 6" and did my tandem out of a Cessna 195 with a TM who is about 6' 4". Video guy was also 6' or taller. The other jumperon the plane was drakeshelby, who while not all that tall, thinks that lifting weights is a fun hobby. There was NO extra room in that plane. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

  23. At Rantoul a buddy and I were doing a two-way out of the news helicopter, which was helo jump #10 or so for me. After enjoying the ride for a while, we gave each other pin checks in the seat, then we both kind of zoned out watching the world below. I got poked back to reality by the pilot yelling at us to get out. I looked to my left, and kevin (drakeshelby) was already out on the step on his side. So I climbed out quickly, he gave a count, and we went. I have never been more scared in my life. I had forgotten it was a helo jump, and the still air feeling truly scared the crap out of me. I felt like I couldn't breathe. It was several seconds before my brain processed what was going on and I was able to actually skydive. He flew over to me to get a quick star, then we tracked and dumped. When we landed, he said "Man, what was wrong with you? I've never seen you look like that!" It was really wierd. Lesson: don't exit into still air without being mentally prepared. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

  25. I witnessed an AFF do CHECKING IN exit. I heard the cursing of the exiting main side JM from inside the plane (KA, so main side was inside during the debacle, which actually wound up going smoothly). ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
