Looking for a good helmet with Gopro mount. Advice?
DougH replied to Nicknero1405's topic in Gear and Rigging
Moving the hard camera housing inside of the helmet and closer to your dome simply changes the type of danger. Don't hit your head! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
Do a search, here and in the main forum. Done wrong you can kill yourself, the instructor, or the student. It has happened in the past. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Absolutely, I give them a full canopy instruction. They fly the majority of their jump, but I don't let them land the canopy with me. At pattern altitude they give the toggles back and I ask them to hold on to the excess at the main lift web friction adapters. If you have every student land with you then my hat is off to you. Overall I would rather shoot my own handicam any day of the week. But let's not be overly hypocritical, tandems are a training method but most tandems aren't training skydives. If they were we would have them do a 8 hour ground school first and have them prepay for a few jumps. We would also stop taking money of people without the fitness, mental or physical, to progress on to solo jumps. I try to make every jump educational, promote the sport, but I am just a glorified amusement park attendent to a large percentage of my passengers. Wanting it to be different doesn't change they way the customers see a tandem. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Did this for two years, DZO's choice, not mine. Turned out a modest video product, sucked for the editor. Exit shots were more tight on their face, but we had a way that got some of the shot, and had them still holding the harness with both hands. Bad students were just as bad as with outside video, handicam on instructor, and no video. Good students the same. I think more of them actually followed instructions on exit because if they didn't "they were going to mess up their video". How about taking note and then adjusting your pattern the next time around? Final isn't the place for course corrections unless it is to avoid other jumpers in the pattern, or obstacles. I will use all type of control input to avoid the Piranha farm pond, but won't do anything if I am simply over flying my target. Using deep deep brakes to sink a canopy on final, setting aside the fact that it is difficult to do and done incorrectly can hurt you, is not unlike jamming on the brakes unexpectedly while on the freeway. Front risers can increase your descent rate, and therefore shorten your glide. Done improperly, and without training, they can also help deliver your to the site of your femur break. If you aren't going to have a canopy collision, and you aren't going to hit something on the ground, just keep flying with minimal corrects, and try to figure out how you can adjust your pattern to hit your target with minimal input the next time around. Video camera limits and experience (and new tech)
DougH replied to tkhayes's topic in Safety and Training
They don't need it, they just think that they deserve it. Forget that fact that at a 100 jumps most jumpers still have their heads in their asses in the plane, in freefall, and under canopy. You can blame their parents who let them grow into instant gratification, entitled little shits. I don't have time to read all these posts at the moment, but I did skim and see a few comments along the theme of getting rid of a rule that isn't followed anyway, and old timers needing to accept the new age. Well bullshit. I am not old, I waited till 200 jumps, and the next 5 years of new jumpers at my DZ is going to wait too. I can list a number of reasons, but at the end of the day it comes down to the fact that waiting isn't going to kill you. And having to wait and work for something gives you more respect for the undertaking, and you will have more experience by the time the wait is over. Military jumps and civilian jumps
DougH replied to Blairzo13's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A jump is a jump, if you can document it then it should could towards your 25. Otherwise static line students from the old day would have had to start counting to 25 after they were cleared for delays. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
Video camera limits and experience (and new tech)
DougH replied to tkhayes's topic in Safety and Training
We did this for two seasons before switching DZO's. It worked out fine, although sometimes the product sucked. I noticed no statistical difference in people that don't hold on to their harness until I deploy the drogue and prompt them, no difference in the amount of people who de-arched or dropped legs in weird ways. Some percentage of tandems are going to be overloaded and perform poorly. Now I have no proof of this, but I almost think that trying to frame their shot gave them something else to focus on, and kept them from zonking out. I also think they worked harder on their arch because I would tell them it was key to a good video. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -

The Cookie Fuel is a great helmet. I would get one of those, and when you are ready it will take the Cookie GoPro Roller mount. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
My M2 was around 900 dollars. It hasn't operated when it shouldn't have yet since installing it this year, and I haven't given it an opportunity to try to save me either. Plus for me was lower cost, and no scheduled mtx. I ended up jumping without my cypress 2 installed for a while when it was out for service, or when it was returned from service mid repack. Not having to take it out and send it in means that I am more likely that jump with it, and avoid having periods of time with no AAD. Yes I know you can rent them during mtx, I am just too busy to deal with arranging all of that. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

How do you get a plane wreck off a DZ?
DougH replied to riggerrob's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Sounds like the DZO and the guy owning the title are jerk offs. If they want to tear it down, move it so it isn't an eye sore, and a cruel reminder to those involved in the crash. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
From the UK " attempted Homicide" post, BPA a tandem report on
DougH replied to DougH's topic in Tandem Skydiving
This report was referenced in one of the incident threads, about the woman whose reserve slinks came, by some manner, undone. I thought it was interesting, mainly around the level of detail of reports, especially the tandem section, which had an entry about a re-currency jump where one of the upper connectors undid itself! Overall I am surprised that the BPA didn't also quantify the volume of flatulence released on the climb to altitude, they seem rather anal, so that would appear to be a measurement of interest. Safety & Training Committee Minutes of the meeting held on Thursday 4 June 2015 at 1900 "...There had been 13 Tandem Malfunction/Deployment Problem reports received. These included a number of malfunctions on the same canopy. The CI has now taken the canopy out of service. Another involved a Tandem Instructor who was carrying out a currency jump with a ‘C’ licence jumper. Once the canopy had deployed it was noticed that the top right hook was undone. This was reconnected and the pair landed safely. From pictures taken in the aircraft it appears that the hook was done up. Statements from the instructor, the ‘C’ licence jumper and other instructors all confirmed that the hooks were attached in the aircraft. The Tandem pair made an unstable exit, which may have caused the hook to become unattached." Anyone ever had this happen? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
You and me both. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I agree. My only recent gripe with Tonysuits is a pair of tandem pants I bought recently with booties. The bootie material is way softer and more supple than what my original RW suit or my Camera suit was made of. It is almost like the other two suits had a higher quality tighter grained leather. They have ripped already only two months in to the season. I am guessing they got a batch of material that isn't a good as what they usually get, but I asked and they said it was the same stuff that was on my 8 year old pitt special. Tell us how you fly? What are you going to be filming? I am primarily a jumper whose core experience is rw jumps, with some freefly thrown in. Most of my jumps when I had ordered my camera suit were done in a Tony suit Pit Special RW suit. I ordered a Tony camera suit with the biggest wing, and mega booties. If I was a freefly guy I probably would have went with a different setup, but probably still Tonysuits. I like my Tonysuit a lot, the build quality was great, I like the wing design it has minimal gap where it goes around the MLW. That is slick!

Fly your pattern in 1/3 brakes, if you are high in different legs of your pattern you can then use full flight to decrease glide. If you are low you can use additional brakes to increase glide. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

None of those options are relevant to the closing system on the KISS. The key is that these mounts reduce the snag hazard, they don't eliminate it. You can still hitch a line or a bridle using these mounts, but it is much more likely to release a line that drags across on opening that the stock mounts. How long before we start flying one of these
DougH replied to BETO74's topic in Photography and Video
Chuck, can please you expand on your experience with the solo shot. I thought it could be an awesome tool for filming landings, be it swooping , tandem landings, and for student/experienced jumper training. How did they test it? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
So maybe I didn't ask it in the form of a question in my comment above. How do you folk suggest dealing with the lack of cutaway for the helmet. I think the anti-snag mounts go a long way to making it much safer, but I still will only jump cameras on helmets with a cutaway system. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Can we please ban this 100 jump wonder from the instructor forum. He isn't soliciting advice like a student might, and he isn't adding value or knowledge like an instructor. Bad enough we have to put up with his nonsense in other topical forums. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
-
How do you plan on adding a cutaway? I love my kiss but that just strikes me as a bad idea. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

This is great info, a moderator should move it to its own thread, because we are never going to find it again with a search hiding under this thread title. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

What features? Seriously people expect too much from these things. My OG Viso has a back light, and gives me my altitude. I have no desire to look at the log book in the thing, or see my "max freefall speed" that lost interest at around 30 jumps. If you can get a good price on an older viso it will do everything flawlessly that you should reasonably expect from a digital altimeter. Edit: oh I get it, a bad joke. You got me... but it still wasn't funny. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
