  1. The problem is the length of the lens. You don't need a 200M zoom on your head. I would be jumping a prime lens. If you are filming tandems you will have plenty of time to land, drop your rig off, and run back out to get the landing up close. If you are fun jumping and filming other jumpers save the landing photos for when you aren't jumping, and use the zoom lens then. 2. I am suprised your DZ doesn't have any of these lying around. http://www.paragear.com/skydiving/10000129/TD201/TRAINING-ALTIMETER-ALTITUDE-AWARENESS-TRAINER Mostly useful for reading off the altitude and stating what you should be doing at that altitude during the dive flow. 3. I have always theorized that we have an evolutionary survival mechanism of being scared of heights that would have killed our ancestors. So while cliffs and trees are all things that would have been a risk to early humans, but being at 13,000 feet in a flying machine would not have been. I have no formal studies or education in this sort of thing to back up the claim, but I like the way it packages up the differences. 4. Yup. Let them go. Do detective work, and arrest them later. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  5. Well the solution certainly isn't to push through a fix like The Veterans' Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency Act of 2014 which had a ridiculous implementation deadline that basically left if dead on arrival. I can't comment on the hiring freeze, but money and effort that could have been spent on lasting fixes has been repeatedly wasted in the past. 6. The higher bulk makes it less appropriate for common PC spandex pouches. Does that make it inappropriate for the general skydiver? No probably not, but it isn't a great thing either. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  7. I think every jumper should have a few jumpsuits, but you don't need a handful out of the gates. Your mileage will vary depending on your DZ. My DZO used to be a belly guy, so the advice was to get a decent RW suit first. Now the DZO's are freeflyers, so all the new jumpers are getting custom freefly suits for their first suit... and then using them mostly to do belly RW. You can do decent RW with freefly suit that gives you a reasonable fall rate on your belly, so I can't say that I find a flaw with that. But I still think a good RW suit with booties are an essential part of any gear bag. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  8. I am sure there are some counterfeits, and potential quality issues, but they are selling in sealed blister packs from Indian manufacturers. Given the price point it doesn't really seem like a worthwhile product to counterfeit. I forget, but I think it cost me 1.50 USD for a whole weeks course. I didn't get sick on my two week trip, so I can't say for sure. But when I did research there wasn't much concern raised about it. 9. She had been travelling in India. If you think antibiotics are over prescribed and misused here, it pales in comparison to Asian. In India and other places in Asia antibiotics are over the counter. When I was in Nepal I bought Ciprofloxacin to have in my pack for in case I caught a bad case of travelers diarrhea, it was like buying a pack of smokes. 10. Buy a packing cube that fits the volume of the canopy when packed in dbag. Sew elastic keepers or some sort of snap on on the side of the packing cube that lifts open. It won't turn or rotate if it fits snug. Total cost is probably under 25 USD. You just have to search around to fine a cube that is more deep like a packed bag, there are tons of variations. https://www.amazon.com/Packing-Travel-Luggage-Organizer-Laundry/dp/B01N53LEBP/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1484742491&sr=8-18&keywords=packing+cube "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

  12. If you are jumping over seas you need travel insurance, and medical evac insurance. If you bust yourself up how are you going to foot the bill to get home if you are looking at a long hospital stay and rehab? It may be an expensive medical transport back, and not an earlier coach ticket on a new return flight. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  13. I wouldn't want to mount a DSLR on a Fuel, but maybe that is just me. 3/4 frame mirrorless on the other hand, but still I think the Fuel isn't idea if you are running decent glass that tends to be bigger and heavier. I am redoing my setup this winter, ditching the ancient Rebel XSi for a Sony A7ii, which is a mirror-less full frame sensor body. I am going to be sticking it onto a Flat-top pro. 14. Come on, now your just being ridiculous. I always put a harness on a student, snug up the leg straps, snug up the MLW, and leave everything else as is while they pose for pictures. Before I finish I make sure I put on my tandem rig, because it really makes it better for me to finish the harness adjustments. After each jump I leave the MLW and legs straps tight, but take time to leave the belly band in the improper placement that I started with. I do make sure to push the chest strap way down the main lift web. It doesn't make the walk back more comfortable, but gives me one more up close and personal with the students chest. Again all of this is better done with the tandem rig still on my back. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  15. Our left, or their left? I don't like how the harness is adjusted on the woman with the green v-neck at all. Belly band should be way further up the pelvis, I have them hold the harness at the hip junctions so it is up near their hip bones while I adjust the MLW. This almost always gets the belly band up higher where it is supposed to be. Those hip junctions should be maybe 3 inches higher. Also the belly band should be tighter. The MLW should run more up the front than along the sides. Is the student going to fall out, probably not, but they are going to be more comfortable, and perform better (especially for landing) if you adjust per the manual. I can't think of why you would want it this way, unless the chest strap was previously sitting low from being on a smaller student, and you were being lazy. 16. I ended up buying a used A7ii. It has the 5-axis in camera stabilization, and has a full frame sensor versus the cropped sensor in the a6000/a6500 etc. I am going to be using it first for travel photography, but I am going to get it ready to jump for this upcoming spring too. If I don't like it I am sure I can sell it for close to what I bought it for considering it was used.
  17. I am hoping this comes out soon. I want to buy this! Going to Nepal end of November and I want to be bringing new camera gear, but I don't think it is going to ship in time unfortunately. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  18. Don't jump that. That thing is a POS, and the price shouldn't be your consideration when you are concerned with safety first and quality video or stills product second. As mentioned it is a snag risk, and it will get too much of your arm in the shot. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  19. I am going to be at O'Hare for a work conference Nov. 9th through the 11th and I am trying to figure out if I should hurry back to CT, or if it might be worth getting a rental car and heading over to the DZ. How is the dropzone activity this time of year? I know the end of the season is approaching, and shit is getting chilly! How about weather, I know here in CT November is a crap shoot with winds? I looked at the calendar, no events planned. Option A: back to CT. Option B: Find an overpriced hotel in downtown and explore. Option C: bring my rig, get a rental car, and call the DZ to see if they have cabins/bunk available. Thanks! First beer is on me for any locals with some input! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  20. How long ago did strong switch to the clear coated cables. It must be at least 10 years ago, because I don't remember the uncoated ones being common when I first started in the sport, a we were a dual hawk dz. I wouldn't be thrilled about that dzo's level of expenditures on mx and upgrades. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  21. Bringing this back from the dead. Is there anyone out there that can mod a Vector 2 to make the reserve flap a tuck in type? I have a mint vector 2 that I want to use for a casual crw rig. I know there was a crw flap mod that upt put a bulletin out for, but a tuck in flap would be more secure from line snags in all directions. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  22. Yes that is my opinion of them. Too short of a recovery arc which leads to a lower turn, and a more narrow window for length of dive and rotation rate. I see way more people, especially jumpers newer to swooping, digging out of the corner on these short recovery arc ellipticals. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  23. Don't know about either, but unless it is a complete redesign I would think that the Crossfire 3 will continue to be a poor choice for learning high performance landings! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  24. Can you take pictures of the line attachment points, and the wear? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
  25. My apologies; and you are correct. Even each state in our 50 states may have specific law to negate what I posted. My post was in general of what basic tort law here in the US. Jerry Baumchen I try to avoid playing lawyer on the internet, and I am not a lawyer in real life. Knowing how to read tax code and tax court cases isn't close to tort law. I agree with what you said above Jerry. But I was approaching it from the non legal side. We operate to a certain extent on gentleman agreements that aren't written but I hold myself to, and I hope others return the favor. So yes if there isn't a written rental agreement it may be unenforceable, but if both parties are aware that the policy is that non-student jumpers are responsible to pay for damage and loss than the right thing to do is to replace the gear since jumping it is accepting those terms on a ethical level, even if it isn't a legal requirement. Same as jumping a friends gear, you break it, you lose it, you replace it. I don't whip out rental agreements to jump a friend rig, or let someone jump mine. Like I said above we are adults and if that is the DZ policy and it was made known we can do the adult thing and not jump the gear if we aren't willing to take on the risk of loss. I kind of think shirking that responsibility on a legal technicality is kind of similar to violating the unspoken pact that skydivers don't sue. Of course I am not the one dealing with the situation, so I don't know what was known by the parties, and how reasonable (or unreasonable) the DZ operators are being. If they stuck me with the bill for a brand new canopy I would tell them to pound sand at that point. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
